Selling a dead or junk car in Wyoming, Michigan
A car with no current plate can sit in the open in Wyoming for seven days. On day eight it breaks Section 90-314 of the zoning code, which says no vehicle that needs plates "shall be parked or stored in the open for more than seven days without bearing a current registration plate." We buy whole non-running and junk cars, so that week can end with the car leaving whole, as it sits. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The second seven-day clock
The same section runs a parallel clock for cars that cannot be driven legally. No vehicle "which is not fully capable of being lawfully operated on a public roadway, nor any major component or parts" may be stored more than seven days "unless stored in a fully enclosed building." A tarp or an open carport is not a fully enclosed building. A plated car with a blown engine and a running car with a dead plate both end up under Section 90-314, through different sentences.
If you are fixing it yourself, the section also bars work between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. unless it is done "in an enclosed garage with the door shut" and makes no noise that bothers the neighbors.
What the property code adds
Wyoming's property maintenance rules in Section 10-179 go wider than zoning. Unless the zoning ordinance or form based code allows it, no "dismantled, partially dismantled, inoperable, unregistered, or unlicensed" vehicle may be kept outdoors on any premises, and no vehicle may be "in a state of major disassembly, disrepair" there either.
Landlords have a second reason to care. The same section lets the code official deny or suspend a rental registration when violations repeat or are not corrected "within 30 days after notice is given," and an inspection comes before a registration is restored. A tenant's dead car parked outside is a violation on that premises like any other.
Winter: odd and even sides
Section 70-77 limits parking between midnight and 6:00 p.m. to the even-numbered side on even calendar days, and to the odd side on odd days. On a cul-de-sac, street parking is allowed only on even days. The city manager can also declare a snow emergency when winter weather makes it "prudent" to clear the streets. A car that won't start can't change sides overnight, which makes the curb a poor place to leave one.
The Michigan paperwork
Until the buyer transfers the title, the record still shows the Wyoming seller, which is why the Department of State suggests the two of you visit a branch office together. Otherwise, MCL 257.240 wants proof of the sale saved for 18 months or more. In Wyoming, a photocopy of the reassigned title counts as the seller's record. So does a buyer-signed sheet with the date, price, and buyer's name, address and driver license number. A Wyoming seller who skips both faces a possible $15 civil infraction. If someone dumps the car later, the seller pays for its towing and storage.
Hand the buyer the original title once the odometer statement and seller part are done and all listed owners have signed. Pull your plate when you sell. Per the state, a Wyoming seller who leaves it on might get the new owner's parking tickets. If the title is lost, see selling with no title.

Questions people ask
- How long can an unregistered car sit at my house in Wyoming?
- Seven days. Section 90-314 bars keeping a car that needs plates in the open for more than seven days without a current plate issued for it. In Wyoming a car that can't legally be driven also gets seven days, unless it is kept in a fully enclosed building.
- Will a tarp or carport keep me within the rule?
- The zoning section asks for a fully enclosed building, and a tarp or open carport is not one. The property maintenance code, Section 10-179, also bars inoperable or unregistered vehicles outdoors on any premises unless the zoning ordinance or form based code allows it.
- In winter, what side of the street am I allowed to park on?
- Section 70-77 says that between midnight and 6 p.m., even calendar days mean the even-numbered side and odd days mean the odd side. Cul-de-sacs allow on-street parking only on even days, and posted no parking signs always apply.
- Does a Wyoming sale mean a trip to the branch office with the buyer?
- It is not required. The Department of State still advises it, since your name stays on the title record until the buyer does the transfer. Not going? From then on, keep a two-sided copy of the signed Wyoming title for at least 18 months.
