Selling a worn-out or dead Chevy S-10
An S-10 with a tired 4.3, a slipping automatic or a rusted bed can still be sold in one piece. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, small pickups included. Pickup is free anywhere in the US, and you don't strip anything off the truck first.

Two generations, two sets of complaints
Chevrolet sold the S-10 from the 1982 model year through 2004. The counts below are our tally of NHTSA's defect files, downloaded on October 10, 2026, and they begin with the 1984 trucks.
| Generation | Model years | Engines and gearboxes | Assembly plants | Complaints / recalls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First | 1982-1993 | A 2.0 four, then the 2.5 Iron Duke from 1985; 2.8 V6; 4.3 V6 from 1988; an Isuzu 2.2 diesel in 1984-1985. Three- or four-speed automatics, four- or five-speed manuals. | Moraine, Ohio; Shreveport, La.; Pontiac, Mich. | 785 / 12 |
| Second | 1994-2004 | 2.2 four or 4.3 Vortec V6. Four-speed 4L60-E automatic or a five-speed manual. | Shreveport, La.; Linden, N.J. | 5,071 / 23 |
Both first-generation figures, complaints and recalls, cover 1984-1993 only. Two campaigns reach across the 1993-1994 line, so each shows in both rows.
1982-1993: quiet until the anti-lock years
The early trucks drew few complaints, 188 for the 1984-1990 model years put together. Anti-lock brakes arrived for 1989. From the 1991 model year the brake complaints climb fast: 66 on the 1991, 117 on the 1992 and 134 on the 1993.
Two older campaigns matter on these trucks. Recall 93V008 put a new fan on 1989-1992 trucks whose blades can break from fatigue, a hazard to anyone near an open hood. Recall 96V195 covers 1987-1995 trucks whose intermediate steering shaft can loosen at the gear coupling and, NHTSA warns, separate. Dealers retightened the bolts.
1994-2004: brakes, then wipers, then tailgates
The redesigned 1994 is the most complained-about S-10 of all: 970 complaints, 502 of them about the hydraulic brakes. Reading the write-ups for 1991-1996 trucks, 841 of 1,429 brake complaints name ABS or anti-lock. One reads, "anti-lock brake system locked up causing extended stopping distance."
Recall 99V193, filed July 1999, goes after one cause on four-wheel-drive trucks with ABS: the ABS reads the 4WD/2WD position from a switch that can malfunction, and stops in two-wheel drive can then run long. It covers 1991-1996 S-10s built through August 1996, in a campaign of 1,125,749 GM pickups and SUVs. Separately, recall 97V146 covers 1996-1997 pickups with the 4.3, where the front brake line can rub against the oil pan until it leaks. That campaign counted 146,167 trucks.
Wipers come next. Of 883 visibility complaints on the 1994-1998 trucks, 793 are about the wipers. GM recalled the wiper motor twice for cracked solder joints on its circuit board: 98V150 for 1995-1996 trucks (1,557,585 pickups and SUVs) and 03V159 for 1996-1997 (1,755,876 minivans, pickups and SUVs). Both times the fix was a new board and cover.
Air bag complaints peak on the 1995, at 101. Of 276 on the 1994-1998 trucks, 195 say the bag did not deploy, but NHTSA's file shows no S-10 air bag recall. One belt campaign does apply: recall 97V096 covers 1994-1997 extended cabs with a 60/40 bench or manual recliner buckets, where the outboard belt webbing can separate in a frontal crash. Dealers fitted a cover over the recliner. That campaign, 586,058 vehicles, also included two-door utility models.
The tailgate cables NHTSA investigated
From the 2000 model year on, structure is the S-10's top complaint category: 88 on the 2000, 72 on the 2001, 67 on the 2002. Of 356 structure complaints on 1998-2004 trucks, 216 mention the tailgate cables or straps. In one, "both of the tailgate support straps snapped" and the gate dropped.
NHTSA opened probe RQ04-012 on November 22, 2004, then upgraded it to engineering analysis EA05-008 on April 14, 2005, with 749 complaints on file, 29 of them reporting injuries. Its report explains how the cables fail: moisture works in through cracks or the cut ends of the plastic coating and rusts the bare strands inside. It also cites GM's statement, made in an earlier probe, that a supplier process change weakened that coating on vehicles built after October 17, 1999.
In March 2006, GM settled on a Special Policy Notice for 2000-2003 S-10 and GMC Sonoma pickups, 903,464 trucks across both brands. Owners could check the cables at least once a year, or have any GM dealer replace them "at no cost on request of the owner." GM also promised a reminder every two years for twelve years after each truck went into service. Cables broke on 1998-1999 trucks too, at a lower rate, and those years were left out.
The electric S-10
For 1997, GM built a battery-electric S-10 EV using the EV1's front-wheel-drive powertrain. The EPA lists the 1998 truck with an 85 kW motor and two battery packs: lead-acid, rated at 33 miles, and nickel-metal-hydride, rated at 72.
It had four recalls of its own: window fogging (98V177), a charge port that could overheat (00V069), a heater strap rubbing a brake pipe (00V159) and battery-pack software (00V374). The biggest counted 576 trucks, and the software campaign's 492 vehicles include GM's electric cars.
Complaints and recalls, year by year
Each row is the number of owner complaints NHTSA holds for that model year. Campaigns spanning more than one year are tallied under every year they cover, except in the grouped 1984-1990 row, where each one counts a single time.
| Model year | Complaints | Component named most | Recalls |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1984-1990 | 188 | Seat belts lead the 1986, 1987 and 1989 | 6 |
| 1991 | 180 | Service brakes (66) | 6 |
| 1992 | 181 | Service brakes (117) | 3 |
| 1993 | 236 | Service brakes (134) | 4 |
| 1994 | 970 | Service brakes (502) | 5 |
| 1995 | 920 | Service brakes (279) | 5 |
| 1996 | 673 | Service brakes (195) | 7 |
| 1997 | 469 | Visibility (106) | 6 |
| 1998 | 613 | Visibility (195) | 6 |
| 1999 | 231 | Service brakes (30) | 0 |
| 2000 | 473 | Structure (88) | 4 |
| 2001 | 309 | Structure (72) | 1 |
| 2002 | 214 | Structure (67) | 0 |
| 2003 | 178 | Structure (24) | 1 |
| 2004 | 21 | Brakes, air bags, structure and electrical (3 each) | 1 |
Across all years the reports include 773 crashes, 112 fires, 608 injuries and 18 deaths. The 1996 has the most recall campaigns of any single year, seven.
Repair the truck, or sell it?
Set the repair estimate next to what a running S-10 with the same cab and engine sells for. Once the estimate nears that figure, the repair stops making sense.
- Recalls. Run the VIN through NHTSA's lookup. Old campaigns go by VIN and build date, so a truck can carry an open one for decades.
- A new transmission that still shifts hard. GM bulletin PIP5340A covers 1998-2004 S-10s with the 4L60E or 4L65E: after a torque converter or transmission swap, the check engine light can come on with a harsh 1-2 shift and code P0894 or P1870. Take that bulletin number back to the shop before you give up on the truck. Our bad transmission guide covers the rest.
- Cooling repairs on a 1995-2000 4.3. GM's Dex-Cool class action once refunded some cooling-system repairs on these trucks. Claims closed October 27, 2008, so there is nothing left to collect.

