Selling a dead or broken Fiat 500e

The first Fiat 500e was a US-only car. Wikipedia says FCA built it at Toluca, Mexico, from December 2012 to June 2019 and sold it in a limited number of states. Those early cars account for 47 of the 52 NHTSA complaints on the 500e.

The first 500e: 2013-2016 in the complaint file

Wikipedia describes this car as a battery-electric version of the 2007-generation Fiat 500. Our October 10, 2026 count of NHTSA complaints puts the electrical system first on the 2013, 2014 and 2015, and tied for first on the 2016. It has four recalls of its own:

  • 13V358, 2013: half-shaft joints may loosen and separate, causing noise and loss of drive. Dealers replace the fasteners. 491 vehicles.
  • 14V235, 2013-2014: a problem with the cooling plates in the power inverter module. Dealers replace the module. 4,141 vehicles.
  • 15V179, 2013-2015: software that doesn't match between modules if the car goes into limp-home mode. Dealers update it. 5,660 vehicles.
  • 16V303, 2013-2016: the power inverter module may see voltage spikes that can affect the propulsion system. Dealers update its software, starting July 5, 2016. 16,584 vehicles.

NHTSA also files recall 15V291 under the gas Fiat 500 for 2013-2015 battery-electric cars. Its fix reprograms the Electric Vehicle Control Unit.

The newer 500e: 2024 on

The current car is built at Mirafiori in Turin, a plant FCA said in July 2019 it would put €700 million into for this model. Wikipedia lists 24 kWh and 42 kWh battery packs. The 2024 has 5 complaints on file, from a car that has been sold for only a short time.

Recall 25V715 covers 2024-2025 cars whose headlight horizontal aim adjustment isn't covered as it should be. Dealers fit adjustment plugs; letters went out December 10, 2025. The 2024 is also in recall 24V510, for a seat belt buckle sensor that may be connected wrong. That campaign's 337,128 vehicles also include Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio, Fiat 500X and Jeep Renegade models, so the number is not the 500e's.

Fix or sell

Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup first. An early 500e that stops driving may have an inverter recall still open, and that work is free. If the battery pack itself is done, EV battery failed walks through what to weigh. For warning lights and module faults, see electrical problems.

Selling a 500e whole

  1. Have the VIN, the mileage and the charge state. Say whether it powers on at all.
  2. Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us if your 500e goes into Neutral, and where it's parked. A dead EV often can't be shifted, and the truck needs to know.
  4. Leave the charge cable with it if you have it, along with the title and keys.

Questions people ask

Which Fiat 500e years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2013 and 2014 500e lead with 16 apiece in our October 10, 2026 tally. Next come the 2015 at 11, the 2024 at 5 and the 2016 at 4. The 2024 has also been on sale for far less time than the early cars.
What did the 2013-2016 500e recalls fix?
Four recalls cover those years: loose half-shaft joint fasteners (13V358), power inverter module cooling plates (14V235), software that clashed in limp-home mode (15V179), and inverter voltage spikes (16V303). All were free at a dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Will you buy a 500e that won't charge or drive?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, electric ones included, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention if it can be put in Neutral, and give the address.
