Selling a junk or broken-down Ford Windstar

A Windstar with a blown head gasket, a cracked rear axle or a rotted subframe can still be sold. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and the pickup is free anywhere in the US. Nothing has to be fixed or taken off first.

Ford built every Windstar in Oakville, Ontario, for the 1995 through 2003 model years. On the early vans, owner reports keep coming back to the engine. On the later ones, the worry is a rear axle and subframe mounts that rust and crack.

Two Windstars, two kinds of trouble

On October 10, 2026 we pulled NHTSA's Windstar complaint and recall files. Both tables count complaints owners filed and Ford's vehicle recall campaigns.

Six campaigns reach vans from both generations, so the rows add up to more than the 33 on file.

1995-1998: head gaskets first

The 1995 is the worst year in the file, with 3,326 complaints, and 1,430 of them list the engine and its cooling. In NHTSA's online lookup, 1,100 of 3,343 complaints on the 1995 mention a head gasket. On the 1996 it is 289 of 1,404. Owners write of engines that overheated once the gasket let go. The records rarely say which V6 it was, and we found no Ford warranty extension for it.

The transmission is the other sore spot: 658 complaints on the 1995 bring it up. Ford recalled 1996 vans twice over the park pawl, the part that locks the gearbox in Park. One recall was for a roll pin set wrong (96V086), the other for a bracket with a sharp edge (96V166). Either could let the van move with the lever in Park. Recall 97V097 covered 1997-1998 vans whose AX4S servo cover could come off, and NHTSA's notice warns that the leaking fluid could catch fire on a hot catalytic converter.

Rust found the early vans too. Recall 01V199 put shields around front coil springs that could break from corrosion on 1997-1998 vans in salt-belt states; some tires went flat after rubbing a broken spring. Recall 02V101 dealt with brake lines on 1995-1996 vans that were installed twisted and could corrode through and leak.

1999-2003: the rear axle and the subframe

NHTSA opened investigation PE10-016 in May 2010 into rear axle fractures on 914,789 Windstars from 1998 to 2003. It knew of 891 cracking complaints. In 334 the axle had broken clean through, with 8 crashes and 3 injuries. Ford told the agency that years of road salt can weaken the stamped axle. Ninety-six percent of the complaints, and every full break, came from the states in Ford's recall.

Ford's fix came in stages:

  • 10V385 (August 2010): 492,650 vans built September 1, 1997 to February 28, 2003 and sold or registered in salt-belt states. Dealers inspect the axle and bolt on reinforcement brackets.
  • 12V193 and 12V195 (May 2012): Virginia (27,000 vans) and Puerto Rico (9,192) were added. For Puerto Rico the recall cites "high cycles of torsional loading, specific to this market."
  • 15V608 (September 2015): 283,413 vans whose brackets may have gone on wrong. Dealers check each one and replace the axle when a bracket was misinstalled.

Owner reports match. On the 2000, 377 of 1,675 complaints mention an axle; on the 2001 it is 403 of 1,717. One 2001 owner wrote that the axle cracked right at the bracket a recall had added.

Up front, recall 11V030 (January 2011) covers 425,288 vans from 1999 to 2003 in salt-belt states. The rear mounting brackets of the front lower control arms and the rear body mounts of the front subframe can rust through, and steering control can suffer. Dealers repair them, and the notice says that when a repair can't be made, Ford "will offer to repurchase the vehicle." Recall 12V194 added Virginia (23,000 vans) in 2012.

Every year: the cruise control switch

Recall 09V399 (October 2009) covers Windstars from all nine model years. The speed control deactivation switch can leak inside, and NHTSA's notice says a fire "could occur with or without the engine running." Dealers fit a fused wiring harness, and on 1999-2003 vans with a leaking switch they also inspect the ABS module connector. Automotive Fleet counted 1.1 million Windstars in that 4.5-million-vehicle campaign.

ABS complaints stand out on their own. On the 2002, 659 of 1,396 complaints in the online lookup mention the ABS, most of them a warning light that stays on.

The nine Windstar years total 14,083 complaints. NHTSA also holds 23 complaints filed under 1994 and 24 under 2004, years with no Windstar, and they are left out. The online lookup counts some years a little differently, which is why figures quoted from it above (3,343 for the 1995, for example) don't match this table.

Fix it or sell it?

  1. Run the VIN before anything else at nhtsa.gov/recalls. An open axle, subframe or cruise switch recall is dealer work you may not have to pay for.
  2. Look underneath. Axle cracks (1998-2003) and rotted front subframe mounts (1999-2003) are both recall items. Ask a Ford dealer what the campaign still covers, including the repurchase line in 11V030.
  3. Overheating on a 1995-1996? A failed head gasket fits the pattern in the file. Our blown engine guide walks through how to weigh that repair.
  4. Weigh the quote. Get it in writing, then check local listings for a Windstar of that year that runs. When the repair eats most of that number, selling the van as it sits is the simpler path.

Selling the van as it sits

  1. Write down the basics: the VIN from the dash or door jamb, the mileage, and what stopped working.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the spot: a driveway, the curb, a shop lot. Mention whether it rolls, whether the rear axle has broken, and whether all four wheels are on.
  4. Leave the parts where they are. Don't pull the catalytic converter, battery or wheels. If something is already gone, tell us before the pickup.
  5. Hand over the title at pickup, along with a photo ID and any keys. Plate and registration rules differ by state; after you sell lists them.

Lost the title? Start with selling without a title. Other Ford vans: the Freestar and Aerostar, or every Ford we cover.

Questions people ask

Which Windstar years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1995 by a wide margin: 3,326 complaints filed with NHTSA. The engine and its cooling system are the biggest single group, named in 1,430. Next are the 2001 (1,686), the 2000 (1,675) and the 1999 (1,522). The 1997 has only 192.
Does the rear axle recall still cover my Windstar?
It may. Recall 10V385 takes in 1998-2003 vans built between September 1, 1997 and February 28, 2003 that were sold or registered in salt-belt states, and two 2012 recalls added Virginia and Puerto Rico. Put the VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls, then ask a Ford dealer whether the brackets were fitted and whether they went on right, which is what recall 15V608 checks.
Did Ford extend the warranty for 1995-1996 head gaskets?
We found no extension in NHTSA or Ford records, and none of the 33 Windstar recalls touches the gasket. The complaints are real all the same: 1,100 of them on the 1995 alone name a head gasket.
Will you take a Windstar whose rear axle snapped?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. Say the axle has broken and the van won't roll, because a van that can't roll needs different loading gear. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
Should I pull the engine or transmission and sell them on their own?
There's no need. You sell the whole car as it sits, with the drivetrain, wheels and catalytic converter left on. Anything already pulled off should be listed in your request.
