Selling a Ford Focus that won't run
A Focus with a shuddering PowerShift, an engine that stalls while driving, or rust in the rear door latches can still go as one complete car. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and there is free pickup anywhere in the US. Nothing needs to come off it first.

On a 2012-2016 automatic, look at two things before you sell: Ford's transmission programs and any open recall on the VIN. Each one is laid out below, generation by generation.
Three generations, three different problem lists
This page covers the 2000-2018 Focus sold in North America. The numbers below come from NHTSA's public files as of October 10, 2026.
| Years | What Ford built | Where complaints cluster | Complaints / recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2000-2007 | Three- and five-door hatchbacks, a sedan and a wagon. 2.0 and 2.3 fours, 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual. Wayne, Mich., and Hermosillo, Mexico. | Electrical system, often the ignition. Fuel pump and stalling on the 2001. Rear door latch rust. | 8,819 / 13 |
| 2008-2011 | Coupe and sedan only. One engine, a 140 hp 2.0 Duratec. Built at Wayne. | Nothing stands out. | 879 / 1 |
| 2012-2018 | Global design with a 160 hp direct-injected 2.0, the PowerShift dual-clutch automatic or a manual. ST, RS, 1.0 EcoBoost and the Focus Electric. | Power train every year, led by clutch shudder. Power steering on the 2012. | 12,607 / 27 |
NHTSA also files 11 complaints under a 1999 model year, which the Focus never had. They are part of the 22,316 total.
2000-2007: ignition complaints and a pile of early recalls
The 2000 is the second-busiest year in the file: 3,686 complaints and 11 recall campaigns. Electrical trouble leads. Counting every complaint with an electrical record, the 2000 has 1,370, and 1,008 of them mention the ignition. The 2003 runs even higher, 458 of 523. The file doesn't give a cause, and no Focus recall from those years targets the ignition.
The 2001's weak spot was fuel delivery. Of its 297 fuel-system complaints, 239 mention the pump, the filter or stalling. Recall 03V482 dealt with a filter inside the 2000-2001 fuel delivery module that could clog until the engine stalled. Ford offered the free part for 10 years after the original sale, so that door has closed.
Other early recalls fixed Zetec battery cables with loose attachments or bad routing, which could damage the insulation and lead to smoke or fire (02V288), loose pinch bolts at the lower control arms (02V289), and rear hub nuts on the 2000 that could let the left rear wheel separate (00V303).
Rust gets the four- and five-door cars. Recall 05V030 covers 2000-2005 cars sold or registered in 20 northern states and DC, where corrosion at the rear door latch could let a door swing open while moving. Ford's 2016 bulletin 16-0067 pointed dealers to that campaign, Ford's 05S27, for cars built on or before January 26, 2005.
2008-2011: a short, quiet run
The restyled Focus came only as a coupe or sedan. Its four model years hold 879 complaints between them and one recall campaign. If yours is from this stretch, the file shows no pattern to blame.
2012-2018: the PowerShift years
The third generation launched here with one engine and, on automatics, the six-speed PowerShift dual-clutch. The 2012 holds the record for the model with 3,802 complaints, and power train tops the list on every year through 2018.
Of 10,867 complaints on the 2012-2016 cars, 5,436 list a power-train component. Among those, 1,205 mention shudder or judder and 1,974 mention the clutch. Ford's own bulletin says these cars "may exhibit excessive transmission clutch shudder on light acceleration." A second bulletin adds loss of engagement while driving, intermittent no-starts and loss of power.
Ford answered with warranty programs, not a safety recall:
- 14M01: 2012-2014 Focus built at Michigan Assembly from August 1, 2010 through June 5, 2013. Input shaft seals, clutch and software to seven years or 100,000 miles. Ford's notice says the problems "may be due to fluid contamination of the clutch caused by leaking input shaft seals."
- 19N08, August 2019: 2014-2016 Focus. The clutch to seven years or 100,000 miles, and cars already past those limits got coverage through February 10, 2020.
- 14M02, supplement 7, May 2023: 2012-2016 Focus with the DPS6. The control module is covered for "10 years of service or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle, whichever occurs first."
TFLcar reported in March 2020 that a federal judge approved a class settlement over the PowerShift.
Three more things turn up on these cars:
- Steering on the 2012. Of 933 steering complaints, 721 mention power steering or assist. No Focus recall covers that. A separate campaign, 14V514, swapped wrongly assembled steering gears on 508 cars, Focus and C-Max alike, built between August 8 and 15, 2014, and NHTSA's data marks it do-not-drive.
- Stalling. Recall 18V735 reached 1,282,596 Focus cars from 2012-2018 with a 2.0 engine. A failed canister purge valve can stall the engine "without the ability to restart the vehicle." Ford recalled cars again in 2019 (19V515) and June 2026 (26V369) because the first repair wasn't done right on some.
