Selling a junk or non-running Buick Rainier

Four of the Buick Rainier's 10 recall campaigns are about the same thing: power window and door controls on 2006-2007 models. NHTSA's notices say fluid may get into the driver's door module. Wikipedia says GM's 2012 recall of these SUVs was to fix short circuits in window and door lock switches that could cause fires.

A Rainier that won't run or isn't worth the repair can go as it is. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Buick's TrailBlazer cousin

Per Wikipedia, the Rainier was built from July 2003 to June 2007 at GM's Moraine Assembly plant in Moraine, Ohio, on the GMT360 platform it shared with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer. It replaced the Oldsmobile Bravada. Engines were the 4.2-liter Vortec 4200 inline six and the 5.3-liter Vortec 5300 V8, both with a 4-speed 4L60-E automatic. EPA lists 2WD and AWD versions. The Enclave replaced it for 2008.

Problems, two years at a time

2004-2005: electrical and lighting

The first model year carries the most complaints: 158, with 73 naming the electrical system, then exterior lighting (14) and power train (13). The 2005 has 103, led by electrical (31) and the gasoline fuel system (16).

Lighting recalls match that pattern. 04V527 (2004) covers tail and stop lamp bulbs that heat and vibration can loosen until they flicker and quit. 05V198 (2004) replaces turn signal flasher modules that could make the lights flash wrong. Both are big shared campaigns, 871,473 and 286,478 vehicles, covering GM trucks and SUVs. Recall 05V035 (2005) replaced windshields whose urethane bead may not have stuck to the body in spots.

Wikipedia adds that the IIHS gave the 2004 an overall Marginal front-impact score; 2005 and newer got Acceptable.

2006-2007: fuel complaints and the door module recalls

The 2006 has 91 complaints and the 2007 has 38. The 2007 has had the fewest years to draw complaints, and Buick dropped the Rainier after it. On both years, the gasoline fuel system is named most: 24 times on the 2006 and 8 on the 2007. No Rainier recall covers the fuel system.

This is where most of the recalls sit, seven on the 2006 and five on the 2007:

  • 12V406, 13V248, 14V404 and 15V599 (2006-2007): power window and door controls. Dealers test the driver's door module and coat it, or install a new module or switch. These campaigns, from 9,932 to 278,174 vehicles, also cover the TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7x.
  • 15V519 (2006-2007): dealers replace the headlamp driver module. Its 429,170 count includes the LaCrosse, Grand Prix and GM's other SUVs.
  • 05V455 (2006): a power steering hose that may not meet spec and could fail under hard steering while braking.
  • 05V552 (2006): corrected tire and loading labels.

Complaints and recalls by year

We counted these Rainier figures in NHTSA's owner complaints on October 10, 2026. Only one of them is filed under a 2003. One recall can count in two years.

Overall, electrical leads with 124 complaints, ahead of the gasoline fuel system (56) and exterior lighting (38).

Repair it, or sell it?

  1. Door switch acting up on a 2006-2007? Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before paying for a module. Four campaigns cover that part.
  2. Lights, gauges or a no-start? Electrical leads every year from 2004 to 2005. Our electrical problems guide helps you decide how far to chase it.
  3. Won't run at all? See car doesn't run for what to check first.
  4. Repair quote near the running value? Then repairs cost more than it is worth lays out selling it unrepaired.

Selling the Rainier whole

  1. Have the VIN, the mileage, six or V8, and 2WD or AWD.
  2. Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Explain where the SUV sits and if it will roll in neutral. A heavy SUV stuck in park or on flat tires needs the right truck. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave the wheels and parts on, and mention anything missing.
  5. Have the title and keys ready. Plates and insurance once it's gone: after you sell.
