A broken Honda Pilot: what fails, what Honda still covers, and how to sell it

A Pilot with a seized engine, a nine-speed that won't behave or a rotting rear subframe still sells whole. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Check one thing first: whether Honda owes you the repair. Several Pilot programs run 10 years, and a 2026 rust recall is still waiting on its final fix.

Four generations at a glance

These numbers come from NHTSA's complaint and recall files, pulled October 10, 2026. A recall that covers years on both sides of a redesign is counted for each generation.

2016-2022: where most complaints sit

The 2016 has 1,710 complaints, more than any other Pilot, and 585 of them name the engine. The 2017 adds 930, with 343 about the engine. Two recalls describe engine damage outright. Recall 23V751 says a manufacturing error can wear and seize the connecting rod bearing on 2016 and 2018-2019 Pilots; dealers inspect the engine, then repair or replace it. On 2018-2019 Pilots, recall 19V298 covers timing belt teeth that can separate and stall the engine.

The nine-speed has its own problem. Some 2016 transmission warmers were built wrong and let engine coolant mix with the fluid. Honda warns that can ruin both the engine and the transmission. For 2016s outside its two product update campaigns, it gave the warmer a decade of coverage from the first sale, with mileage unlimited, so a 2016 sold new is reaching that line about now.

Honda added more long coverage on these years:

  • Check engine light, 2016-2017: software and fuel injector repairs for catalyst, misfire or air-fuel codes, to 10 years or 150,000 miles.
  • V6 fuel injectors, 2016-2019: 10 years or 150,000 miles.
  • Torque converter, 2017-2018 six-speed cars: 8 years or 150,000 miles in Honda's August 2023 notice; a dealer can confirm today's terms from the VIN. Honda's stated cause is a cracked lock-up piston that sets code P0741.
  • Idle stop that won't restart, 2016-2022 nine-speed cars: valve adjustment and a new starter for a decade, no mileage cap.
  • Start button, 2016-2017: 9 years or 125,000 miles after a "Keyless Start System Error".

The rust recall. Recall 26V365, filed in June 2026, reaches 2016-2022 Pilots sold in 22 states and DC, mostly across the Midwest and Northeast. The recall report says the rear subframe "may corrode at the suspension mounting points", and a failed rear control arm can cost the driver control. Dealers inspect the subframe and bolt on a reinforcement kit. The recall report says interim letters "were mailed July 27, 2026" and puts the final remedy in "the fall of 2026". The 2016-2019 Pilot also had a hood latch striker recall (21V932) for a hood that can open while driving.

2003-2008: transmissions and air bags

Power train complaints lead the 2003, 2004 and 2005: 203, 131 and 144. Recall 04V176 fixed heat between the second gears that could chip teeth and lock the transmission on 2003-2004 Pilots. The Center for Auto Safety says five-speeds built in Russells Point, Ohio, went into some 2003 and early 2004 Pilots, and a California settlement class later named 2003-2004 Pilots. Recall 12V573 replaces an ignition interlock lever on 2003-2004 Pilots that can let the key out of Park, so the SUV can roll away. On the 2005, a damaged stability-control capacitor could hit the brakes without warning, often with no brake lights (13V092).

Air bags are the other thread. The Pilot file holds 20 campaigns with an air bag component, most of them inflator recalls on 2003-2012 Pilots. Recall 15V320 swaps driver inflators on 2003-2008 Pilots. Recall 16V344 replaces passenger inflators on 2003-2008 Pilots first sold, or ever registered, in places that include Alabama, California, Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico. NHTSA's February 2023 Do Not Drive alert names the 2003 Pilot among vehicles with Takata Alpha driver inflators.

2009-2015: fewer complaints, two safety fixes

Lap-belt stitching on 2009-2011 Pilots may be incomplete, so the belt can come loose (11V468). Rivets that hold the driver air bag to its cover may be missing on 2009-2013 cars (13V016). On 2013-2015 Pilots, Honda's June 2025 extension covers misfires caused by worn piston rings and oil sludge fouling the plugs, to 10 years or 150,000 miles. Its any-age, any-mileage window closed January 31, 2026.

2023-2026: recent recalls

A loose ball bearing in the steering gear of 519 Pilots from 2023-2024 (23V735). Fuel injection software that can stall the engine on 2023-2025 (25V031). A brake pedal pivot pin that wasn't secured (25V391). A filler neck that can separate and leak fuel (24V900). Rear subframe bolts on 3,933 2026 Pilots and Passports that may not have been tightened right (26V424).

Pilot complaints and recalls by model year

As of October 10, 2026. Campaigns often span model years, which is why that column totals more than 62. The median mileage is the middle odometer reading across that year's complaints. "Top system" leaves out NHTSA's unknown-or-other bucket.

Is it worth fixing?

Start with the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, then have a Honda dealer check it for extensions, which that lookup doesn't list. Then match the symptom:

  • Engine seized or knocking on a 2016 or 2018-2019: recall 23V751 comes before any quote. Our blown engine guide covers the rest.
  • Milky fluid or coolant loss on a 2016 nine-speed: the warmer coverage above.
  • Rear rust on a 2016-2022 from the listed states: ask a dealer for the 26V365 inspection first.
  • Harsh or failed shifts on an older Pilot: see bad transmission.

If nothing covers it, set the written quote against what a running Pilot of the same year and mileage brings. What a junk car is worth explains what moves an offer on a non-runner.

Selling a Pilot as it sits

Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008. Have the year, trim, mileage and VIN handy, and say plainly what's wrong. Tell us where the Pilot is parked, whether that's a driveway, a curb or a repair shop's lot. A three-row SUV is heavy, so mention flat tires, a locked steering wheel or a missing key when you ask. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Keep it whole. If the catalytic converters, wheels or battery have already been taken, say so up front. The title and keys go with the SUV. Your state's plate and insurance steps are in after you sell. Weighing other Hondas? See the Passport, Odyssey and Ridgeline.

Questions people ask

Which Honda Pilot years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2016, with 1,710 complaints through October 10, 2026. Then the 2017 (930), the 2019 (909), the 2003 (720) and the 2005 (679). On the 2016 and 2017 the engine draws more complaints than any other system; on the 2003-2005 it's the power train.
Is my Pilot in the rear subframe corrosion recall?
Recall 26V365 covers 2016-2022 Pilots sold in 22 states and DC, among them Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Put the VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls to be sure. The first owner letters went out in late July 2026; Honda will write again when the permanent repair can be done, which it expected that autumn.
My 2016 Pilot has coolant mixed into the transmission fluid. Will Honda pay?
Maybe. Honda found that some 2016 nine-speed transmission warmers were made wrong and let coolant and fluid mix. For cars outside its two product updates, the warmer is covered "to 10 years from the original date of purchase with unlimited mileage." A 2016 bought new reaches that mark in 2025 or 2026, so ask a dealer soon.
What do I do with a 2003 Pilot flagged Do Not Drive?
Don't drive it, not even to a buyer. Mention the open recall when you request an offer; pickup is free anywhere in the US, so it leaves on a truck, never under its own power. NHTSA's February 2023 alert lists the 2003 Pilot among vehicles with Takata Alpha driver inflators that should not be driven until repaired. If you'd rather keep it, the inflator replacement is free at a Honda dealer.
