Selling a junk car in Shelton

In Shelton, rolling a dead car to the back of the yard does not buy time. The city code is direct in section 16-108: "a property owner that moves the motor vehicle on the property does not exempt said vehicle." When the 30-day notice runs out, the car can be towed and the owner pays, while a fine grows each day. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you sell the whole car as it sits. Pickup is free anywhere in the US, so the truck comes to Shelton too.

How Shelton's private-property rule works

Section 16-108 applies to any car on private land that is "abandoned or inoperable or unregistered." The steps run in this order:

  1. The zoning enforcement officer asks the property owner to remove the car, and a general notice is published.
  2. The clock starts: thirty days.
  3. A car that "remains unmoved for a period exceeding thirty (30) days" is taken by "an approved City of Shelton towing company as authorized by the police department."

The bill lands on the landowner: "the cost of the removal" plus a fine of "not more than one hundred dollars ($100.00) for each day (each day being a separate offense)." Shelton police may also write a city ordinance violation before the tow truck arrives. That means a renter's broken-down car can end up as a fine for the landlord, so bring it up early.

Street towing and impound in Shelton

Police here may have a commercial service tow a car parked illegally where it creates a traffic hazard, blocks a hydrant, or gets in the way of emergency vehicles or people on foot. Section 16-45 requires the owner be told within forty-eight hours, as state statute 14-150(d) sets out, and that statute allows a 10-day window to challenge it. Section 16-126 bars the tow company from handing back an impounded car "without proper order of the impounding authority," so get that order first.

Commercial vehicles get far less slack. Section 16-27.1 allows one hour on a "city street or public right-of-way" unless the truck is mid-delivery; repeat violations bring "a ninety-nine dollar ($99.00) fine" each, and the vehicle "may be towed and impounded."

Shelton title work, the H-31 and your plates

Connecticut's DMV issues titles; Shelton City Hall does not. For Shelton we checked the Waterbury office at 2210 Thomaston Avenue, about 21 miles north of the city center on a map line. A routine sale rarely calls for a trip that far, since the steps work on paper.

Sign the certificate on its back. Shelton sellers can use Form H-31 as the bill of sale. If you make one yourself in Shelton, list the buyer, the seller and their addresses; the VIN, color and model details; the sale price; the date; and the seller's signature. Copy both papers before they leave your hands.

That title is what lets a dead Shelton car be scrapped. If a car needs a Connecticut title, no licensed recycler can accept it without the title or an insurer's copy, and the recycler stamps it "JUNKED." Lost your Shelton title? File Form H-6B for a new one for $25, sent by mail within 20 business days. Junk car with no title has other routes.

Pull the plates off; they stay with you. The DMV's online cancellation runs about seven minutes, and its receipt becomes your proof, since Connecticut offers no separate release form. Hold your liability policy until the cancellation is final. More state detail sits on the Connecticut page.

Questions people ask

Does pushing the car to another spot on my Shelton lot restart the 30 days?
No. Section 16-108 states that moving the car around the property does not take it out of the article. The 30-day clock keeps running wherever it sits on the lot.
Who pays when Shelton removes a junk car from private land?
The landowner. Shelton bills removal to the property owner and can add a fine of not more than $100 for every day the car outlasted the 30-day notice.
Will a Connecticut recycler accept my Shelton junk car with no title?
Only with the title in hand, when the car is one Connecticut requires to be titled. State law allows an insurer's copy as the substitute, and the recycler marks the paper JUNKED.
Does Shelton notify owners after a police tow?
Yes. Section 16-45 requires notice to the owner inside forty-eight hours, following state statute 14-150(d). That statute then gives a 10-day window to challenge the tow.
