Selling a broken or junk Ford Edge
An Edge with a cooked engine, a dead transmission or a string of open recalls still sells as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. You don't strip anything first.

Do two checks before you decide. Look up open recalls on your VIN, since those repairs cost you nothing. And on a 2021-2022 Edge with the 2.7-liter, ask whether a Ford engine program still applies.
Four stages of the Edge
Every North American Edge came from Ford's Oakville Assembly plant in Ontario. The first ones were 2007 models, and the last rolled off the line on April 26, 2024, with no direct replacement. Every count on this page comes from NHTSA records we downloaded on October 10, 2026.
| Model years | Powertrain | NHTSA complaints / recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2007-2010 | 3.5 V6 rated 265 hp, 6F50 six-speed automatic, front or all-wheel drive | 3,043 / 9 |
| 2011-2014 | Facelift: 3.5 V6 up to 285 hp, new 3.7 V6 and 2.0 EcoBoost four | 5,765 / 8 |
| 2015-2018 | Second generation: 2.0 EcoBoost standard, 3.5 V6 or 2.7 twin-turbo V6, six-speed automatic | 3,855 / 13 |
| 2019-2024 | 8F35 eight-speed on every Edge; the ST used the 2.7 at 335 hp | 1,404 / 13 |
2007-2010: rusting fuel tanks, risky air bags
On all four early years, air bags are the system owners named most. That's 327 of 989 complaints for the 2007 and 432 of 1,120 for the 2008. Recall 16V384 (May 2016) replaces the passenger front inflator. NHTSA's notice says not to drive the car until that's done, since a burst inflator can throw metal at the people inside. At first it applied to Edges sold or registered in a list of warm-weather states, starting with Alabama, California and Florida. Ford's 2019 bulletin for safety recall 19S01 lists 2007-2010 Edges and says it "includes additional affected vehicles." Recall 21V158 (March 2021) swaps the driver's inflator. Dealers do both for free.
Rust is the other early problem, and it hits the fuel tank. Recall 14V682 (October 2014) covers 186,024 Edge and Lincoln MKX models from the 2007-2008 years, built June 15, 2006 to September 22, 2008. It applies to cars first sold or now registered in a list of states, mostly in the Northeast and Midwest. Recall 15V712 (October 2015) extends the same fix to 110,636 Edges and MKXs from 2009-2010. The dealer cleans and coats the tank, or fits a new one. The danger named in both notices is fuel leaking near something hot enough to light it. Across 2007-2010, 45 complaints report a fire.
2011-2014: the busiest complaint years
No Edge year drew more complaints than the 2013, at 2,446. The 2011 is next with 1,803. The electrical system tops both years (703 and 558 complaints), and service brakes come second (517 and 253). These numbers only tell you which system owners blamed, not the cause.
The recalls on this stage are smaller. Recall 10V659 fixed a body control module on 2011 models that could short and start a fire while the car sat parked. The biggest is 14V393 (July 2014), which reached 83,250 Ford and Lincoln vehicles of several models, 2012-2014 Edges among them. On these, the halfshaft and linkshaft can come apart. When that happens, the wheels get no power, and a parked Edge can roll away without the parking brake. Recall 20V692 later added a failing halfshaft support bracket on front-wheel-drive 2014 Edges.
2015-2018: coolant where it shouldn't be
Engine complaints climb with the second generation: 165 on the 2015, 309 on the 2016, 652 on the 2017 and 429 on the 2018. Of the 1,370 complaints on the 2017, 750 mention coolant. One reads, "Coolant intrusion into the number 3 cylinder." Ford's bulletin 19-2346 (December 2019) covers some 2015-2018 Edges with the 2.0 EcoBoost. It lists low coolant, white exhaust smoke or a rough-running engine, and says this "may be due to coolant intrusion into the cylinder." The fix it gives is a replacement long block. We did not find a Ford warranty program for this on the Edge.
Brakes and steering drew recalls as well. Front brake hoses can burst on 488,594 2015-2018 Edges and 2016-2018 MKXs (20V469, August 2020). The rear brake jounce hoses got their own recall on 2015-2018 Edges in August 2025 (25V544). Corroded bolts can let the power steering motor come loose on Edges built February 26-28, 2015 (15V250), and on 2015-2016 Edges in a similar group of states (19V632). Recall 22V413 covers a shifter cable bushing that can degrade or drop off, so the transmission may not land in the gear you picked.
2019-2024: eight speeds, then the end
Power train is the top complaint group for 2019 (420 of 770) and 2020 (171 of 323). The 2021-2022 Edges with the 2.7-liter Nano EcoBoost are part of recall 24V635 (August 2024), for intake valves that can break and cut drive power. Ford's program 24N12 adds engine coverage, but only for Edges built from May 10 through October 29, 2021 that went through the 24S55 inspection. In Ford's words: "This program provides a no-cost, one-time repair (if needed) for an engine long block replacement for vehicles that completed the 24S55 inspection process." A 2021-2022 rearview camera that can show a blank screen was fixed by software (22V151).
Complaints and recalls by model year
Edge numbers below were tallied from NHTSA's downloadable complaint and recall data on October 10, 2026. "Top system" is the component named most often in that year's complaints. We skip NHTSA's "unknown or other" group, so the 2014 shows its second-place system. A recall that covers several years counts once in each year.
| Model year | Complaints | Top system (complaints) | Recalls |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2007 | 989 | Air bags (327) | 5 |
| 2008 | 1,120 | Air bags (432) | 6 |
| 2009 | 261 | Air bags (131) | 6 |
| 2010 | 673 | Air bags (285) | 6 |
| 2011 | 1,803 | Electrical system (558) | 3 |
| 2012 | 1,134 | Electrical system (378) | 3 |
| 2013 | 2,446 | Electrical system (703) | 2 |

