Selling a junk car in Suwanee

Suwanee's code lets a missing tag speak for the car. Under Section 34-82, "The absence of a license plate for the current year and/or the absence of a current motor vehicle registration shall be prima facie evidence that such vehicle is junked." So a car with no current tag or registration starts out looking like junk under the code. If that describes yours, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Thirty days outside

Section 34-86 makes it a nuisance to keep "old, unused, stripped, junked and other automobiles not in good and safe operating condition" in unsheltered storage "for a period of 30 days or more," anywhere in the city except licensed junkyards. The same rule covers machinery, equipment and other property no longer safely usable.

Responsibility is shared. The owner, tenant, lessee or occupant of the lot, and the owner of the stored car, are all on the hook "jointly and severally." The fix the code names is moving the car into a completely enclosed building authorized for storage.

Ten days after a written notice

In Suwanee, Section 34-173 says an abandoned, junked or discarded car "shall be removed upon ten days' written notice." That notice is sent to the property owner or occupant, or to the car's owner when the plate or other records show who it is.

When ten days pass and the car has not moved, city police take it away, or have someone tow and sell it. The cost falls on the property owner or occupant, or on the car's owner if known.

Street and park limits

Section 54-72 sets short clocks for big vehicles on public streets:

  • a bus or truck over one-half ton capacity: no longer than one hour
  • a truck camper, motor home, boat, RV or trailer: no more than 12 hours

A vehicle in violation for 24 hours or more "shall be presumed to be abandoned and may be impounded." In city recreation facilities, Section 42-43 lets the city tow a car left after closing, at the owner's expense.

When to cancel the registration

Georgia puts the Suwanee seller in charge of ending the tag. Use Form MV-18J or go online at DRIVES e-Services. In Suwanee, timing matters. A car still parked outside with no current registration is presumed junked under Section 34-82, so cancel when the car leaves, not weeks before. Cancel the registration first and the insurance second.

Gwinnett County title office

For Gwinnett title work, we looked at the tax commissioner's site on 750 South Perry Street, Lawrenceville (770-822-8818). That office is roughly 8 miles southeast of central Suwanee on a map. Gwinnett may run other locations too.

Sign the back of the original title in the Seller block, printed name included, and fill in the mileage to the whole mile. Co-owners print and sign as well. You keep the plate. The buyer gets 7 days to put the car in their name and register it. Gwinnett sits inside the metro Atlanta emissions area; testing covers 2002-2023 gasoline cars and light trucks of 8,500 pounds GVWR or less for 2026 registration.

Questions people ask

Is a car without a current plate junked in Suwanee?
Under Section 34-82, a car with no plate for this year, or with no current registration, is prima facie evidence of a junked vehicle.
Does Suwanee limit how long a dead car stays outdoors?
Unsheltered storage of an automobile not in good and safe operating condition becomes a nuisance at 30 days or more, outside licensed junkyards. Moving it into a completely enclosed building authorized for storage abates it.
What happens after the city sends a written notice?
Under Section 34-173 the car must be removed within ten days. If not, police take it away or have it towed and sold. Suwanee mails that bill to the property's owner or resident, or else to the car's owner.
Can I leave my camper or work truck on a Suwanee street?
A truck or bus over one-half ton may stay no longer than one hour, and a camper, motor home, boat or trailer no more than 12 hours. A vehicle in violation for 24 hours or more is presumed abandoned and may be impounded.
