Selling an old Chevy Cavalier for parts

Even the newest Cavalier is past 20 years old now, and plenty are worth more as a whole car than as a repair job. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. You sell it as it sits, with nothing removed.

Wiring and heat run through NHTSA's file on this car. The electrical system shows up in 979 of its 4,658 complaints, and the two largest recalls on the 1995-2001 cars dealt with ignition switches that could start a fire in the steering column.

Three generations, mostly from Lordstown

Chevrolet sold the Cavalier from 1982 through 2005 on GM's J platform. NHTSA's complaint records for it begin with the 1984 model, so this page does too. Every Cavalier figure on this page comes from NHTSA's downloadable complaint and recall databases as of October 10, 2026.

Model yearsWhat changedEnginesComplaintsRecall campaigns
1984-1987First generation: hatchback, wagon and, from late 1983, a convertible; Z24 package for 19862.0 four; 2.8 V6 from 1985548
1988-1994Second generation: hatchback gone; a plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, from 19902.2 four and 3.1 V6 from 19906578
1995-2005Third generation: new body, wagon gone, four-cylinders only2.2 pushrod, 2.3 and 2.4 twin-cam, 2.2 Ecotec from 20023,94719

The third generation, built from August 1994 to October 2005, accounts for about 85% of all Cavalier complaints. Lordstown built cars in all three generations; Janesville, Wisconsin, and Lansing, Michigan, helped for part of the run.

The ignition switch fires, 1995-2001

GM filed two recalls for one fault. When the engine doesn't start and the driver keeps holding the key in Start, the ignition switch can overheat. NHTSA's summary warns that a fire could then start in the steering column, even after the engine is off and the key is out.

  • 02V070 (March 2002) covers 1995-1997 Cavaliers. Dealers add a relay kit so the heavy current stops passing through the switch. Its count of 1,589,948 is for the whole campaign, which also covers the Pontiac Sunfire and Grand Am, Buick Skylark and Oldsmobile Achieva.
  • 04V036 (January 2004) carries it to 1998-2001 Cavaliers and Sunfires and some 1998 Grand Am, Skylark and Achieva models, 1,415,231 vehicles. Dealers fit the relay kit, test starting with a charged battery, and replace the switch where needed.

On a car this old, what matters is whether the kit ever went in. A VIN lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or a call to a Chevrolet service desk, can tell you whether the relay kit is on record.

1996-1998: steering, air bags and a rear bolt

The 1996 and 1997 draw 503 and 540 complaints, and complaints on the 1997 report 25 fires, the most of any Cavalier year. NHTSA ties seven recall campaigns each to the 1996 and 1997 and four to the 1998. Beyond the switch work above, three stand out:

  • 02V286. On 1996-1998 Cavaliers built from January 1, 1996 to October 31, 1997, the tabs holding the steering rack's lower pinion bearing weren't crimped right. Dealers replace the bearing, or the whole gear assembly if inspection calls for it. The campaign's 1,159,156 vehicles also include the Sunfire, Grand Prix and four GM minivans.
  • 98V146. The air bag sensing module's calibration on 1996-1997 cars could fire the bags in a low-speed crash. Dealers recalibrated it. The 675,302 figure covers Cavaliers and Sunfires together.
  • 98V319. One rear suspension trailing arm bolt can fatigue and snap on 1996-1997 cars; a break while driving can cost the driver control. Again Cavaliers and Sunfires, 27,083 in all.

2003: the fuel pump year

No Cavalier year has more complaints than the 2003's 678, and 322 of them name the fuel system. A separate pull from NHTSA's complaints API found 348 of 388 fuel-related 2003 complaints mentioning the fuel pump, with owners describing stalls and no-starts. No recall covers it, and we found no GM coverage program.

The same year has recall 04V524: rear bulb sockets can lose contact, so the stop, turn and tail lamps quit. Dealers grease or replace the sockets. Its 256,025 vehicles include the 2003 Sunfire.

