Selling a dead or junk Mitsubishi 3000GT

Almost half of all NHTSA complaints on the 3000GT name the power train: 217 of 462 in NHTSA's count dated October 10, 2026. Seat belts come second with 135. Between them, those two categories make up the top two on every model year from 1991 to 1999.

3.0 V6: SOHC, DOHC or twin-turbo DOHC

Even with a locked-up engine or a drivetrain that quit, your 3000GT is still sellable. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

What changed from 1991 to 1999

Wikipedia lists three versions of the 3.0-liter 6G72 V6: SOHC, DOHC 24-valve, and DOHC twin-turbo. Cars came with front- or four-wheel drive. The 4-speed automatic got INVECS in 1992, and a 6-speed manual replaced the 5-speed on some cars from 1993.

Features dropped out as prices rose. Mitsubishi dropped the tunable exhaust once 1994 ended, the electronic suspension once 1995 ended, and the active aerodynamics once 1996 ended. A 2-door convertible ran in 1995-1996; EPA lists it as the 3000 GT Spyder. The 3000GT was built on the same Nagoya line as the Dodge Stealth, and Wikipedia says the SOHC engine joined the 3000GT range after the Stealth ended.

Known problems by period

1991-1993: power train and the transfer case

These three years hold 244 complaints, and 149 name the power train. Two recalls are about the all-wheel-drive transfer case leaking oil:

  • 93V033000 (1991): low transfer case oil can damage the bearings and cause failure. Dealers add a C-ring or replace the case. Campaign: 3,154 vehicles.
  • 02V143001 (1991-1999): dealers inspect for leaks or damage and reseal leaking cases. Campaign: 15,000 vehicles.

The 1993 stands out for another reason: its 67 complaints report 50 injuries. That is 50 of the 65 injuries across the whole 3000GT file.

The 1991 also carries recall 95V103004. On the front seat belts, the red plastic PRESS button can crack and leave the buckle stuck. The campaign's 658,000 vehicles reach well beyond the 3000GT.

1994-1996: seat belts move to the top

On the 1994, seat belts lead with 36 of 72 complaints, double the power train's 18. This period holds 156 complaints. Recalls 96V143001 and 96V143002 name 1991-1994 cars. With the wheel turned all the way and the suspension fully stretched, a front brake hose can crack and leak. Their counts, 93,000 and 10,000, include other models such as the Diamante.

1997-1999: fewer complaints, wheels appear

The last three years total 62 complaints. On the 1997 (7) and the 1998 (4), wheels make each year's top three. The 1999 also has recall 04V428000 for bilingual air bag warning labels, a 100,432-vehicle campaign across several passenger cars.

Complaints and recalls by model year

NHTSA complaint counts for each 3000GT year, pulled October 10, 2026. For the 3000GT, a recall shows under every model year it names, and a single campaign often names many years. A 1999 has had fewer years to gather complaints than a 1991.

Fix it or sell it

Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before anything else, since the transfer case campaign spans every year.

Next, ask the shop for a written quote and hold it up against the price of a running 3000GT with your trim and mileage. A drivetrain that won't engage points to the bad transmission guide. On a twin-turbo car that has lost boost, see failed turbo. If it has been sitting half-finished in a garage, old project car covers selling one as it is.

How the sale works

  1. Have the VIN, mileage and the fault ready, and say whether it's a coupe or a Spyder.
  2. Request an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where it's parked and whether it rolls. A low sports car in a tight garage needs the right truck, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave your 3000GT whole. If something is already off it, mention it, since gone parts move the offer.
  5. Pass the title and keys to the driver who loads it. Plate rules vary; see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which 3000GT years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1992: 115 complaints by NHTSA's October 10, 2026 count, 71 naming the power train. The 1994 (72), 1993 (67) and 1991 (62) follow. Later 3000GTs have had fewer years in which to draw complaints.
What is the 3000GT transfer case recall?
Oil seeping out of the all-wheel-drive transfer case is the subject of two recalls. 93V033000 lists the 1991 and says low oil can damage the bearings; 02V143001 lists 1991-1999 cars and has dealers inspect and reseal leaking cases. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Will you buy a 3000GT that doesn't run?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us whether it rolls and whether it's all-wheel drive, so the right truck comes.
