Junk cars in Calhoun and how to sell one
Calhoun has two clocks for a dead car, and the shorter one is 30 days. Section 58-34 lists among prohibited conditions "the unsheltered storage of old, unused, stripped, junked and other automobiles not in good and safe operating condition" when it lasts "for a period of 30 days or more on private property within the city" and the setting is otherwise unsafe or unsanitary.

The 60-day test, and the six-car line
The longer clock is in Section 22-312, among the city's rules for junk and salvage businesses. It describes "A motor vehicle that is either physically inoperable, or missing essential parts to be operable, and has been stored in the same geographic location for no less than 60 days." A car that "lacks a current license plate and is not stored within a completely enclosed structure" fits that description with no wait at all.
The same section defines "A facility where more than five abandoned motor vehicles are located or stored for a period in excess of 60 consecutive days." If dead cars have piled up on a family property, the count matters: past five, the land starts to look like a facility under the code. Our page on selling several junk cars covers clearing them together.
Parking a dead car on Calhoun streets
- Public spaces. Section 90-116 says any vehicle in public parking "shall have current registration, valid insurance and shall be in operable condition." Leaving one in the same space for more than 24 consecutive hours counts as storage. Repairs in the space are barred too, except limited fixes after a sudden emergency. Violations can bring impoundment, a fine, and towing and storage fees.
- Neighborhood streets. In R-1, R-1A and R-1B zones, Section 90-119 limits curbside parking to "not more than 12 consecutive hours per calendar day." It also bars parking in a cul-de-sac, within 50 feet of an intersection, facing oncoming traffic or opposite a driveway.
The sections quoted here say nothing about how a tow company must notify you. Calhoun may have its own rules on that.
The Gordon County tag office
We checked Gordon County's tag office at 215 North Wall Street, phone (706) 629-9242. It is about 1 mile west of Calhoun's center as the crow flies, and Gordon may have other offices. The curbside spaces along North Wall Street fall inside the downtown limited parking area of Section 90-113, so mind the posted time limits during the daytime hours that section sets, Sundays and holidays aside.
At the counter or online, a Georgia sale is two tasks. First, a Calhoun seller signs the title over: name printed and signed in the Seller block on the reverse, a co-owner's too, odometer in whole miles, nothing erased. Second, the Gordon registration is cancelled through the DRIVES e-Services site or an MV-18J form, ahead of any call to the insurer. The plate stays yours. Gordon charges $8.00 for a replacement title on Form MV-1.
Gordon is not one of the 13 counties in Georgia's emissions program, so a car from Calhoun doesn't need a test before it is sold.

Questions people ask
- How long can a junked car sit uncovered in Calhoun?
- Section 58-34 lists "the unsheltered storage of old, unused, stripped, junked and other automobiles not in good and safe operating condition" lasting "for a period of 30 days or more on private property within the city" as a prohibited condition, where the setting is also unsafe or unsanitary.
- I have six dead cars on my land. Does that matter?
- It can. Section 22-312 describes a facility where more than five abandoned motor vehicles are stored for over 60 consecutive days, and that definition sits among the city's rules for junk and salvage businesses.
- Is a downtown Calhoun parking space a place to leave a broken car?
