Selling a dead or worn-out Chevrolet TrailBlazer
A TrailBlazer with dead gauges, a fuel gauge stuck on empty or an engine that has given up can be sold as it is, unrepaired. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. You don't have to take a single part off first.

Chevrolet put the name on two unrelated vehicles: a truck-based mid-size SUV for 2002-2009 and a small crossover from the 2021 model year on. Their problems differ, so each gets its own section below.
Two vehicles under one badge
| 2002-2009 TrailBlazer | 2021-on Trailblazer | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Mid-size SUV on GM's truck-based GMT360 platform; long three-row EXT through 2006 | Subcompact unibody crossover on GM's VSS-F platform, related to the Buick Encore GX |
| Engines | 4.2-liter inline-six in every year; 5.3-liter V8 from 2003; 6.0-liter V8 in the 2006-2009 SS | 1.2-liter or 1.3-liter turbo three-cylinder |
| Transmission | Four-speed automatic (4L60E, or 4L70E with the 6.0) | CVT with front drive; nine-speed automatic with all-wheel drive |
| Built at | Moraine, Ohio; the EXT at Oklahoma City | GM Korea, Incheon, South Korea |
| NHTSA complaints / recalls | 7,957 / 25 | 444 / 5 |
There was no US TrailBlazer for 2010 through 2020. The last one left the Moraine line on December 16, 2008, GM closed that plant a week later, and the Traverse took over the TrailBlazer's spot.
The 2002-2009 SUV, fault by fault
Gauges going haywire (2002-2005)
On the 2004, 697 of the 1,368 complaints sent to NHTSA mention the gauges, speedometer, tachometer or instrument cluster. Owners write about needles swinging at random or falling to zero at highway speed. Another 282 complaints on the 2003 tell much the same story.
GM recalled the 2002 once for its cluster (03V096), because at start-up it "may not properly power up," and dealers reprogrammed it. That campaign does not reach later gauge failures, and our research found no GM warranty extension that does.
A full tank that reads empty (2005-2007)
The 2005 drew more complaints than any other TrailBlazer year, 1,734, and 451 of them mention the fuel gauge or fuel level. The subject comes up in 482 complaints on the 2006 and 212 on the 2007. Owners fill the tank and watch the needle stay on E, or swing between full and empty while they drive.
GM's special coverage 10054E names the cause: contacts on the fuel level sensor "may wear prematurely." Dealers fitted a new-design sensor, and the program ran "for a period of 10 years or 120,000 miles" counted "from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership." No 2005-2007 TrailBlazer is still inside that decade.
Fuel tank check valve (2002-2004)
A separate program, 14423C, covered an inlet check valve in the fuel tank that "could fracture" on 2002-2004 TrailBlazers and EXTs. The signs are a Service Engine Soon light and fuel droplets on the tank at refueling. GM paid "for a period of 15 years or 150,000 miles," and that window has closed on the youngest of these SUVs too.
Driver's door switches and fire risk (2006-2007)
Four recalls (12V406, 13V248, 14V404 and 15V599) deal with the master switch module in the driver's door of 2006-2007 TrailBlazers and the 2006 EXT. Fluid can seep in and corrode its circuit board. The recall notices warn that "A fire could occur even while the vehicle is not in use," and the first three advised owners to park outside until the repair was made. The 2012 campaign reached only SUVs sold or registered in certain states. The 2015 one swapped out modules that had earlier been given only a protective coating, since the coating "may not eliminate the risk" of a short.
Most of those campaigns also cover the GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7x, so a figure like the 2012 campaign's 278,174 vehicles is not a TrailBlazer count. On the 2007, 57 complaints mention a power window or window switch.
Headlamps that shut off (2006-2007)
Recall 15V519 covers a headlamp driver module that "may overheat and fail," taking the headlamps and daytime running lights with it. Its 429,170 vehicles include the Pontiac Grand Prix, Buick LaCrosse and other GM models.
The 2002's long recall list
The first model year collected 13 recalls, the most of any TrailBlazer year. Among them: front lower control arm brackets that could crack and let the arm separate from the frame (01V126), a transfer case calibration that could let a four-wheel-drive SUV roll while in Park (01V334), a fuel filter fitting that could come apart and stop the engine (02V121), and a driver air bag inflator that could fracture at a weld (02V222). Later 2002-2004 campaigns fixed wiper modules that took on water, loose tail lamp bulbs, a turn signal flasher and salt-corroded rear door latches.
The 2021-on crossover
The newer Trailblazer has 444 complaints across six model years, with no single fault on top; for 2021 and 2022 the biggest group is NHTSA's "unknown or other." Its five recalls are small or shared with other GM vehicles:
- 20V588: a brake boost sensor connection on some 2021s that could cut power assist, so stopping takes more pedal force.
- 21V440: an emergency jack that can fracture if it isn't placed the way the manual says (2021-2022, along with the Buick Encore GX).
