What the Aspire was
Ford sold the Aspire in North America from 1994 through 1997 to replace the Festiva. It was the second-generation Festiva, developed by Kia and Ford and built by Kia in South Korea, and the new name brought a five-door to this market for the first time.
Every U.S. car has a Mazda-designed 1.3-liter four, rated at 72 hp in the Festiva. Buyers chose a stick with five gears or an automatic with three, and the automatic took 16.2 seconds to reach 60 mph. EPA ratings run from 24 to 31 mpg in town and 29 to 39 on the highway, depending on gearbox and year.
It was the first car in its class with dual air bags as standard, and anti-lock brakes were optional. The three-door came as a base car or an SE with fog lights, a spoiler, alloy wheels and a tachometer; the five-door came only as the base car. The 1997 got new bumpers, a new radio and new seat fabric, and then Ford dropped the Aspire on slow sales. NHTSA rated the 1995 and 1997 four stars for both front seats in its front crash test.
What owners reported
NHTSA holds 211 complaints across the four model years, and the component named most is air bags, with 49. The reports run both ways. A 1994 owner said neither bag fired when the car hit a deer head-on at 40 mph. A 1997 owner said the bag struck a belted teenage passenger in the face in a 25 mph crash into a light pole. No recall or Ford bulletin we found explains either pattern.
Fuel lines and wiring are the other worries. Recall 94V186 covered 26,700 1994 Aspires whose fuel hoses and lines could touch or sit too close to other parts, wear through, and leak fuel in the engine bay, where it could catch fire. The fix moved the lines, replaced damaged rubber hoses and repaired the corrosion coating on steel lines. Fuel system complaints show up again on the 1997 (9 of 60), including a line pouring gasoline and a tank that cracked while driving. Electrical faults draw 24 complaints, among them a 1997 under-hood fire near the wiring harness that the fire department had to put out.
Across all four years, 42 complaints report a crash and seven a fire. One 1995 owner said the manual's gear lever snapped off on the road.
The other recall, 94V141, is paperwork: 599 of the 1994 cars left the factory with no build date on the certification label.
Complaints and recalls by model year
These are NHTSA's counts as of October 10, 2026. The air bag column is a subset of each year's complaints.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Air bag complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1994 | 54 | 16 | 15 | 2 |
| 1995 | 64 | 17 | 17 | 0 |
| 1996 | 33 | 3 | 6 | 0 |
| 1997 | 60 | 6 | 11 | 0 |
| Total | 211 | 42 | 49 | 2 |
The two early years account for 33 of the 42 crash reports.
Repair, or sell it whole?
We have no sourced repair prices for the Aspire. Get a quote, then check what running Aspires are listed for near you. If you smell fuel under the hood, park it: the 1994 recall and the 1997 complaints both involve leaking fuel. Thinking of selling the parts off one by one instead? Our page on parting out versus selling whole compares the two.
Selling your Aspire
Find the title and note the VIN and mileage. Then ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008, and say what's wrong, whether it starts, and where it's parked. Leave the car complete, wheels and catalytic converter included; if a part is already gone, say so, because it changes the offer. The title and keys change hands when the truck comes. Plates are a state-by-state question; after you sell answers it for yours.
Questions people ask
- Which Aspire year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1995, with 64 as of October 10, 2026. The 1997 has 60, the 1994 has 54 and the 1996 has 33. Air bags are the most-named component on three of the four years.
- Is the Aspire the same car as the Festiva?
- It is the second-generation Festiva, developed by Kia and Ford, under a new name for North America. It replaced the first Festiva here and added a five-door body.
- Will you buy an Aspire with a fuel leak?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention the leak when you ask for an offer, and don't drive the car to meet the truck.
