Selling a junk or inoperable car in Avondale

Avondale puts a date on stale tags. Its code defines an abandoned or inoperable vehicle to include one that "is incapable of operation for other reasons that may include an expired (more than one month) license plate or the absence of a license." So a car parked since the registration ran out last spring may already be in that group, even with a good battery. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. Sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

The rest of Avondale's definition

Section 14-50 reaches any vehicle "partially or wholly dismantled, discarded, wrecked," one "on blocks, stands or similar devices," one "inoperable due to mechanical disassembly," and one "with a deflated tire or tires." One flat tire on a car parked for months can be enough to draw attention.

Hidden from the street, or under a carport

Section 14-180 sets the storage rule. No one may store an abandoned or inoperable vehicle, "including any vehicle being repaired or restored, that is visible from any public street or sidewalk." The one carve-out is a carport, where the car may sit if it is covered with "a properly maintained vehicle cover made exclusively for covering vehicles." A cover on a dead car anywhere else does not satisfy the code.

The same section bars leaving an abandoned or inoperable car "upon any public street, alleyway, public or private parking lot or city property." That last part reaches shopping center and apartment lots, not just city land. At rental properties, Section 14-350 adds that a dead car visible from the right-of-way or from a common area is prohibited.

Want to sell it with a sign instead? Avondale allows one vehicle for sale at a home, titled to someone who lives there and parked on an improved surface.

Twenty-four hours on the street

Under Section 23-57, you cannot leave "a disabled, dismantled, or otherwise inoperable motor vehicle" on a public street past 24 straight hours. An officer may also give the owner written notice to remove the car within 24 hours. After that, the city may step in if the car remains. See notice to remove a car for how to respond.

Arizona's paperwork for an Avondale sale

Avondale owners usually hold an electronic title, since that is how Arizona stores them. You can sell through eTitle Transfer, or sign a paper title on its back and give it over at the handoff. ADOT names no notary among the seller's steps.

Lapsed tags will not block the sale; the registration ends at the transfer anyway. Unscrew the plate, which Arizona leaves with the seller. Inside 30 days, re-use it on another car, surrender it, or file a plate-destruction affidavit. You may claim a credit for unexpired registration fees, less a $12 processing fee. The Sold Notice is free; file it on AZMVDNow.gov or on form 46-8502 inside 10 days.

An old car with no title has one more Arizona exit. If its model year is 12 or more years back and it is worth $1,200 or less, a registered scrap metal dealer or licensed recycler may buy it untitled, paying by check once you sign that no lien is attached. Junk car with no title explains the other options.

Getting an offer

Get an offer at (877) 421-6008 or on the form by listing the car, its miles, whether it moves, and where the title is. Under a carport, in a parking lot, or at a garage in Avondale, the truck loads it there. Measured straight, Goodyear is roughly 4.6 miles away and Glendale roughly 17.2. Questions people ask

Does covering a dead car make it OK in an Avondale driveway?
No, if people can see it from the street or sidewalk. Under Section 14-180, an abandoned or inoperable vehicle may be covered only in a carport, using a car cover kept in good condition.
Police left a notice on my broken car on an Avondale street. How long do I have?
Section 23-57 lets an officer give written notice to remove a disabled or inoperable car from a public street within 24 hours. The same section bars leaving one there longer than 24 hours in a row.
Does the sale need a notary in Arizona?
ADOT's seller instructions do not include a notary. Sign the title's back, or go through eTitle Transfer, and the buyer gets it with the car.
