Selling a dead or junk GMC
Yes, a dead GMC can be sold without fixing it. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that covers a Sierra that quit on the job site, a Yukon with a gone transmission, or a Savana van that has sat behind a shop for years. Sell the whole car as it sits. There is free pickup anywhere in the US.

GMC has almost never sold an ordinary car. Its lineup on this site is pickups, full-size SUVs, crossovers and vans, so the vehicle you want gone is probably big, heavy and parked somewhere awkward.
Where GMC owners have filed the most complaints
For each of the 20 GMC models in the EPA list, we tallied owner complaints sent to NHTSA, the federal vehicle safety agency, through October 10, 2026. The total is 48,275. Each GMC complaint here was filed with the agency by an owner. None is a confirmed failure, and the counts are not a reliability ranking.
| Model | Years in EPA list | NHTSA complaints |
|---|---|---|
| Sierra 1500 | 1999-2026 | 11,692 |
| Yukon | 1992-2027 | 9,297 |
| Acadia | 2007-2027 | 5,569 |
| Envoy | 2002-2009 | 3,527 |
| Terrain | 2010-2027 | 3,153 |
| Jimmy | 1984-2004 | 2,730 |
| C/K Pickup | 1984-1998 | 2,259 |
| Sierra 2500HD | 1999-2026 | 1,847 |
| Suburban | 1984-1999 | 1,799 |
| Canyon | 2004-2026 | 1,436 |
Three things stand out in that table:
- Two models hold close to half the total. The Sierra 1500 and the Yukon together account for 20,989 of the 48,275. Both have been sold for decades, which is part of why.
- The Envoy is the outlier for its age. It was in the EPA list for only eight model years, 2002 to 2009, yet it sits fourth, ahead of the Terrain, which has been sold since 2010.
- The heavy-duty Sierras trail the half-ton by a wide margin. The 2500HD has 1,847 complaints and the 3500HD 512, against 11,692 for the 1500.
The newest GMCs barely register: the Hummer EV has 25 and the Sierra EV 13. The EPA list shows just two model years for each of those electric trucks. Owners have not had long to report problems, so a low number there tells you little. At the other end, the 1980s models show almost nothing, from 0 for the Caballero to 28 for the S-15. Read those as thin records, not as proof the trucks never had trouble.
What GMC is, according to Wikipedia
GMC began in 1911 and traded as the General Motors Truck Company until 1943. Wikipedia names William C. Durant as its founder. It is headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, and its parent is General Motors. Wikipedia lists its products as automobiles, commercial vehicles and trucks.
One line in that article matters for anyone selling a GMC for parts: GMC shares platforms with Chevrolet. A GMC is built on the same underpinnings as its Chevrolet counterpart, so a dead one is not an orphan.
Getting a dead GMC out of the driveway
Size is the usual problem with a GMC that no longer runs. A full-size pickup or a Yukon is too heavy to push onto the street, and a Savana cutaway like the one pictured above may be parked in a lot or behind a business. You don't need to move it. The truck comes to where it sits.
Before you call, have these ready:
- The model and model year, plus the mileage if the odometer still works.
- Its condition: does the engine turn over, do the wheels turn, has anyone taken parts off?
- The title situation. No title in hand? The rules differ from state to state; start with selling a junk car with no title.
- Where it is: a driveway, a field, a fleet yard or a repair shop.
If the truck failed in a specific way, our guides cover the common ones: a bad transmission, a blown engine, or a diesel with DPF or DEF trouble. For anything that big, selling a junk truck or SUV walks through what changes. After the sale, take care of the plates and paperwork.

All 20 GMC nameplates in the EPA list since 1984 have their own page. Years are model years as the EPA list shows them. A GMC whose range stops at 2026, like the Canyon or the Sierras, has not necessarily been dropped; the EPA simply has not added its next year yet.

Questions people ask
- Will you buy a GMC truck or van that doesn't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes pickups, SUVs and vans like the Sierra, Yukon and Savana. Sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
- Does the Sierra 1500's complaint count mean it is a bad truck?
- No. The 11,692 figure counts complaints owners filed with NHTSA, not confirmed problems. The Sierra 1500 has been in the EPA list every year from 1999 to 2026, and a model on sale that long collects more reports than one sold for a few years.
- Why do the Hummer EV and Sierra EV have so few complaints?
- They are new. The Hummer EV shows 2024-2025 in the EPA list and the Sierra EV 2025-2026, so their owners have had a couple of model years to file, not decades like Sierra and Yukon owners. Their counts, 25 and 13, are not a comparison with the older trucks.
- Is GMC part of Chevrolet?
- No. Both are General Motors brands. Wikipedia lists General Motors as GMC's parent and notes that GMC shares platforms with Chevrolet.
