Below: the rotary engine that set Mazda apart, the plants that built its US cars, the models owners file the most federal complaints about, and every Mazda nameplate in the EPA list.
The rotary years
Mazda is the carmaker that stuck with the rotary engine. Wikipedia says the company "refocused its efforts and made the rotary engine a choice for the sporting motorist rather than a mainstream powerplant." That meant the lightweight RX-7 from 1978, and later the RX-8.
The run ended in 2012. Mazda discontinued the RX-8 that year "due to declining sales and stricter emissions standards," and Wikipedia calls it the last production model with a rotary engine. In the EPA list, the RX-7 runs through the 1995 model year and the RX-8 covers 2004 to 2011.
Mazda tried other unusual engines, too. The Millenia sedan carried a Miller-cycle V6 until it was dropped in 2002.
Where US Mazdas came from
Two American plants matter for an owner today.
- Flat Rock, Michigan. Mazda built its own plant there. Wikipedia says it built the Probe alongside the mainstream 626 sedan and a companion MX-6 sports coupe.
- Huntsville, Alabama. Toyota and Mazda announced the joint plant in January 2018 and started construction that November. It opened in September 2021 building the Toyota Corolla Cross, and Mazda CX-50 production started there in January 2022.
Wikipedia also lists a plant in Salamanca, Mexico, built with Sumitomo Corporation, and AutoAlliance Thailand, a joint plant with Ford.
Which Mazdas draw the most complaints
The number by each Mazda is the owner complaint count NHTSA, the federal safety agency, showed when we looked on October 10, 2026. All 28 Mazda models add up to 22,682. Eight models have more than 1,000 each:
| Model | Years in the EPA list | NHTSA complaints |
|---|---|---|
| 626 | 1984-2002 | 3,209 |
| Mazda3 | 2004-2026 | 3,108 |
| CX-5 | 2013-2026 | 2,452 |
| Mazda6 | 2003-2021 | 2,263 |
| Tribute | 2001-2011 | 2,115 |
| CX-9 | 2007-2023 | 1,490 |
| CX-7 | 2007-2012 | 1,132 |
| Protege | 1992-2003 | 1,038 |
The top five together hold more than half of all Mazda complaints. Read the table with the years beside it:
- Long runs pile up counts. The 626 had 19 EPA model years and the Mazda3 has 23. A model sold for decades, in big numbers, collects more complaints without saying anything about the car itself.
- The Tribute stands out for a short run. It had 11 model years and still drew 2,115, more than the CX-9 managed in 17.
- The newest models have had little time. The CX-90 already shows 505 complaints for 2024-2026, more than the MX-5 Miata's 494 across 1990-2026. The CX-70 has 54 and the CX-50 has 156. Those three have only been on sale a few years, so their counts are young and still rising.
- Some old nameplates barely register. The GLC shows 2 and the MX-30 shows 1. Few complaints can mean few cars sold, not a better car.
Selling a Mazda that won't run
Leave your Mazda as it is; you don't have to strip anything. Wheels, battery, converter: all of it stays on. The whole car goes, as it sits.
- Note which Mazda it is, its model year and roughly how far it has been driven.
- Be straight about its condition. For your Mazda, say if it rolls when pushed and which panels or parts are gone.
- Mention who holds the title. If it is lost, read selling a junk car with no title first.
- Point us to the spot it sits in, whether that is a carport, a back lot or the curb where it died.
If it simply quit and you are not sure why, our non-running car guide covers what to weigh before you sell. Once it is gone, handle the plates and the paperwork.

Questions people ask
- Will you buy a Mazda that won't start?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, rotary RX-7s and RX-8s included. Sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
- Does the 626 having the most complaints make it the worst Mazda?
- No. The 3,209 figure is complaints owners filed with NHTSA across 19 EPA model years, 1984 to 2002. A model sold for that long, in big numbers, has had more time and more owners to file. It is not a reliability rating.
- Which Mazdas had a rotary engine?
- Wikipedia names the RX-7, starting in 1978, and the later RX-8. Mazda discontinued the RX-8 in 2012 and Wikipedia calls it the company's last production model equipped with a rotary engine, citing declining sales and stricter emissions standards.
- Are any Mazdas built in the US?
- Yes. Mazda Toyota Manufacturing USA in Huntsville, Alabama, a joint plant with Toyota, began building the CX-50 in January 2022. Years earlier, the 626 and MX-6 were built at a Mazda plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.
