Selling a dead or junk car in Longmont

Longmont lets each lot keep one junked car in plain sight, provided it wears the right cover. Section 11.12.050 permits "a maximum of one vehicle per lot or parcel of real property" if it is "entirely covered with a one-piece opaque, heavy tarp or commercial car cover, securely fastened at all times." A second dead car, or a tarp the wind has peeled back, falls outside that allowance. If wrestling with a cover has lost its charm, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. Sell the whole car as it sits; pickup is free anywhere in the US.

What counts as junked in Longmont

The definitions in Section 11.12.030 reach any vehicle that "is wrecked, damaged or substantially dismantled to the extent that such vehicle is inoperable." Section 11.12.050 then bars an owner or tenant from letting one sit on "any real property in the city," and keeps it off streets and public land as well.

Longmont's affirmative defenses:

  • a lawfully zoned vehicle repair or storage business holds the car
  • it is "stored within a completely enclosed structure"
  • one per lot, fully under a fastened one-piece opaque cover
  • outside residential areas, a concealing fence of at least six feet
  • one per lot "currently undergoing repair or is awaiting the settlement of an insurance claim," as long as it is "removed or brought into compliance within 90 days"

The insurance clause is the trap. Three months on, the car has to be fixed or gone, whatever the adjuster is doing. A claim that ends in a write-off is covered in insurer totaled it.

Public streets: two days

In Longmont, a car on public property, streets and alleys too, becomes abandoned or "publicly kept" when it sits there "for 48 hours or longer." After a tow, police contact the owner by certified letter or in person within five regular business days of getting the state's ownership report. Should a hearing find the tow broke the chapter's standards, the code says towing and storage charges "shall be forgiven or paid by the city."

A city in two counties

Longmont sits across the Boulder-Weld county line. For most things, Colorado has you use the motor vehicle office in your home county. For Boulder County addresses, that means the office on 33rd Street in the city of Boulder: number 1750, ZIP 80301, telephone 303-413-7710. It lies roughly 13 miles southwest of downtown Longmont as the crow flies. Homes on the Weld side use a Weld County office instead.

Paperwork for a Colorado sale

Each owner printed on the title's face signs the Seller block on the back, spelling the name the same way the front does. Write in the price and sale date. Models from 2011 on, inside their first 20 years, also need an odometer entry. You will find no notary requirement in the DMV's seller list. Longmont sellers should use a DR 2173 bill of sale, and it is required when the title lists no price.

Colorado plates go with the person, not the car, so hang on to them. In Longmont, standard plates can be returned to the county or a metal recycler. After a Longmont sale, file Report Release of Liability within five days, either on myDMV or at the county counter. And once Colorado labels a car junk, the state will not title it again. After you sell has the full list.

Questions people ask

Is one dead car allowed at a Longmont home?
Yes, one per lot, provided a single opaque cover (a heavy tarp or commercial car cover) wraps the whole car and stays fastened. An enclosed garage also works. More than that runs into Section 11.12.050.
A Longmont car is waiting on an insurance settlement. What is the limit?
Ninety days. Section 11.12.050 lets one car per lot sit while under repair or pending an insurance settlement, but it must be gone or compliant by then.
Longmont spans two counties. So which office is mine?
Whichever county your home is in, since Colorado county offices do not serve other counties' residents. For Boulder County we checked 1750 33rd Street in Boulder (303-413-7710). Weld County residents go to Weld.
