Makes and models

Find your make

Pick your make. Each make page lists its models, and each model page shows what owners report failing, year by year.

Where the model facts come from

Two federal files do most of the work.

  • Owner complaints and recalls, from NHTSA. Drivers file complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Its defects office uses them, alongside other data, to spot safety problems worth a closer look. Recalls are a separate record. A manufacturer that finds a safety defect has five business days to report it to NHTSA.
  • The model list, from the EPA. It comes from the downloadable fuel economy data on FuelEconomy.gov. Those figures come from testing at the EPA's lab in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and by carmakers with EPA oversight.

One complaint is one driver's account of what went wrong. What we point out is a pattern: many complaints about the same part in the same model years. A model page names the part and the years, and links the record.
