So the power train comes up often in the complaint file. If the repair doesn't make sense for you, sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you get free pickup anywhere in the US.

Every US CT6 is a first-generation car

Wikipedia dates the first generation from January 2016 to May 2023, built in the US at Detroit-Hamtramck. GM ended US assembly in February 2020 and retooled the plant for electric vehicles, starting with the GMC Hummer EV. The second generation, from May 2023, is built in Shanghai. It was the first rear-drive full-size Cadillac sedan since the Fleetwood ended in 1996.

Engines on the first generation: a 2.0-liter turbo four, a 3.6-liter V6 and a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6. Transmissions were 8-speed and 10-speed Hydra-Matic automatics, plus an electronic CVT on the plug-in hybrid, which carries an 18.4 kWh battery.

2016-2018: seat belts, child seat anchors and lights

The 2016 has 11 complaints. It also holds every crash with an injury on file for the car: 3 crashes, 2 injuries and 1 death reported. Three recalls list it:

  • 16V687: the bolt holding the front passenger seat belt webbing to its anchor could be loose or missing, on cars built July 21-22, 2016. 131 vehicles.
  • 18V437: extra structural adhesive on the inboard child seat anchor bars could get in the way of fitting a child seat. 22,043 vehicles, 2016-2018 CT6.
  • 21V759: park and position lights that may be too bright on 2016-2017 cars. 181 vehicles.

The 2017 is the peak year, with 26 complaints and 13 on the power train. The 2018 has 12. Recall 18V673 covers rear seat belt retractors that may not retract on 2018-2019 cars. Its 15,800 vehicles also include the Escalade ESV, Suburban, Volt and Yukon XL.

2019-2020: the 10-speed years

The 2019 has 17 complaints, and 14 name the power train. Recall 25V148 says the 10-speed can be damaged inside the transmission. Dealers add monitoring software to the transmission control module. That campaign's 90,081 vehicles span the CT6, CT4, CT5 and Camaro.

Two more 2019 recalls: 19V889, brake control module software that affects stability control. Its 463,995 vehicles are mostly Silverado and Sierra pickups. And 19V117, turn signals that don't cancel, covering just 5 cars. The 2020 has 11 complaints and recall 19V731, for tire pressure sensors on dealer-installed 20-inch wheels (81 vehicles).

Complaints and recalls by model year

Counts as of October 10, 2026. The 2019 and 2020 cars are the youngest, so they've had the fewest years to gather reports. A campaign can list several years.

Should you fix it?

  1. Run the VIN at NHTSA first. On a 2019-2020, ask a dealer whether 25V148 was done.
  2. Get a written quote for the transmission or engine work. The bad transmission guide covers symptoms and how to weigh it.
  3. On a plug-in, a charging or battery fault is its own question. See hybrid battery failed.
  4. If an open recall is what's holding you back, open recall explains selling with one.

How to sell the CT6 whole

Note which CT6 you have (four-cylinder, V6, twin-turbo or plug-in) along with the VIN and odometer reading. Request an offer online or call (877) 421-6008. Let us know the parking spot and if it rolls in Neutral. Keep the wheels, battery and converter on it. The title and keys change hands at pickup. For plates and insurance afterward, see after you sell.
