Selling a junk or parked Mercedes-Benz R-Class
Two Do Not Drive recalls, 22V315 and 24V298, tell owners of certain 2006-2012 R-Class vehicles not to drive them until a dealer deals with the brake booster. They say moisture can collect and corrode the booster. They also cover the ML-Class and GL-Class, so their 350,294 and 15,604 vehicles are counts for all three models together.

Early R-Class versus late R-Class
Wikipedia calls the R-Class a mid-size luxury MPV, built in Vance, Alabama from 2005 to 2014 and related to the M-Class. Sales were strong for the 2006 and 2007 model years, fell in 2008 after the recession, and the model left North America in 2012. The complaint file follows the same curve.
| Model years | Complaints | Fire reports | What owners filed most | Recalls aimed at these years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2006-2007 | 195 | 21 | Suspension, engine, seats | Starter harness, seat belt buckle, accelerator pedal, diesel crankshaft sensor |
| 2008-2012 | 94 | 0 | Air bags, steering, brakes | Driver air bag inflator |
The brake booster recalls cover both groups. These are NHTSA complaint totals on October 10, 2026, and they do not rate reliability.
2006-2007: suspension and fire reports
Suspension tops both years: 30 complaints on the 2006 and 16 on the 2007. It is the R-Class's most named component overall, at 53, and all of them fall on the 2006-2008 cars.
Every one of the 21 complaints that reported a fire is on a 2006 (14) or 2007 (7). The 2006 also lists 15 engine and engine cooling complaints and 14 for the engine. The 2007 has 11 about the seats.
Four recalls are aimed at these early cars. Their vehicle totals can take in more than the R-Class:
- 06V098: starter wiring harness that could be routed wrong and chafe at the engine mount cover, 7,000 vehicles.
- 06V101: second-row seat belt buckle nuts that may be missing their threads, 2,500 vehicles. Dealers replace the seat if needed.
- 06V495: accelerator pedal that may not be fully fastened to its studs on some 2007 vehicles, 1,570 vehicles.
- 08V006: crankshaft sensor on diesel 2006-2007 models that can lose its electrical connection, 9,004 vehicles. That is the R320 CDI on this model.
2008-2012: air bags take over
Steering leads the 2008 with 9 of 38. From the 2009 on, air bags are first every year: 9, 7, 12 and 5 complaints, which adds up to all 33 air bag complaints the R-Class has.
Recall 16V081 lines up with that. Under it, 2009-2012 R320 CDI 4Matic and other vehicles get a new inflator for the driver's frontal air bag. The campaign is 711,159 vehicles and includes ML, GL and E-Class models, plus Chrysler vehicles.
EPA data lists 2013 R-Class versions, but NHTSA holds no complaints for that year. Its one recall, 17V247, covered a single 2013 R320 4MATIC CDI.
R-Class numbers, year by year
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Fires | Injured | Recalls listing it | Top component (count) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2006 | 128 | 4 | 14 | 6 | 6 | Suspension (30) |
| 2007 | 67 | 1 | 7 | 6 | 5 | Suspension (16) |
| 2008 | 38 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | Steering (9) |
| 2009 | 17 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | Air bags (9) |
| 2010 | 13 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | Air bags (7) |
| 2011 | 18 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 3 | Air bags (12) |
| 2012 | 8 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | Air bags (5) |
The R-Class sold far fewer cars after 2007, which helps explain the smaller counts. Later vehicles have also spent fewer years out there drawing reports.
Fix the R-Class or sell it?
- Look up the booster recall before anything else. Enter your VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. If it's open, the notice says not to drive the car, so call a Mercedes-Benz dealer about what they can do.
- Sagging, leaning or a rough ride? Suspension leads the early cars. Our broken suspension guide covers what the fix involves and when it stops making sense.
- 2009-2012 with the air bag light lit? Have a dealer check if the 16V081 inflator swap was done.
- Don't want to sort out the recall? You can still sell it; open recall explains what to tell a buyer.
Selling it as it sits
- Write down the VIN and mileage and what's wrong, including any open recall.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where the R-Class is. With the booster recall still open, don't move it to the curb. Our truck can get to a garage, driveway or back lot.
- Leave it complete, seats and wheels included.
- Have the title ready. If it isn't in your name, see car not in your name.

Questions people ask
- Can I drive my R-Class to a buyer if the brake booster recall is open?
- If your 2006-2012 R-Class falls under recalls 22V315 and 24V298, keep it parked until the fix is made. Enter your R-Class VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. If the recall is open and you're selling, don't drive it. Our truck comes to where the car is parked.
- Which R-Class years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2006 leads at 128 on October 10, 2026, and the 2007 comes next at 67. Suspension is the top component on both. Later years have far fewer complaints.
- Is there a recall for the R320 CDI diesel?
- Yes. Recall 08V006 replaced the crankshaft sensor on diesel 2006-2007 models, 9,004 vehicles in a campaign that covered other models too. A separate recall, 17V247, covered a single 2013 R320 4MATIC CDI.
- Do you buy an R-Class that has been sitting for years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits, flat tires and all; just tell us what shape it's in.