2004-2005: gauges that quit

The electrical system takes over the last two years: 166 of 330 complaints on the 2004 and 199 of 287 on the 2005. In the API pull, 92 of 185 electrical complaints on the 2004 and 124 of 210 on the 2005 mention a gauge. Neither year has a recall for it.

The early cars, 1984-1994

Older Cavaliers are thin in the file, 711 complaints across eleven model years. Hydraulic brakes top the 1992, 1993 and 1994. Only the 1993 has a brake recall: 93V121 (July 1993) says its brake hoses were made wrong and could weaken braking or make it uneven, so dealers replaced both rear hoses. Its 2,848 vehicles are the whole campaign, which also took in the Pontiac Sunbird, Buick Century and Oldsmobile Ciera. The largest early recall, 87V079 from May 1987, says a floor pan anchor bar at the driver's seat adjuster can fatigue and break, so the seat tips back without warning. Its 1,136,407 vehicles were 1983-1984 J-cars from five GM brands, the Cavalier among them. On the 1989, recall 88V189 replaced fuel tanks whose underside creases could crack and leak.

A few late Cavaliers ran on compressed natural gas as well as gasoline. Recall 00V053 moved the CNG and coolant lines away from the fuel and brake lines on 391 of the 1998 bi-fuel cars.

The crash and fire columns repeat what Cavalier owners wrote in their complaints; they are not police or fire department records. The first two rows group years that hold only a few dozen complaints each, and a grouped row counts each campaign once. A campaign spanning, say, 1995-1997 is listed against all three years, and that double-listing is why the recall column comes to more than 35.

Fix it or let it go?

Weigh the repair quote against what the Cavalier would fetch running. On a car this age, the quote often comes out higher. A few checks first:

  1. Recall work. The ignition relay kit and the steering bearing were free recall repairs. Look the VIN up before you pay for either.
  2. A 2003 that stalls or won't start. The fuel pump is the pattern in the complaints, with no recall, so it comes down to a quote. What a junk car is worth lays out what pushes an offer up or down.
  3. Engine done? Our blown engine guide covers how to weigh it.
  4. Parked for years? See selling a car that's been sitting.

Selling the Cavalier whole

  1. Gather the VIN, the mileage and what's wrong.
  2. Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where the Cavalier is parked and whether all four tires still hold air.
  4. Don't pull the battery, wheels or catalytic converter. Anything already stripped off the Cavalier belongs on the list you send, since it affects what we can offer.
  5. The driver takes the signed title, so keep a photo ID handy too. Each state treats plates its own way; after you sell sorts them out.

Questions people ask

Which Cavalier model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2003 leads with 678 as of October 10, 2026, almost half of them about the fuel system. Behind it are the 1997 (540), the 1996 (503), the 1998 (345) and the 2004 (330). Years before 1992 have only a few dozen each.
Was the 2003 Cavalier fuel pump ever recalled?
No. NHTSA lists no recall for it, and we found no GM coverage program. The complaints are owner reports: 322 of the 678 complaints on the 2003 name the fuel system, and in an API pull 348 of 388 fuel-related ones mention the pump. A car that stalls or won't start is the usual story.
What did the Cavalier ignition switch recalls fix?
Overheating in the switch when the key is held in Start after the engine fails to catch, which could start a fire in the steering column. Recall 02V070 covered 1995-1997 Cavaliers and 04V036 covered 1998-2001. Dealers installed a relay kit so the high current no longer passes through the switch, and on the later campaign replaced the switch if needed.
The gauges on my 2005 Cavalier went dead. Is there a recall?
Not one listed by NHTSA. It is a common complaint, though: 199 of the 287 complaints on the 2005 name the electrical system, and in an API pull 124 of 210 electrical complaints mention a gauge. Owners describe the speedometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge or tachometer reading nothing.
Will you buy a Cavalier that hasn't run in years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us the last year it started, whether any tire is flat, and if it sits in a backyard, under a carport or at the curb.