| 2015 | 727 | Engine (165) | 7 |
| 2016 | 920 | Engine (309) | 7 |
| 2017 | 1,370 | Engine (652) | 8 |
| 2018 | 838 | Engine (429) | 7 |
| 2019 | 770 | Power train (420) | 3 |
| 2020 | 323 | Power train (171) | 4 |

| 2022 | 132 | Power train (42) | 5 |
| 2023 | 23 | Electrical system and power train (4 each) | 4 |
| 2024 | 44 | Electrical system (7) | 2 |
Repair it or let it go?
Put the repair quote next to what the same Edge would sell for running. If the quote eats most of that number, selling it broken usually wins. Go in this order:
- Clear the free work. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall search. The air bag, fuel tank, brake hose, steering bolt and shifter bushing fixes are all done by Ford dealers at no charge.
- Losing coolant on a 2015-2018 2.0? Bulletin 19-2346 points to a new long block. Get that price on paper and compare it with a running Edge of the same year and mileage. The blown engine guide helps you weigh it.
- Broken valve on a 2021-2022 2.7? Ask the dealer whether your Edge had the 24S55 inspection and qualifies for 24N12 before you pay for anything.
- Not sure what it's worth broken? What a junk car is worth covers the factors that change an offer.
Getting an offer for the whole Edge
- Write down the VIN, the mileage and what's wrong. Also note whether it starts, rolls and steers.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it's parked. A driveway, a street, a parking lot or a repair shop all work. If a wheel is locked or a tire is flat, say so, and we'll send a truck that can load it.
- Keep it complete. Leave the catalytic converter, the wheels and the battery in place, and mention anything that's already been pulled.
- On pickup day, give the driver the signed title, any keys you have, and a look at your photo ID. Plate and registration rules vary by state; after you sell covers them.

Questions people ask
- Which Ford Edge years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2013 leads with 2,446 complaints. Then come the 2011 (1,803), the 2017 (1,370), the 2012 (1,134) and the 2008 (1,120). We took these totals from NHTSA on October 10, 2026. The newest Edges have had less time on the road, so their small totals say less.
- My 2015-2018 Edge with the 2.0 EcoBoost keeps losing coolant and smokes white. What is going on?
- Ford's service bulletin 19-2346 describes exactly that on some 2015-2018 Edges with the 2.0-liter engine: low coolant, white exhaust smoke or rough running, which it says may come from coolant getting into a cylinder. The repair it lists is a new long block engine. We found no Ford warranty extension for this on the Edge, so have a dealer check your VIN before you pay for an engine.
- Can I keep driving a 2007-2010 Edge with an open air bag recall?
- NHTSA's record for recall 16V384 tells owners not to drive until the passenger air bag inflator is replaced. A Ford dealer does that repair free. A separate recall, 21V158, replaces the driver's inflator. Both are free, and nhtsa.gov/recalls will tell you from the VIN whether either still needs doing on your Edge.
- Will you buy an Edge with a dead engine or a slipping transmission?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes an Edge that won't start or won't move. In your offer request, name the fault, say if it can roll and steer, and tell us where it sits.
- Does Ford still cover a 2021-2022 Edge with the 2.7-liter engine for broken valves?
- Maybe. Program 24N12 offers a one-time free long block, in Ford's words "for 10 years of service or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle, whichever occurs first," but only for Edges with an Oakville build date of May 10 to October 29, 2021 that went through the 24S55 valve inspection. Extra time for cars already past those limits ended June 30, 2026. A Ford dealer can tell you whether your VIN qualifies.
