Selling a dead or junk car in Ridgefield

Ridgefield's rule is about how the car is used, not how it looks. Section 349-1 says no one may keep "one or more unregistered motor vehicles, or used parts of a motor vehicle or motor vehicles, upon any premises within the Town of Ridgefield unless such motor vehicle or motor vehicles are in an operative condition and in actual use on the premises of the owner." A tidy, covered car with lapsed registration that never moves still fails that test. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

What Chapter 349 covers

The two-part test. An unregistered car outdoors in Ridgefield is legal only if it both works and gets real use on the owner's premises. One that runs but never leaves the yard is open to question. One that does not run fails outright.

Parts count too. The ban reaches "used parts of a motor vehicle." A stack of take-off doors and an engine block behind the garage are covered just like a whole car.

The exceptions. Section 349-2 exempts cars kept "within a building," and businesses licensed by the state motor vehicle department and approved by Ridgefield's Planning and Zoning Commission.

The fine. Up to $100 per offense, and "a separate offense shall be deemed committed upon each day during or on which a violation occurs or continues." A month of ignoring it is thirty offenses.

The excerpt we reviewed sets no notice period before the fine, so act once you know the car is out of compliance. A stalled restoration? Try classic project car. Two or three of them? See selling several junk cars.

Connecticut title steps

Ridgefield Town Hall prints no titles; that is the state DMV's work. The office we looked at for Ridgefield is the Danbury branch, 2 Lee Mac Avenue, about 6 miles northeast of town on a map. Full-service hub offices do every kind of transaction.

  • Titled car. Sign the seller spot on the back of the certificate. Your Ridgefield buyer gets that and a bill of sale, either H-31 or your own. The DMV's seller steps include no notary.
  • Older than 20 model years. These carry no title. Your signed Q-1 and the latest registration certificate are what the buyer needs.
  • Headed to a recycler. Licensed recyclers must receive the title for any car required to have one, and they stamp it "JUNKED."

Unregistered does not mean done with the DMV

When a registration lapses, it is easy to forget the plates are still tied to you. Cancel the registration and hold on to the receipt. Keep that slip, Ridgefield sellers. With no Connecticut release-of-liability form to file, a Ridgefield seller keeps the slip as proof. Keep it. Until the cancellation clears, Ridgefield can still tax the car, so leave the insurance in place. And if its every-other-year emissions test is coming due, selling first makes the test moot.
