Selling a dead or junk Mitsubishi Tredia

NHTSA lists no recall campaigns for the Mitsubishi Tredia. Owners filed four complaints with NHTSA about it, one for each model year from 1984 through 1987. EPA data has this subcompact car from 1984 to 1988, so nothing in the federal record points to a known weak spot on a Tredia that has quit.

What the Tredia was

Wikipedia says Mitsubishi built the Tredia from 1982 to 1990 at its Nagoya Plant in Okazaki, Japan, and that Takio Nakagawa designed it. It had a front engine with front- or four-wheel drive, and it was related to the Cordia. The Lancer replaced it.

Four engines are listed:

  • 1410 cc 4G12 four
  • 1597 cc 4G32 four
  • 1597 cc 4G32T turbo four
  • 1755 cc 4G37 four

The gearbox story is more tangled. Wikipedia lists a 5-speed manual, and says the Super Shift gearbox was also fitted to Turbo models. Later a regular five-speed replaced the Super Shift in many models, though Super Shift stayed available until the Tredia ended in 1990. If you're selling one, say which gearbox yours has.

Four complaints, no pattern

  • 1984: engine and engine cooling.
  • 1985: seat belts. Of the four, it alone mentions a crash.
  • 1986: engine and engine cooling.
  • 1987: seat belts.

None reports a fire, injury, death or tow. Two engine reports and two belt reports spread over four years don't add up to a trend.

Complaints by model year

Every number below is a Tredia owner complaint that NHTSA had logged by October 10, 2026. Newer model years usually carry fewer reports, since they have spent less time on the road. Every Tredia in EPA data is a 1984 to 1988 model, though, and no year has more than one complaint.

Worth fixing?

There is no recall to check and no complaint trend to guide you, so start with a diagnosis of your own car. Next, hold the written figure up against the sale price of a running Tredia with the same engine. If fixing costs more, skip the bill and sell it unrepaired.

For a Tredia off the road for years, our guide to a car sitting for years lists what to look at. If the title went missing long ago, selling with no title explains your options.

Selling a Tredia whole

  1. Note the VIN, the engine, the gearbox and the mileage.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where the Tredia is and if its wheels turn, which decides how it gets loaded.
  4. Leave it complete. If parts are gone, say which.
  5. Give the driver the title and any keys. After you sell covers plates and insurance.