- Late-model engine items. An oil pump belt or tensioner that can fail on 2016-2018 cars (23V905), clutch fractures on 1.0 EcoBoost manuals (18V845, redone as 26V376), and a 2026 block heater recall on 2013-2018 2.0 cars (26V011).
Door latches on 2012-2015 cars can break so a door won't stay shut (16V643, reopened as 20V331). The Focus Electric, built on the same Wayne line until May 2018, has its own recalls for a stall-like loss of power (13V523) and a pinion shaft that can fracture (16V479).
In April 2018 Ford said it would drop every car it sold in North America except the Mustang and a compact Focus crossover. The 2018 is the last Focus year in NHTSA's complaint file.
Focus complaints and recalls by model year
Quiet stretches are grouped. A grouped row counts each recall campaign once, but a campaign covering years in two rows appears in both. The top area leaves out NHTSA's "unknown or other" bucket. The 11 complaints filed under 1999 are not in the table. Top-area figures come from the first record filed on each complaint; the text counts every record, so its numbers are larger.
| Model years | Complaints | Recall campaigns | Top complaint area |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2000 | 3,686 | 11 | Electrical system (1,200) |
| 2001 | 1,761 | 7 | Electrical system (425) |
| 2002-2006 | 2,981 | 2 | Electrical system, every year (1,036) |
| 2007 | 391 | 0 | Air bags (114) |
| 2008-2011 | 879 | 1 | Electrical system; power train on the 2010 |
| 2012 | 3,802 | 10 | Power train (1,177) |
| 2013 | 2,181 | 14 | Power train (884) |
| 2014 | 2,658 | 14 | Power train (1,298) |
| 2015 | 1,033 | 11 | Power train (486) |
| 2016 | 1,193 | 11 | Power train (566) |
| 2017 | 905 | 10 | Power train (383) |
| 2018 | 835 | 7 | Power train (252) |
Worth fixing, or time to sell?
- Start with the VIN. NHTSA's lookup lists open campaigns. The 2026 notices for the purge valve (26V369) and the block heater (26V011) both list the dealer repair as free.
- Automatic shudders or won't engage? Ask the dealer whether 14M02 still covers the control module on your car. A worn clutch is most likely outside coverage now, so get any quote on paper.
- Hold the quote up against the car. Find what a running Focus of your year and mileage sells for. A quote above that figure means the bill tops what the repaired Focus could sell for. The bad transmission guide walks through the symptoms.
- Engine stall on a 2016-2018? Check recall 23V905. An oil pump belt or tensioner can fail, and the lost oil pressure "can result in an engine stall and a loss of power braking assist." Dealers replace both parts free.
Getting the Focus picked up whole
- Write down the VIN, the miles, whether it's a manual or the automatic, and what it does when you turn the key.
- Ask for an offer on this page, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Name the place it sits, say a curb, a carport or a mechanic's lot, and say if it rolls in neutral.
- Keep it complete. The battery, wheels and converter should all still be on it. If something is already gone, mention it, since it changes the offer.
- When the driver arrives, give them the signed title and the keys you have. Plate rules vary by state, and after you sell lists them.
If the car won't start at all, that's fine too. Comparing Fords? See the Fiesta, the Escort, the C-Max or every Ford we cover.
Questions people ask
- Which Focus model years have the most complaints?
- The 2012 leads with 3,802 complaints filed with NHTSA. Behind it come the 2000 (3,686), the 2014 (2,658) and the 2013 (2,181). On every year from 2012 to 2018 the top complaint area is the power train. From 2000 to 2006 it is the electrical system.
- Does Ford still cover the PowerShift on my 2012-2016 Focus?
- The clutch coverage is probably over. Programs 14M01 and 19N08 ran the clutch to seven years or 100,000 miles, and almost every car is past seven years now. Program 14M02 is longer: it covers the transmission control module for a decade or 150,000 miles, counted from the day the warranty began. A 2015 or 2016 first sold after October 2016 could still qualify, and a Ford service desk can run the VIN to see.
- My Focus stalled and won't restart. Could that be a recall?
- Yes, on a 2012-2018 car with the 2.0 engine. Recall 18V735 covers a canister purge valve that can stall the engine with no restart. Ford had to recall that repair twice more, in 2019 (19V515) and in June 2026 (26V369), so a car that already had it done may need it again. The 2026 recall's software update is free at the dealer.
- Why does a 2026 recall tell Focus owners to leave the block heater unplugged?
- Recall 26V011 covers 2013-2018 Focus cars with the 2.0 engine. The block heater can crack, leak coolant and short out when it's plugged in. Until a dealer does the repair, NHTSA's notice says owners should not plug it in.
- Will you take a Focus with a clutch so worn it can't be driven?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. When you ask for an offer, mention that it won't drive and whether it rolls.
