Owner complaints and recalls, by generation
Wikipedia lists the LeSabre as Buick's full-size car from 1959 to 2005. EPA data on this site covers 1984 to 2005, which spans the end of the fifth generation and all of the sixth, seventh and eighth. Every LeSabre count here was checked against NHTSA on October 10, 2026. The vehicle count on each recall covers the full campaign, which often takes in other GM cars.
1984-1985: the last rear-drive years
The fifth generation (1977-1985) was the final rear-drive LeSabre, built at Buick City in Flint. These two years have only 10 complaints between them. On a LeSabre, check recall 89V102000 above all. A little nylon bushing in the cruise control servo bail could come loose and raise engine speed without warning. It covers 1984-1988 LeSabres, and its 1,755,897-vehicle count may include other models.
1986-1991: front-wheel drive arrives
The sixth generation moved to GM's front-drive H-body, with a 3.0 V6 or 3.8 V6 and a 4-speed 4T60 automatic. It drew 180 complaints in six years. On the 1987 and 1988, steering leads the list (13 of 40 and 12 of 21).
The 1987 had four recall campaigns. Recall 87V135000 dealt with an in-line fusible link that might melt and cause a fire. Dealers fixed it with a new windshield washer bottle bracket. Recall 87V093000 covers an ABS pressure switch that might leak brake fluid and cause the hydraulic pump motor to fail.
1992-1999: brakes first, then the engine bay
This is the busiest generation, with 1,820 complaints. Hydraulic brakes top the 1992 (57 of 189) and 1993 (65 of 194). Those LeSabre years have two recalls. 91V167000 is for a 1992 parking brake lever that might slip teeth. 96V015000 is for transmission cooler lines on 1992-1993 cars that might come apart in cold weather under heavy load.
By 1997 and 1998 the engine dominates. Engine and engine cooling is named in 103 of 394 complaints on the 1997 and 183 of 400 on the 1998. Those two years also have the most fire reports of any LeSabre year, 31 and 43. Recall 04V090000 says certain Delphi fuel pressure regulators on the 3800 V6 (L36) leaked at a much higher rate than usual, letting fuel into the intake manifold, on 1998-2000 cars. Separately, 96V116000 warned that a backfire on starting could break the upper intake manifold on 1996-1997 LeSabres.
2000-2005: visibility and the body
The eighth generation has 1,710 complaints, and the first year carries 669 of them. Visibility leads in 2000 (228), 2001 (86) and 2002 (108). Structure moves up next: 36 complaints on the 2001, 39 on the 2002 and 47 on the 2003. On the 2004, the electrical system leads with 62 of 162.
The 2000 had five recall campaigns, among them 99V355000 for a headlamp adjuster and 00V114000 for internal fluid leaks in the ABS hydraulic unit. Recall 02V222000 covers a driver air bag inflator that could crack at a weld during deployment on 2002-2003 cars; its 133,221-vehicle count includes minivans and SUVs. NHTSA also holds 3 complaints filed under a 2006 model year, after EPA's data ends. The Lucerne replaced the LeSabre.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Figures are NHTSA's, pulled October 10, 2026. Late LeSabres were driven fewer years before owners could report on them, but even the last one built is two decades old. A LeSabre recall covering several years is listed in each of them, so the right-hand column adds up past 23.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1984-1986 | 26 | 1 | 2 | 2, 1, 2 |

Is a LeSabre worth fixing?
Start with the paperwork, then the quote.
- Run the VIN. Use NHTSA's recall lookup and ask a Buick dealer about anything still open, especially the 1998-2000 fuel regulator recall.
- Price the actual repair in writing, then look up what a running LeSabre of that year brings. On a car this old, the repair often costs more. Our page on repairs that cost more than the car walks through it.
- Running hot or losing coolant? On the 1997-1998 cars, engine cooling is where complaints pile up. See head gasket or overheating before you spend on parts.
Selling your LeSabre whole
- Gather the VIN, mileage and the problem in a sentence or two.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it is parked: driveway, back lot, garage or curb, and whether it rolls freely. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Don't remove anything, from the converter to the battery.
- Have the LeSabre's title and a photo ID out when the driver comes. Lost title? Read selling with no title. Plate and insurance steps are on after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which LeSabre model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- On October 10, 2026, the 2000 LeSabre was on top with 669 complaints. Behind it sit the 1998 (400), 1997 (394) and 2001 (328). Each one is an owner's own account, not a finding about every car.
- Does the fuel pressure regulator recall cover my LeSabre?
- Recall 04V090000 lists 1998-2000 LeSabres with the 3800 V6 (L36) and certain Delphi fuel pressure regulators, which could leak fuel into the intake manifold. The fix was a new regulator. Type your LeSabre's VIN into NHTSA's recall site to see if it got one.
- Will you buy a LeSabre that has been parked for years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention flat tires or locked brakes so the right equipment shows up.
- Do I need to take the battery or wheels off my LeSabre first?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits. List anything already removed in your request, since it affects the number.
