Selling a dead or junk Kia Sorento
The 2011 Sorento has 1,519 complaints on file with NHTSA. That one model year has more than all seven first-generation years from 2003 to 2009 combined, which add up to 1,500. The car-based second-generation Sorento began with the 2011, which also won an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Owners' complaints on it name the structure (252), the engine (207) and the power train (201) most.

Sorento problems, generation by generation
Every count here comes from owner complaints in NHTSA's file, pulled October 10, 2026. A Sorento built in 2023 has simply been around for fewer years than a 2013 to draw them. Any vehicle count shown for a recall is for the full campaign. Most of these campaigns include other models too, not just the Sorento.
2003-2009: the body-on-frame first generation
Wikipedia describes the first Sorento as a compact SUV on a body-on-frame chassis, with rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. Engines were a 2.4 four, a 3.3 V6 and a 3.5 V6. Gearboxes: 5-speed manual, or an automatic with 4 or 5 speeds. These seven years hold 1,500 complaints.
The early years point at the engine: the 2003's leading category is engine and engine cooling (70), as is the 2004's (41), and the 2003 adds 40 fuel system complaints. By 2007-2009, air bags top the list (55, 65 and 19). Recall 20V088 covers 2007-2009 Sorentos, plus 2006-2010 Sedonas, because moisture can get into the anti-lock brake module and short it; that campaign counts 228,829 vehicles. Recall 09V130 replaced stop lamp switches on 2006-2007 models across five Kia lines.
2011-2015: the engine years begin
The second generation moved to a unibody, mid-size crossover developed alongside the Hyundai Santa Fe, built in Hwaseong, South Korea, and West Point, Georgia. Engines listed are the 2.4 Theta II (port and direct injection) and the 3.3 Lambda II GDI V6. These five years hold 5,119 complaints, nearly half the Sorento's total.
Engine complaints run 207, 380, 438, 333 and 324 from 2011 to 2015. Complaints that mention a fire run 63, 77, 44, 46 and 14. The recalls follow the same parts:
- 17V224: machining errors can cause early bearing wear in certain 2012-2014 Sorento engines. The fix is an inspection, and a new engine where needed. The campaign covers 618,160 vehicles, including Optimas and Sportages.
- 23V877: certain 2011 Sorentos can catch fire in the engine compartment while being driven. Dealers install Knock Sensor Detection System software and replace the engine as necessary. 79,812 vehicles, all 2011 Sorentos.
- 20V750: fire risk in the engine bay of 2012-2013 Sorentos. The campaign covers 294,756 vehicles and also includes the Forte, Optima Hybrid, Soul and Sportage.
- 15V626: too much force on the gear lever can defeat the brake-shift interlock on 2011-2013 Sorentos built October 19, 2009 to January 31, 2013.
- 20V519 and 21V331: on 2014-2015 Sorentos, leaking brake fluid inside the hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU) can short it. Kia's advice was to park outside until the repair. Both campaigns count 440,370 vehicles, shared with the Optima.
2016-2020: the third generation and the worst engine year
The second generation's North American run ended with the 2015 model year. The third was built from 2014 to 2020 with a 2.0 turbo four or a 2.4 four, and 6-speed or 8-speed automatics. The 2016 has 1,254 complaints, and 647 of them name the engine, the most engine complaints of any Sorento year. The 2017 adds 345 more, plus 103 for exterior lighting and 86 for steering.
Recall 18V907 reaches 2012-2017 Sorentos that already got a replacement engine under 17V224, under warranty or through the knock sensor software, to check the fuel pipe. On 2016-2022 Sorentos, recall 22V703 deals with the factory tow hitch wiring, and owners are told to park outdoors. The 2019 has its own camera recall, 23V639, for water leaking into the rearview camera.
2021 on: hybrids and a transmission recall
The fourth generation has been built in Hwaseong since July 2020, with 2.5 Smartstream engines, an 8-speed dual-clutch option, and Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid versions. Power train tops the 2021 (109 of 273) and 2022 (57 of 224). Recall 22V760 covers 2021-2022 Sorentos, plus K5s, because the limp-home mode may not work after a transmission oil pump fault; the remedy is an inspection and, where needed, a new transmission. Recall 25V006 fixes software that can drop the low beams on 2024-2025 models.

Because one campaign can reach several Sorento years, the recall column is not meant to be totaled.
Repair it or sell it?
Start with the recalls, because two of them can replace an engine at no cost to you.
- Engine knocking or dead on a 2011-2017? Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Ask a Kia dealer whether 17V224, 23V877 or 18V907 applies and was done. A replaced engine changes the decision.
- Burned in the engine bay? See fire damage before you spend on an estimate.
- 2021-2022 that won't move? Ask about 22V760 first.
- No recall covers it? Hold the shop's written quote up against the selling price of a running Sorento from your year. For help with that choice, read the blown engine guide. Facing a different Sorento fix? Has your Sorento reached that point? Not sure a Kia Sorento fix makes sense? Start with when a Sorento repair costs more than the SUV.
Selling your Sorento whole
- Know which one you have. A 2003-2009 is a body-on-frame 4WD or rear-drive SUV. A 2011 or newer is a unibody crossover. Hybrid and plug-in versions carry a battery pack, so say so.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it sits. If it has an open park-outside recall (the HECU or tow hitch campaigns), say if it sits in a garage or next to a building. If the engine is seized or the transmission is stuck, the truck can still load it; just tell us it won't roll.
- Leave it whole. Keep the engine, the catalytic converters and the wheels on. Tell us about anything already removed.
- The driver will want to see your photo ID and the title. What you do with the plates varies by state; see after you sell. Missing title? Start with selling with no title.

Questions people ask
- Which Sorento model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2011 is at the top. On October 10, 2026, the Sorento had 1,519 owner complaints on file at NHTSA. The 2016 (1,254), 2014 (988) and 2013 (981) trail it. The 2024 Sorento is only a couple of years old, so its 50 complaints don't tell much yet.
- Will Kia replace a failed Sorento engine under a recall?
- It depends on the VIN. Recall 17V224 covers certain 2012-2014 Sorentos for engine bearing wear, and 23V877 covers certain 2011 Sorentos for engine compartment fires. Each remedy includes a free engine replacement where needed. Run the Sorento's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and phone a Kia dealer before it goes.
- Do you buy a Sorento with a seized engine or fire damage?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Say what happened, whether the SUV rolls, and where it is parked.
- Does it matter if my Sorento is a hybrid or plug-in?
- Tell us which one it is. The fourth generation came as a Hybrid with a 1.62 kWh battery and a Plug-in Hybrid with a 13.68 kWh battery. You still sell the whole car as it sits.
