Selling a non-running car in Watsonville
We could not find Watsonville's municipal code, so this section covers California law. The state law hands the specifics to City Hall. Watsonville may adopt an ordinance under Vehicle Code 22660 declaring abandoned, wrecked or inoperative cars a nuisance, on public or private ground. The city can then take them away and bill its costs. Before counting on any grace period here, call the city and ask what its ordinance says. If you don't want to wait and see, we buy whole non-running and junk cars and offer free pickup anywhere in the US.

Parts missing? It can go right away
Vehicle Code 22669 is the state rule most likely to catch a Watsonville project car. That law lets a peace officer or designated public employee take away a Watsonville car believed abandoned, whether on a road or private land. Where the car is parked along the public right-of-way and lacks its engine, its transmission, wheels or tires, doors, a windshield, or another part it needs, removal can happen at once.
So a car on jack stands at the curb with the wheels off is in a different spot than a whole car that just will not start. Our missing parts guide covers selling one that is partly stripped.
Low-value cars: the 72-hour tag
Vehicle Code 22851.3 lays out the process when Watsonville puts an abandoned car's value at $500 or under:
- Watsonville posts a warning on the car 72 hours ahead of any tow. Cars valued at $300 or below and removed under 22669(d) skip it.
- After towing, Watsonville must notify the owner in 48 hours.
- Fifteen days after that notice, disposal may follow.
- An owner who wants a hearing has 10 days to ask.
Those dollar figures decide which legal steps apply. They are not a sale price.
Leaving it somewhere is its own offense
Vehicle Code 22523 makes it illegal to dump a car on a Watsonville road, or on another person's property without permission. A Watsonville fine starts at $100, and the court also wants proof you paid for the removal. When an impounded car goes unclaimed, whatever the lien sale fails to cover lands on the last registered owner. Sellers who filed a report of sale are off the hook for both.
Paperwork for a Watsonville sale
Title paperwork for a Watsonville car goes to the state DMV. Sign as seller where the title asks, get a lienholder's signature too if one is listed, and expect no notary step in DMV's private-sale instructions. If the title is lost, start with REG 227.
Five days is the limit for REG 138 after you sell, and DMV takes it online or by mail. That form is what clears later tickets, and the abandonment exposure described above, from your record. Scrap-bound cars skip the Smog Check, and normal plates usually stay on the car.

Questions people ask
- Does Watsonville have its own junk-car ordinance?
- Our online search came up empty. Watsonville could have its own abatement rules, since Vehicle Code 22660 lets cities write them. Ask the city to be sure.
- My car in Watsonville has no engine. Can it be towed without warning?
- If it sits along the public right-of-way, it can. In Watsonville, Vehicle Code 22669 allows a car to be removed right away when parts it needs, like the engine, transmission, wheels or doors, are missing.
- Could a buyer's dumping come back on me after a Watsonville sale?
- No, if a report of sale has been filed. Vehicle Code 22523 then frees the last registered Watsonville owner from the infraction and from any balance a lien sale leaves unpaid.
