Junk and dead cars in Snellville
If a wrecker hauls your car from a crash in Snellville, you get a say in where it goes. Section 58-108 says "any wrecker service vehicle operator receiving a request from a vehicle owner to tow the vehicle to a location other than the wrecker service's impound lot, must comply with this request." That holds unless police direct otherwise. The other place must be willing to take the car, and the tow is paid when it gets there unless you work out other terms.

What Snellville calls junk
The city's definitions, in Section 102-2, cast a wide net. The term covers a vehicle or trailer "which is wrecked, dismantled, partially dismantled, stripped, partially stripped, inoperative, abandoned, discarded, or kept parked, stored or maintained on any premises or public right-of-way without a current license plate and/or decal displayed on the vehicle." It even reaches a "contrivance or part thereof," so a pile of parts counts.
The sections quoted here set no clock for a car at home. Georgia's manual is the fallback. In Snellville, a car is abandoned once it's been left 30 days on someone else's private land, or five days on public property when the owner looks to have walked away. Snellville may have its own rules beyond these.
After a crash or a tow
- Reporting. Unless the police or the Gwinnett County radio dispatcher sent it, a wrecker must report any removal at once to the Snellville Police Department Dispatch Center.
- Care. Operators must sweep up glass and debris, soak up spilled fluids, and use proper equipment such as wheel lifts so the car takes no further damage.
- Your tow is not an impound. Under Section 58-75, "If a driver or owner requests that a vehicle be towed, such towing does not constitute an impoundment." A police impound brings an inventory form signed by the officer and the wrecker driver, and release happens on a police department form.
Hotels and extended stays
At hotels, motels and extended-stay hotels, Section 22-119 is blunt: "No outside storage or permanent parking of equipment or vehicles shall be allowed." Guests staying past 48 hours must register any car they park there. A car that died in an extended-stay lot can't stay there indefinitely.
Gwinnett County: tag office and emissions
Snellville drivers in Gwinnett handle titles at a county tag office. The one we checked is at number 750 on South Perry Street in Lawrenceville (phone 770-822-8818). In a direct line on the map, it sits about 6 miles north of central Snellville. Gwinnett may run other offices.
Gwinnett belongs to Georgia's emissions program. Renewing there in 2026 means a test for gas cars and light trucks from 2002-2023, though the three newest model years are left out. Anyone who just moved to Snellville has 30 days to test and register. A car that can't pass ends up without a current decal, and then it fits the 102-2 definition.
Selling has two steps in Georgia. Start on the back of the Snellville title: you and any co-owner each print and sign under Seller, and the mileage goes in as a whole number. Next, Snellville sellers end the Gwinnett registration online through DRIVES e-Services or on Form MV-18J. Drop the insurance only once that is done. Take the plate with you. Gwinnett charges $8.00 to replace a missing title through Form MV-1.

Questions people ask
- After a wreck in Snellville, can I tell the tow truck where to take my car?
- Yes, unless law enforcement directs otherwise. Section 58-108 says an operator asked by the owner to tow to a place other than the wrecker's impound lot must comply. The other place has to accept the car, and the towing charge is paid on delivery unless you arrange something else with the operator.
- Does a car with an expired decal count as junk in Snellville?
- Section 102-2's definition reaches a vehicle "kept parked, stored or maintained on any premises or public right-of-way without a current license plate and/or decal displayed on the vehicle."
- Can I leave a dead car at an extended-stay hotel in Snellville?
- Section 22-119 says no outside storage or permanent parking of equipment or vehicles is allowed at hotels, motels and extended-stay hotels, and guests staying longer than 48 hours must register their vehicle.
