Selling a junk or unregistered car in Round Lake Beach
In Round Lake Beach, even a car that works can get you in trouble. Expired registration is enough. The property maintenance code, Section 8-1-1-8, says "no currently unregistered or inoperable motor vehicle, trailer or camper shall be parked, kept, or stored outside of a structure on any premises." So a car that still starts, with stickers that ran out, can be a violation on its own driveway. If it is not worth fixing or re-registering, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Three limits packed into one section
Section 8-1-1-8 does more than ban outside storage. It also says:
- no vehicle may "at any time be in a state of major disassembly, disrepair, or in the process of being stripped or dismantled or used for storage"
- it is unlawful "to park any motor vehicle anywhere other than approved off-street parking," which rules out the lawn and the side yard
Then comes the clock. The code official may remove "any unregistered or inoperable motor vehicles or parts thereof from any public or private property and in view of the general public after seven days from the issuance of a written notice to the owners thereof to remove."
Pulling parts at home
Section 6-1-1 lists an "abandoned or inoperative vehicle or parts thereof" among the things exterior property must be kept clear of. It adds that no vehicle may remain stripped or dismantled "except when confined within a closed garage." If the village declares a public nuisance and nothing is done, it can fix the problem and bill the owner. Section 5-10(A)-1 separately calls every inoperable car in public view a nuisance. If you are weighing a teardown in the garage, read part it out or sell it whole first.
For rented homes, the same property maintenance code can revoke a rental certificate of compliance over a single serious violation, or eight or more, left uncured 60 days after notice.
Cars towed off the street
Under Section 5-3-6, police may tow a car parked where it creates a traffic hazard, blocks traffic or blocks a fire hydrant. The village stores it and gives it back once the owner pays what the village spent removing and storing it.
Paperwork from the Secretary of State
Lake County does not hand out titles here; Illinois does. Round Lake Beach owners can bring the application to a Secretary of State facility or mail it to Springfield. The state's guide for sellers boils down to five things. Remove your plates. Give the buyer a signed, dated title. Mail in the Notice of Sale. Selling in Round Lake Beach, keep track of who bought it and their home address, and write the price and date of sale on a bill of sale. From there, the buyer gets 20 days to title it.
If the car is going to be crushed rather than driven, state law has a separate route. A Round Lake Beach junk vehicle owner has 15 days to request a junking certificate and turn over the title. That surrender is not needed when there is no lienholder. A junking certificate "may be assigned to anyone."
Lake County is one of the counties where cars get emissions tests. A failed test can be waived only after at least $1,176 of emissions-related repairs, and diagnostic labor does not count toward it. If the test is what stopped you, see failed emissions, and for stickers held up by tickets, see registration hold.

Questions people ask
- The car drives fine, but its registration has run out. Does Round Lake Beach care?
- It can be. Section 8-1-1-8 bans any "currently unregistered or inoperable motor vehicle" from being parked, kept or stored outside of a structure on any premises. A running car with lapsed registration fits the first half.
- Can a dead car sit on the grass beside my Round Lake Beach driveway?
- No. That section also says a motor vehicle may only be parked in approved off-street parking, and nowhere else.
- How long after a notice can the village remove the car?
- Seven days. The code official may remove unregistered or inoperable cars or their parts from public or private property in view of the public after seven days from a written notice to the owners.
- What if I scrap the car instead of selling it?
- In Round Lake Beach, a person with a junk vehicle has 15 days under Illinois law to seek a junking certificate and give up the title, unless there's no lienholder. A junking certificate can be assigned to anyone.