How an S-10 sale goes
- Write down the basics: VIN, mileage if the gauge still works, cab style, bed length, two- or four-wheel drive, and what is wrong.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it's parked, from a farm lane to a shop lot, and whether it rolls. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep it complete. The tailgate, the wheels and the catalytic converter all stay on. Anything pulled already should be mentioned, since an incomplete truck draws a different offer.
- When the tow truck comes, sign over the title, show ID and leave any keys. Whether the plates go or stay is a state matter; after you sell sorts it out.

Questions people ask
- Which S-10 model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1994 tops the list with 970. Behind it sit the 1995 (920), the 1996 (673) and the 1998 (613). Brakes are the top complaint on the 1991-1996 trucks, the visibility category on the 1997 and 1998, and the structure category, where the tailgate cables are filed, on 2000-2003.
- Will GM still replace snapped tailgate cables on my S-10?
- It agreed to for 2000-2003 trucks under a Special Policy Notice in March 2006: an owner could inspect the cables every year or have any GM dealer swap them at no charge. GM promised reminder letters for twelve years from each truck's in-service date. NHTSA's report gives no end date for the free swap itself, so ask a Chevrolet dealer to run your VIN before you count on it. The 1998 and 1999 trucks were never part of the policy.
- Is the four-wheel-drive ABS recall on my truck?
- If you have a 1991-1996 S-10 with four-wheel drive and ABS, it may be. Recall 99V193 covers trucks built from September 1989 through August 1996, where a faulty 2WD/4WD switch can stretch an ABS stop in two-wheel drive. Its 1,125,749-vehicle count is for the whole campaign, which also took in other GM pickups and SUVs. A VIN lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls settles it.
- Do you buy an S-10 that has sat for years and won't turn over?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes small pickups. Tell us the year, cab, bed length and engine, and whether the wheels still roll. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- I own an S-10 EV. Is that a different sale?
- The steps match a gas truck's. Just mention the electric drive and its battery type up front. Its drive parts are nothing like a gas S-10's. The EPA rated the 1998 version at 33 miles on lead-acid batteries and 72 on nickel-metal-hydride.
