Selling a junk or dead car in Edgewater

Edgewater sets a high bar for a car to count as working. Its traffic code says "a vehicle shall be deemed inoperable if it cannot be immediately started and legally driven," and that includes cars "that do not display a valid tag." A car that needs a jump and a new registration fails twice. If that is your situation, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. Sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

No storage on any premises

Section 10-208 is short and sweeping: "no inoperative or unlicensed vehicle shall be parked, kept or stored on any premises (including public property) and no vehicle shall at any time be in a state of major disassembly, disrepair or in the process of being stripped or dismantled." The one opening is for real work done indoors. A major overhaul, body work included, is fine on your own property if done in an approved enclosed space.

The Edgewater officer's checklist

Section 10-113 lets code enforcement label a car inoperable, abandoned or wrecked if any of these apply:

  • its condition endangers health or safety
  • discarded junk piles up around it
  • no valid tag, registration or restoration permit
  • wrecked, stripped, or missing a major part

Once labeled, such a car "shall not be stored in any zoning district except as provided for in section 10-114." The general nuisance section, 10-5, names an "inoperable or unlicensed motor vehicle" outright.

48 hours on the street

Section 17-28 lets police or code officers order a tow from a street, sidewalk, parking lot, or public or private property. Two triggers fit a dead car. One is a car "parked or stored upon a street or public right-of-way for a period exceeding 48 hours subsequent to placing notice of on the vehicle." The other is a disabled or inoperable car left in a right-of-way 48 hours after a notice goes on it. Junk cars on public property fall under chapter 17 article IV.

Florida's chapter 325, the old inspection law, is gone from the statutes. A car sold on a derelict certificate is scrapped, never retitled. See selling with no title.

Questions people ask

My Edgewater car starts but the tag has expired. Is it inoperable?
Under the towing section, yes. Section 17-28: "A vehicle shall be deemed inoperable if it cannot be immediately started and legally driven and shall include abandoned and/or wrecked vehicles or vehicles that do not display a valid tag."
May an unregistered car sit in an Edgewater driveway?
Section 10-208 says "no inoperative or unlicensed vehicle shall be parked, kept or stored on any premises (including public property)," unless another rule allows it. Section 10-113 accepts a current vehicle restoration permit in place of a tag.
Can I rebuild an engine at my Edgewater home?
Yes, indoors. Major overhaul and body work are allowed "if such work is performed inside a structure or similarly enclosed area designed and approved for such purposes."
What will a replacement Florida title cost me?
Expect $75.25 at the counter, and Fast Title costs $10.00 on top; the form is HSMV 82101. No charge applies when the post office lost it and you apply within 180 days after issue.
