Selling a dead Chevy Aveo
An Aveo with a snapped timing belt, an air bag light that never goes out, or a brake pedal that travels too far can come to us unrepaired. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits.

The Aveo's NHTSA file is short: 1,322 complaints, all but one on the eight model years from 2004 to 2011, and four recalls. Two patterns stand out: engine trouble on the first two years and air bag warnings on the middle three.
What fails on an Aveo
Timing belts on the 2004-2005
The engine system tops the complaints on both of the first two years, 56 of 206 on the 2004 and 57 of 235 on the 2005. In a pull from NHTSA's complaints API, 52 of the 83 engine complaints on the 2004 mention the timing belt, and 22 of 79 on the 2005 do. Owners write of belts that let go well before they expected; one 2005 owner put it at 46,000 miles. NHTSA lists no recall for the belt, and we found no GM coverage program.
The air bag light, 2006-2008
Air bags lead the complaints on the 2006 (54 of 189), 2007 (77 of 216) and 2008 (65 of 163). Many are about the warning lamp rather than a bag that failed: in the API pull, 44 of 82 air bag complaints on the 2007 and 32 of 70 on the 2008 mention the light. One 2008 owner says it stays on with no codes present.
One related warning matters if the car was ever crashed and repaired. GM's bulletin 12-09-41-001, from October 2012, helped dealers spot counterfeit air bag modules and listed the 2006-2010 Aveo among the cars where they might show up. It is an information notice for dealers, not a recall or a warranty.
The daytime running light module, 2004-2008
This is the biggest recall the Aveo has. Recall 14V261, filed in May 2014, says the DRL module in the center console can overheat and melt, and a melted module could start a fire. It covers 2004-2008 Aveos with daytime running lights, 218,000 vehicles. The fix is a revised module, a check of the wiring connector and cleaned circuit grounds. The recall repairs began on February 6, 2015.
A long brake pedal, 2009-2010
GM traced a long brake pedal on 2009-2010 Aveos with anti-lock brakes to the factory brake fluid. Its bulletin 12189 says the fluid doesn't stop corrosion on the zinc-plated valve parts in the ABS module, and the corrosion forms a gel that can slow the valves. A customer satisfaction program, open until November 30, 2014, inspected the module, replaced it where needed and changed the fluid. Recall 14V460 followed, 1,968 vehicles split between 2009-2010 Aveos and 2009 Pontiac G3s: cars that never got a new module under that program get one free.
Two smaller recalls
- 04V407: a rear seat belt on 2004 cars can twist and lock its retractor, leaving the belt unusable. Dealers added a webbing guide. 32,301 cars.
- 06V398: in a federal frontal crash test, a fuel line on a 2007 Aveo fractured while the pump kept running. Dealers replaced the fuse block and part of the fuel line on 17,676 cars.
Two body styles, one engine
The Aveo was a Daewoo design, the Kalos, built by GM Korea in Bupyeong. It reached the U.S. as a 2004 model, replacing the Daewoo Lanos, as a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback. For 2007 the sedan was restyled and the hatchback became the Aveo5. Pontiac sold the five-door as the G3 from spring 2009. For each year it has rows on, fueleconomy.gov lists the same 1.6-liter four with a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual. The 2011 was the last Aveo; the Sonic replaced it for 2012.
Complaints and recalls by model year
These Aveo totals were drawn from NHTSA's complaint and recall databases on October 10, 2026.
| Model year | Complaints | Fires reported | Injuries reported | Recalls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2004 | 206 | 9 | 20 | 2 |
| 2005 | 235 | 17 | 16 | 1 |
| 2006 | 189 | 16 | 7 | 1 |
| 2007 | 216 | 13 | 25 | 2 |
| 2008 | 163 | 16 | 19 | 1 |
| 2009 | 169 | 3 | 13 | 1 |
| 2010 | 66 | 0 | 8 | 1 |
| 2011 | 77 | 1 | 4 | 0 |
| 2012 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
One complaint is filed under a 2012 Aveo, a year Chevrolet sold the Sonic in its place; it is kept so the column matches NHTSA's total of 1,322. The 2004-2006 cars account for 630 complaints and the 2007-2011 cars for 691. Fires and injuries are as owners reported them. The DRL recall spans 2004-2008, so it appears in five rows.
Is it worth a repair?
Start with the repair estimate and what a running Aveo of that year and mileage sells for. If the estimate comes close, selling it unrepaired is the simpler call.
- Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Look for open DRL (14V261) or ABS (14V460) work. NHTSA's notice for the ABS recall says the module swap is free of charge.
- Belt broke? Get a written diagnosis of what the break did to the engine, then read our blown engine guide before agreeing to a rebuild.
- Light on, nothing else wrong? An air bag lamp by itself calls for a diagnostic scan before you write the car off.
- What would it bring as is? What a junk car is worth explains what moves the number.
How to sell the Aveo
- Note the Aveo's VIN and mileage, and jot down the symptoms.
- Request an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where the Aveo is waiting, whether that's an apartment lot, a driveway or a garage bay, and if it can roll.
- Keep the Aveo in one piece, its battery, wheels and catalytic converter in place, and flag anything that has been taken off.
- The driver needs the Aveo's title and a look at your photo ID. For plates, check after you sell, since states handle them differently.
Lost the title? Our no-title guide walks through it. Other small Chevrolets: the Sonic, the Spark and the Optra, or see every Chevrolet.
Questions people ask
- Which Aveo model years have the most complaints?
- The 2005, with 235 as of October 10, 2026. The 2007 has 216, the 2004 has 206, the 2006 has 189 and the 2009 has 169. Engine complaints lead on the 2004-2005 cars and air bag complaints on the 2006-2008.
- Was there ever a recall for the Aveo timing belt?
- No. NHTSA lists four Aveo recalls and none of them is for the belt, and we found no GM coverage program for it. The evidence is owner complaints: in an API pull, 52 of 83 engine complaints on the 2004 and 22 of 79 on the 2005 mention the timing belt.
- Why does my Aveo's air bag light stay on?
- We can't diagnose it from here, but you are not alone. In an API pull, 44 of 82 air bag complaints on the 2007 and 32 of 70 on the 2008 mention the warning light. If the car was crashed and had its air bags replaced, note that GM's bulletin 12-09-41-001 flagged fake air bag modules as a possibility on 2006-2010 Aveos. Have the system scanned before you pay for parts.
- What does the Aveo daytime running light recall fix?
- Recall 14V261 covers 2004-2008 Aveos with daytime running lights. The DRL module in the center console can overheat and melt, which could cause a fire. Dealers fit a revised module, check the wiring connector for heat damage and clean the circuit grounds. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Will you buy an Aveo whose timing belt broke?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Just say the belt broke, whether the car rolls with the shifter in Neutral, and where we'll find it.
