Selling a dead or junk car in Everett
With 53,572 people on 3.417 square miles of land, Everett has little room to spare, and a dead car takes a spot a neighbor could park in. State law sets the backstop. Under M.G.L. c. 90 s. 22C, a street officer may treat a vehicle "standing more than 72 hours" without permission as apparently abandoned. An Everett car worth less than the cost to remove and scrap it can be taken away "as refuse." We buy whole non-running and junk cars. Sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Everett's own code
Our search did not turn up Everett's ordinances online, so nothing here describes local yard-storage or street limits. The city could have tougher local rules too. On its automobile-law page, the state sends owners to local police guides about towing from private land and says each town sets its own bylaws. Check with Everett City Hall before you count on any grace period.
Statewide rules that reach Everett
Abandonment. Section 22C applies on "a public or private way" or other property when the owner hasn't given permission, once 72 hours pass and the car is worth less than the cost to remove it.
Private lots. In Everett, Chapter 266, section 120D allows a lot owner to remove a car only if the driver was warned off "by direct or posted notice," and the police must be informed. An Everett tower who skips telling police, or skips the owner's okay, faces a fine as high as $100.
Storage. When police order an Everett passenger car towed, the most the lot can charge is $35 per 24 hours if it is secure, fenced and lighted, and half that at any other lot. The storage operator holds a lien on the car.
If a garage has it
A car that quits at the shop can sit there for months. Chapter 255, section 39A puts a duty on any Everett garage. The Everett garage sends its storage prices to the registered owner through registered mail with a return receipt. After 60 days unclaimed, it may give notice. The Everett garage can sell after twenty-one more days, provided a local paper printed its notice for "three successive weeks" and the chief of police had 5 days' warning. The garage takes its charges, and the balance goes to the owner. Selling before it gets that far is often easier. See stuck at a repair shop.
Paperwork for an Everett sale
Odometer reading first. Next, both people in an Everett sale sign, print their names and write the date on the title's assignment. The RMV lists no notary for this. An Everett title with no price line needs a bill of sale showing the amount. The buyer's paperwork goes through a licensed insurance agent. Under c. 90D s. 15, you're shielded from later violations as soon as you've signed and delivered, even if the new title hasn't been issued yet.
Keep your plates. Cancel the registration online, save the confirmation and copy it to your insurer. Then snip the plates or take them for recycling. The RMV doesn't want them back. Cancelling also halts Everett's excise. After you sell has more.

Questions people ask
- Does Everett have its own junk-car ordinance?
- Its ordinances weren't online when we looked, so the rules on this page are state law. Everett may still have local ones. Ask the city before counting on a grace period.
- Can a private lot in Everett tow my car?
- State law allows it only when the driver had been barred from parking there by a direct or posted notice from the person in control, and police are informed. A tow made without telling police, or without the owner agreeing, risks a fine as high as $100.
- A garage has had my dead car for months. Can it sell it?
- State law lets the garage give notice after 60 unclaimed days. An Everett garage then holds off 21 days before a sale. Over those weeks an Everett paper runs the notice once a week, three times in all. The police chief gets told 5 days before. An Everett garage takes what it's owed from the sale and passes the remainder to the registered owner.