- 26V539: a rearview camera that may show a distorted or blank image (2024-2026). Its 306,511 vehicles also include the Buick Envista and Encore GX and the 2025 Trax.
- 20V537 and 20V295: rear bolts on one or both front seats that "may not have been installed," and a tire label missing the size and pressure data. The 105 vehicles in 20V537 include 2020 Buick Encore GX models; all 20 in 20V295 are Trailblazers.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Every figure below is our own tally of NHTSA's raw files as of October 10, 2026. Multi-year campaigns sit in each year they touch, so the recall column overshoots 30. "Fire reported" means the owner's complaint mentions a fire. Chevrolet sold no 2001 or 2014 TrailBlazer in the US, yet 21 complaints name those years, and they stay in the total.
| Model year | Complaints | Most-named component | Fire reported | Recalls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2001 | 20 | Power train | 0 | 0 |
| 2002 | 1,264 | Power train | 39 | 13 |
| 2003 | 1,239 | Electrical system | 21 | 9 |
| 2004 | 1,368 | Electrical system | 34 | 2 |
| 2005 | 1,734 | Electrical system | 27 | 2 |
| 2006 | 1,347 | Fuel system | 64 | 8 |
| 2007 | 782 | Fuel system | 58 | 5 |
| 2008 | 195 | Electrical system | 11 | 0 |
| 2009 | 28 | Exterior lighting | 0 | 0 |
| 2014 | 1 | Engine | 0 | 0 |
| 2021 | 195 | Unknown or other | 3 | 4 |
| 2022 | 110 | Unknown or other | 0 | 1 |
| 2023 | 71 | Service brakes | 2 | 0 |
| 2024 | 33 | Electrical system | 0 | 1 |
| 2025 | 25 | Electrical system | 0 | 1 |
| 2026 | 10 | Three-way tie | 0 | 1 |
| Total | 8,422 | Electrical system | 259 | 30 campaigns |
The fire column is highest on the 2006 (64) and the 2007 (58), the same two years the door switch recalls cover.
Worth fixing, or time to sell?
Set a written repair quote beside the going price of a running TrailBlazer with similar miles. When the quote eats most of that price, selling it unrepaired usually comes out ahead. A few TrailBlazer checks first:
- Open recalls. Enter the 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. On a 2006-2007, look for the door switch and headlamp module campaigns; dealers do recall work at no charge.
- Dead gauges on a 2002-2005. Price the cluster before writing off the whole SUV.
- Fuel gauge stuck on E on a 2005-2007. That fits the sensor wear GM described, though by its terms GM's coverage for it has run out. A dealer can check your VIN.
- Engine or transmission gone. See blown engine and bad transmission.
How the sale works
- Describe it: model year, six-cylinder or V8 (or the turbo three on a crossover), the odometer reading, and the fault that parked it.
- Get your offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Location and condition: a driveway, a back lot or a mechanic's bay. Flat tires or a stuck transfer case are fine; flag them so the right truck is sent. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep it intact. The wheels, battery and converter should still be bolted on when the truck comes. Anything pulled off earlier gets mentioned up front, since it moves the offer.
- Handover: the signed title, the keys and your ID. Your state decides whether the plates come off; after you sell lists each state's rule.
Lost the title? Read the no-title guide. Looking at other Chevrolet SUVs? See the Traverse, Blazer and Equinox, or the full Chevrolet list.
Questions people ask
- Which TrailBlazer model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2005, with 1,734 complaints as of October 10, 2026. The 2004 (1,368), the 2006 (1,347), the 2002 (1,264) and the 2003 (1,239) follow. Gauge and fuel gauge reports make up a big share of those years. The crossover sold since 2021 has 444 complaints across all of its years.
- Will GM still fix the fuel gauge on a 2005-2007 TrailBlazer?
- Not under special coverage 10054E, by its own terms. Its clock started when each SUV was first put on the road and stopped after a decade or 120,000 miles, and the youngest 2007 crossed the decade mark years ago. A GM dealer can pull up your VIN to confirm.
- Is the 2021 Trailblazer just a newer version of the old TrailBlazer?
- No. The 2002-2009 TrailBlazer is a truck-based SUV built in Ohio with a six or a V8 and a four-speed automatic. The Trailblazer sold since 2021 is a small unibody crossover built by GM Korea with a three-cylinder turbo. Their complaint and recall records have nothing in common.
- The window switch on my 2006 TrailBlazer burned out. Was that recalled?
- Possibly. Four GM recalls cover the driver's door switch module on 2006-2007 TrailBlazers and the 2006 EXT, because fluid can corrode its circuit board and cause a short or a fire. If the campaign still shows as open on nhtsa.gov/recalls for your VIN, the module was never replaced.
- Do you take a TrailBlazer that has been parked for years?
- Yes. It can be dead, rusty or missing its battery; we buy whole non-running and junk cars. Pickup is free anywhere in the US. Roughly when did it last run, are the tires flat, and what's the address? Those three answers are enough to start.
