Selling a broken Cadillac Escalade
Most recent Escalade complaints are about the engine. Of 697 owner complaints NHTSA logged on 2021-2026 Escalades through October 10, 2026, 444 name the engine. These trucks are young, and their totals could still rise as owners keep filing.

Five generations, two problem eras
Wikipedia counts five Escalade generations. Every generation since the 2007 model year has offered a 6.2-liter V8. Complaint totals by generation, from the 2,392 owners have filed:
| Generation | Model years | Engine and transmission | Complaints |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | 1999-2000 | 5.7 L31 V8; 4-speed 4L60-E | 110 |
| Second | 2002-2006 | 5.3 LM7 or 6.0 LQ9 V8; 4L60-E (rear drive) or 4L65-E (all-wheel drive) | 437 |
| Third | 2007-2014 | 6.2 L92 V8, or L9H for E85; 6-speed 6L80; Hybrid with a 2ML70 CVT | 715 |
| Fourth | 2015-2020 | 6.2 L86 V8; 6L80 (2015), 8L90 (2015-2017), 10L80 (2018-2020) | 430 |
| Fifth | 2021-present | 6.2 L87 V8, supercharged 6.2 LT4 on the Escalade-V, or a diesel; 10-speed 10L80 | 697 |
The 2001 model year has 3 complaints and sits outside the rows above. Every recall below is a whole-campaign count, and nearly all of them also covered Chevrolet and GMC trucks, so the vehicle numbers are not Escalades alone.
1999-2006: brakes, wiring and belts
The early trucks were built in Arlington, Texas, and the second generation's ESV and EXT came from Silao, Mexico. Brakes lead the 1999, 2000 and 2002, where the 139 complaints include 25 on hydraulic brakes and 15 on service brakes. Electrical complaints lead the 2003, 2004 and 2005.
Recalls in this stretch are mostly about the body and belts. 02V253 covered pinch points on folding second-row head restraints in 2002 trucks. 04V129 replaced tailgate support cables on 2002-2004 pickups and SUVs that could corrode and snap. 05V163 changed the routing of the second-row center seat belt on 2003-2005 trucks.
2007-2014: the air bag years
The 2007 has more complaints than any other Escalade year, 286, and 135 name the air bags. Air bags lead every year from 2006 to 2011, adding up to 327 complaints from 2007 to 2011 alone.
Four recalls filed on February 5, 2021, replace the front passenger air bag inflator: 21V050 (2007-2011), 21V052 (2007-2009), 21V053 (2009-2013) and 21V054 (2010-2014). The largest, 21V050, covers 2,641,272 vehicles. Two wiring campaigns, 08V441 and 10V240, added an in-line fuse on 2007-2008 trucks and took out the heated washer system on 2007-2009 ones.
2015-2020: the engine starts to lead
Engine complaints top each year from 2015 through 2020, 152 in all. The recalls point elsewhere, though. 19V645 reprogrammed the brake control module on 2015-2017 trucks whose vacuum pump might not make enough vacuum for the brakes. 18V586 updated power steering software on the 2015 after assist could drop out for a moment. 16V256 told owners of some 2016 trucks not to drive until dealers replaced the front upper control arms.
2021-2026: the 6.2 V8 recall
The 2021 has 12 recall campaigns, the most of any Escalade year, and the 2023 has 231 complaints, 156 of them on the engine. Recall 25V274 covers 2021-2024 Escalades with the 6.2-liter V8. Under it, a dealer inspects each engine and fixes or swaps it where needed; engines that pass are refilled with thicker oil. Its 597,571 vehicles include Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Sierra and Yukon models.
Other recent campaigns: 24V797 installed new transmission software on 2021 trucks and came with a special coverage program. 22V617 inspected third-row seat belt buckle rivets on 2021-2022 trucks. 26V289 grounded some 2026 4WD and AWD trucks until dealers check the transfer case; only 66 vehicles are in that campaign.
Fix it, or sell it as is?
- 2021-2024 with engine trouble? Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. If 25V274 is open, ask a Cadillac dealer what the recall covers on your truck before you sell.
- Air bag light on a 2007-2014? Ask whether the passenger inflator recall for your year was done.
- Still making payments or leasing? See still owe on the loan or leased car first.
- Engine done on an older truck? Compare the quote with what a running Escalade of the same year brings. The blown engine guide helps you weigh it.
Complaints and recalls by model year
These come from NHTSA's complaint database as it stood on October 10, 2026. The newest Escalades haven't been out long, so their numbers may still climb. A recall cell counts the campaigns naming that year; big GM truck campaigns often name a dozen years at once.

Selling an Escalade whole
- Know which one you have: standard, ESV or EXT, and two-wheel, four-wheel or all-wheel drive. The EPA lists all of them, plus a Hybrid.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe where it's parked. A full-size, body-on-frame SUV needs room, so mention a narrow garage, a steep driveway or another car in the way. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it whole. Keep the wheels and the converters on it. Tell us about anything already removed.
- Pickup needs the title and your ID. If a lender holds the title, clear that first. After you sell covers plates and insurance.

Questions people ask
- Which Escalade model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2007 leads with 286 in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 file, 135 of them about air bags. The 2023 (231), 2008 (167) and 2021 (164) follow. Recent trucks are still adding complaints, so their place on that list may change.
- Is my 2021-2024 Escalade's 6.2 V8 under a recall?
- It may be. Recall 25V274 covers 2021-2024 Escalades and Escalade ESVs with the 6.2-liter V8 gas engine. A dealer checks the engine, then repairs or replaces it if it doesn't pass; one that passes gets heavier oil. The 597,571 vehicles in that campaign include Silverados, Tahoes, Suburbans, Sierras and Yukons. Put your VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls first.
- Can I sell an Escalade I still owe money on?
- Usually. With an Escalade loan, the balance is paid off before the lender lets go of the title. Our still-owe-on-the-loan guide explains the steps.
- Will you take an Escalade that won't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, SUVs included, and there is free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us whether it's a standard, ESV or EXT, and whether it rolls.
