Selling a dead or junk car in Randolph

Got a stranger's dead car on your Randolph land? Massachusetts sets the order of things in c. 266 s. 120D. Towing from private property is allowed only if whoever controls the land had forbidden the parking, by a posted sign or by telling the driver directly, and Randolph police have to be informed. Skip that, or tow without the owner's consent, and the fine can reach $100. When the dead car is your own, it's simpler: we buy whole non-running and junk cars, you sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Randolph's own bylaws

Searching online, we found no copy of Randolph's town code, so state law carries this page. Randolph could also keep a town bylaw about junk or unregistered cars. For private-property tows, the RMV refers owners to local police guides, so Randolph's police are the people to ask.

A second statute covers cars left on streets or on land without permission. Under c. 90 s. 22C, a street officer in Randolph can label a car standing over 72 hours apparently abandoned and scrap it as refuse when towing and disposal cost more than its value. Someone else's car stuck in your yard? Read car abandoned on your property.

Moving your plates to the next car

Randolph sellers keep their plates. If a replacement car is coming, those same plates may go on it within 7 calendar days of letting the old one go, provided you're at least 18 and the plates are physically on the new car. The RMV doesn't issue temporary plates, so that week is all the gap you get.

No replacement planned? Cancel on MyMassGov, hold onto the confirmation for your insurance company, then cut the plates up or drop them at recycling. Randolph bills $25 per $1,000 of value in excise until that cancellation, parked or not. After it, the car can't legally use a public way.

The paperwork that changes hands

Your job on a Randolph sale: the odometer number, then signatures, printed names and dates from you and the buyer on the title's transfer block. No notary shows up anywhere in the RMV's seller steps. When the title lacks a price space, a bill of sale must show the amount, and bill of sale lays out what to include.

Older cars skip the title entirely. No title was ever required on a model year 1980 or earlier passenger car purchased before Nov. 26, 1990, so a Randolph buyer gets a bill of sale plus the most recent registration.

Massachusetts has no release form to mail. For a Randolph seller, chapter 90D, section 15 says tickets after the signed assignment and handover belong to someone else, even while the buyer's title is still pending.

When you want an offer

Tell us the make and model, its year, the mileage, whether it runs, and any title details, online or at (877) 421-6008. The truck can reach the car on a Randolph side street, in a driveway, or at the far end of a lot.

Questions people ask

A car was left in my Randolph lot. Can I call a tow truck?
Under c. 266 s. 120D, only if the driver had been forbidden to park there, by a sign or in person, and the police are notified. A tow without that police notice or the owner's consent risks a fine of up to $100.
Can my old plates go on the car I buy next?
Yes. Randolph owners 18 or older can put them on the new car within 7 calendar days of getting rid of the old one. The RMV offers no temporary plates.
My car is a 1980 or older model. Is a title needed?
Passenger cars of model year 1980 or earlier that were bought before Nov. 26, 1990 were never titled. In Randolph, these change hands with a bill of sale and the prior registration.
