Selling an old or dead Ford Crown Victoria

Most of these sedans are old enough that repairs rarely make sense. Many also lived hard lives as police cars or taxis. Below is what NHTSA's records show for each era, which recalls targeted fleet cars, and how to hand the car over whole.

Four eras of the big Ford

Ford sold the LTD Crown Victoria for the 1980-1991 model years. NHTSA files its complaints and recalls under Crown Victoria, so this page starts with the 1984 model. The car you probably picture, built at St. Thomas Assembly in Ontario, ran from January 1991 until September 15, 2011. Our counts come from NHTSA's public files, pulled October 10, 2026.

Long-running campaigns cover years on both sides of an era change, so those recalls appear in two rows.

1984-1991: switches, wiring and fires

The LTD-era cars have few complaints, but a large share of them describe fires: 77 of 307. The electrical system leads nearly every one of those years. When Ford dropped the 5.0 and 5.8 for 1992, the police package became the P71 with a single 210 hp 4.6-liter V8.

1992-1997: steering, suspension and cruise control

This is the busiest era in NHTSA's file, with 1,503 complaints. On the 1995, 92 of 251 name the steering. Three recalls hit the front end:

  • 95V194 (October 1995): bolts holding the front upper control arms on 1993-1994 cars can loosen and crack the frame bracket. If the driver's side cracks at both holes, steering control can go.
  • 96V135 (July 1996): Pitman arm ball joints on 1995-1996 cars left the plant without full grease. Corrosion can wear the joint until it pulls apart.
  • 98V322 (December 1998): lower control arm ball joints on 1996-1999 police, fleet and natural gas Crown Victorias. Dealers replace both.

Speed control is a theme too, with 202 complaints across all years. Recall 99V124 (May 1999) replaced a speed control deactivation switch that could short and start a fire at the left front of the engine bay. NHTSA's file lists it for the 1992-1993 Crown Victoria. Recall 08V051 (February 2008) went back to 1992-1998 cars whose earlier cruise control repair used a harness that put the fuse in the output circuit, where it may not protect against a short to ground.

On the 1996 and 1997, the engine and its cooling system lead (72 and 78 complaints). No recall or bulletin we read explains them.

1998-2002: police and natural gas cars

Police buyers got this generation as the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. It kept the P71 code through 2009, then became the P7B for 2010-2011. A compressed natural gas version was offered until Ford dropped it for 2005. Two recalls are only for the gas cars. One, 02V249, fixed a T-fitting between tanks that could leak, on 574 2002 cars. The other, 03V472, added an insulator behind the rear seat of 1996-2003 cars. A fire inside the car could otherwise weaken the fiberglass-wrapped tank behind that seat.

2003-2011: headlights, wheels and steering shafts

Ford redesigned nearly the whole chassis for 2003, and the 2003 became the year with the most complaints: 327. Wheels lead with 100 and exterior lighting follows with 92. The lights problem has a recall. Recall 15V861 covers the lighting control module on 2003-2005 cars built October 3, 2001 to August 2, 2005; when it fails, the headlights go out. Ford filed it in December 2015, and the repair campaign began April 14, 2017. One owner's report reads: "LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE FAILED, CAUSING LOSS OF HEADLIGHTS."

Fleet cars got their own wheel recalls. Recalls 03V279 and 07V079 replaced steel wheels that could crack near the rim weld on police and taxi cars, 109,664 vehicles by the second campaign. Recall 04V328 replaced rear wheel bearings, seals and axle shafts on 2003 fleet cars. Ford said the heavier loads those cars carry could overload the axles.

From 2006 on, steering leads every year. Recall 13V385 (August 2013) replaced corroded lower intermediate steering shafts on 2005-2011 Crown Victorias, police cars included, sold or registered in the states the recall names, most of them in the Northeast and Midwest. Recall 14V704 followed for cars where the upper shaft was serviced wrong during that repair. The last Police Interceptor, built in August 2011, went to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Complaints, fires and recalls by model year

We counted these from NHTSA's bulk data the day this page was updated, October 10, 2026. "Fire" counts complaints where the owner reported a fire. For grouped rows, a recall that covers more than one of those years is counted once.

Worth fixing, or time to sell?

Weigh the repair estimate against what the car would bring running. On a sedan this old, a big repair often costs more than the car is worth.

  1. Look up open recalls. Put the VIN into NHTSA's recall search. If nobody had them done, the headlight module and steering shaft recalls say the repair is free of charge. The fleet wheel and axle notices say dealers will replace those parts.
  2. Ex-police or ex-taxi? Expect high miles and hard use. Price the repair against a running car with the same history, not against a retiree's low-mileage sedan.
  3. Parked for years? Old fuel, flat tires and dry seals add up quickly. Our guide to a car sitting for years walks through it.
  4. Want a sense of value? What a junk car is worth explains what moves an offer on an old car.

Selling the Crown Vic as it sits

  1. Gather the details: VIN, mileage, what doesn't work, and whether it was ever a police car or taxi.
  2. Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where it's parked. A back yard, a long gravel drive, a garage or a shop lot all work. Say if the tires are flat or the car won't roll, so the driver can plan the loading.
  4. Don't strip it. Converter, wheels and battery: all of it rides away on the car. If parts are already missing, tell us when you ask.
  5. When the truck arrives, hand over the title and show a photo ID. Lost the title? Start with junk car with no title. For plates and registration, see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Crown Victoria years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2003, with 327 as of October 10, 2026. The 1992 has 310, the 1997 has 289, the 1996 has 278 and the 1995 has 251. Wheels and headlights dominate the 2003 file; on the mid-1990s cars it is steering, suspension and the engine cooling system.
My 2003-2005 Crown Vic loses its headlights. Is that a known problem?
Yes. Recall 15V861 covers a lighting control module that can fail and leave the car without headlights on 296,004 Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis sedans built October 3, 2001 to August 2, 2005. Dealers replace the module at no cost, and a VIN search at nhtsa.gov/recalls shows whether yours is still open.
I bought a retired police Crown Victoria. Do the fleet recalls apply to it?
They can. Several recalls were written only for Police Interceptor, taxi or fleet cars: cracked steel wheels (03V279 and 07V079), rear axles and bearings (04V328), an insulating panel that could sag onto the exhaust (05V206) and lower ball joints (98V322). A VIN search shows whether any is still open on your car.
Will you buy a Crown Vic that has been parked for years and won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and a Crown Victoria that has sat in a yard or a garage is no exception. Let us know if the tires still hold air and if it rolls, so the right truck comes.
What is the steering shaft recall on 2005-2011 Crown Victorias?
Recall 13V385 covers corrosion of the lower intermediate steering shaft on 2005-2011 Crown Victorias, Grand Marquis and Town Cars registered now, or first sold, in the states the recall lists, mostly in the Northeast and Midwest. If the lower bearing comes apart, the driver can lose steering. Dealers replace the lower shaft for free. A follow-up recall, 14V704, covers the upper shaft on cars serviced under the first one.
