Sell a dead or worn-out Dodge Durango

On the 1999 Durango, 1,029 of 1,967 owner complaints to NHTSA name the suspension. That one year accounts for over a third of the 2,460 suspension complaints filed on every Durango, and suspension is the component owners name most across the model.

Three generations, three different stories

Figures here are NHTSA's, tallied October 10, 2026. Four more complaints sit under a 1997 model year.

First generation (1998-2003): a Dakota underneath

Wikipedia describes the first Durango as body-on-frame and based on the Dodge Dakota, built at Newark Assembly in Delaware. Its listed engine is the 3.9-liter Magnum V6 with a 4-speed TorqueFlite automatic.

The six Durango years carry 5,434 complaints, and suspension is the top issue in each, from 502 on the 1998 to 77 on the 2003. Recall 04V596000 covers 2000-2003 four-wheel-drive trucks, where water seeping into the front upper ball joints could flush out the grease and rust the joint. Its 592,707 vehicles include pickups as well as SUVs. Recall 07V555000 covers 2001-2002 trucks whose park interlock could let the shifter leave Park without the key.

Second generation (2004-2009): Hemi, hybrid and air bags

The second Durango kept the body-on-frame layout and the Newark plant. Engines were the 3.7 V6, a 4.7 V8 that could run on E85, the 5.7 Hemi V8, and a 5.7 Hemi hybrid.

There are 3,925 complaints across these years. Engine complaints lead the 2004 (292 under "engine," 228 more under "engine and engine cooling"). The gasoline fuel system leads the 2005 (517 of 1,567) and the 2006 (396 of 852).

The recalls that matter most here are air bag inflators, and NHTSA marks them DO NOT DRIVE:

  • 15V313000: driver's inflator on 2004-2008 Durangos.
  • 16V352000: passenger's inflator, 2004-2009.
  • 16V947000: driver's inflator on the 2009, with the Chrysler Aspen and some Ram 3500 cab chassis.

The first two are giant campaigns, each over 4 million vehicles, spread across Ram trucks, the Chrysler 300 and other models. They are not Durango counts.

The hybrid barely existed. Wikipedia puts Durango and Aspen hybrid production at about 800, and Chrysler dropped it two months after launch. Chrysler also announced it would shut down the Newark plant, and the Durango skipped 2010.

Third generation (2011 on): a Grand Cherokee twin

The current Durango is a unibody built alongside the Jeep Grand Cherokee at Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit. Engines include the 3.6 Pentastar V6, the 5.7 and 6.4 Hemi V8s, and a 710-horsepower supercharged 6.2 in the 2021 SRT Hellcat.

From 2011 through 2026 there are 4,504 complaints. Electrical leads the 2011 (435 of 800), 2012 and 2013. Several recalls cover the same Durango and Grand Cherokee years:

  • Brake booster (2011-2014): 14V154000 added a water shield to the booster; 17V572000 went back to check that shield was fitted right.
  • Alternator (2011-2014): 14V634000 replaced it; 17V435000 inspected and replaced more.
  • Vanity lamp wiring in the sun visor (14V391000, plus 15V879000 for 2011-2013).
  • Fuel pump relay on 2011-2013 trucks with the 3.6, 5.7 or 6.4 (19V813000).

Exterior lighting complaints lead most Durango years from 2014 on. On 2021-2022 trucks, recall 22V140000 updated ABS software that could stop stability control from working right, and 24V436000 updated radio software for the rear camera. Wikipedia also notes an August 2012 recall of 1,661 2013 Durangos whose air bags might not deploy.

The newest trucks show 14 complaints for 2024, 8 for 2025 and 13 for 2026. Those trucks have been out only briefly, which keeps their tallies low.

Is it worth fixing?

Get the Durango repair estimate on paper and compare it to what a running Durango like yours sells for. A thin gap points toward selling it unfixed. Some things to sort out first:

How to sell a Durango whole

  1. Keep the VIN and odometer reading close, with notes on the trouble.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the spot it's in and if it rolls and steers. A collapsed front end is fine; the truck crew just needs to know.
  4. Leave it complete. If parts went missing, tell us which; that changes the number.
  5. The title and a photo ID go with the truck. No title? Start with selling with no title.

Questions people ask

Which Durango model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1999 tops the list at 1,967, per NHTSA's October 10, 2026 file. The 2005 (1,567), 2004 (1,115), 2000 (1,075) and 1998 (965) follow. Trucks from 2024 to 2026 are too new to have drawn many yet, so their counts aren't comparable.
Why is there no 2010 Durango?
Dodge dropped the Durango after the 2009 model year, partly over slow sales but mostly because the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep dealer networks merged, Wikipedia says. The third generation went on sale as a 2011 model, built in Detroit beside the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Can a Durango with an open do-not-drive inflator recall be sold?
Yes, and nobody has to drive it. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. A VIN search at nhtsa.gov/recalls beforehand shows which campaigns are still open on it.
Do I need to pull the third-row seat or the wheels before selling?
No. Sell the whole car as it sits. If someone already pulled parts, list them up front; the offer depends on what's there.
