Selling a dead or junk car in Glenview
Glenview allows one unregistered car per property, not two. Section 90-361 says "Not more than one currently unregistered or unlicensed vehicle shall be kept, parked or stored on any premises at any time," with exceptions written into that definition. So a household with a dead project car and a second car whose plates lapsed is already over the line. If one of them has to go, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

When a Glenview car becomes a nuisance
Glenview's Section 90-364 has one line: "Inoperable motor vehicles, whether on public or private property, are hereby declared to be a nuisance." Section 90-361 explains the term. The car's engine, wheels or other parts are taken off or damaged "for a period of at least 14 days," so it "is incapable of being driven under its own motor power." A licensed wrecking or junking business is the one exemption. A car left anywhere for 14 days or more in a way that makes it look abandoned meets a separate definition.
Section 90-365 then requires you to dispose of the car "upon written notice received from the corporate authorities or the chief of police." The passage we read does not give a number of days after that notice, so treat the notice as the deadline.
Twelve hours on the street
The street rule is shorter. Under 90-363, "No person shall leave, for a period of more than 12 hours, on any street or highway in the Village, any vehicle which is in such a state of disrepair as to be incapable of being driven under its own motor power." Section 90-366 lets police remove such a car, or any car that appears lost, stolen or unclaimed, and impound it under state law. That statute sends an unclaimed Glenview car of 7 model years or less to public auction 30 days after notice. In Glenview, an older one has to be kept at least 10 days before it can be junked or salvaged.
Winter nights
From December 1 through March 31, section 90-195 bans street parking from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. Residents with no off-street space can get a free sticker permit, and nonresidents can call the police dispatcher for verbal permission. If a car won't start, it can't get off the street before 2 a.m., so a breakdown in winter quickly becomes a ticket.
Signing over the title
Glenview residents deal with the Illinois Secretary of State for titles, not Cook County. Glenview owners can walk into a Secretary of State facility or send the application to Springfield. At the handoff:
- In the Glenview title's Assignment of Title, all sellers and buyers print and sign their names, and someone completes the odometer certification. For a car titled to two people, or one from an estate, that means every name on the front signs. See inherited car.
- The state's seller steps list no notary.
- Keep your plates. The buyer cannot drive on them.
- Send the Glenview car's Seller's Report of Sale (VSD 703) off to Springfield promptly. It releases your responsibility but does not move ownership.
- Write the date and the price on a Glenview bill of sale.
If you are clearing out more than one car to get under the one-car limit, several junk cars covers doing it in one go.

Questions people ask
- How many cars without registration can I keep at my house in Glenview?
- Section 90-361 says not more than one currently unregistered or unlicensed vehicle may be kept, parked or stored on any premises at any time, except as that definition allows.
- Is a dead car allowed on a Glenview street, and what's the time limit?
- Twelve hours. Section 90-363 bars a vehicle that can't move on its own power from staying on any street or highway in the Village for more than 12 hours.
- What happens to a car Glenview police remove?
- Section 90-366 holds it in impound until someone lawfully claims it, or until it is disposed of as state law allows, 625 ILCS 5/4-201 through 4-213. That means a Glenview car no more than 7 model years old, if nobody claims it, is auctioned 30 days after notice. An older car can be disposed of once it has been held at least 10 days.
- Do both owners have to sign when a co-owned Illinois car is sold?
- Yes. For a Glenview sale, the Secretary of State says state and federal law require all sellers and buyers to sign and print names on the Assignment of Title and complete the odometer certification.
