When the shop is holding your car
If your car went to a garage and never came home, the law has a rule for that. New Jersey gives repair facilities a way out under N.J.S.A. 39:10A-9 and following. A Perth Amboy repair shop may treat a car as one that "may be deemed abandoned" once it has held it "more than 60 days without consent," or 60 days after letting the owner know the job is finished. After that, a Perth Amboy shop can tow the car and hold it, put it up for sale, or apply to have it junk titled.
When the repair quote tops what the car would sell for, making a call before day 60 keeps the choice with you. Stuck on a Perth Amboy repair estimate? Facing a Perth Amboy shop quote bigger than your car's value? See our guide on that choice.
What a junk title means here
New Jersey reserves junk titles for cars that cannot run, or that would need more money to make safe than they are worth. A salvage vehicle is a different thing: one an insurer considers uneconomical to repair after a wreck or other damage. All salvage vehicles must be titled in New Jersey, even if they are never restored.
On the street or on private land
Perth Amboy holds 56,739 people on 4.662 square miles. We could not find Perth Amboy's town code online, so we have no city junk-car rule to share. The city may have one that is stricter than state law. Under state law:
- A car abandoned on public property is "offered at public auction or junked," under N.J.S.A. 39:10A-1 and following.
- A car abandoned on private property "must be put up for public sale/auction" under N.J.S.A. 39:4-56.6. When no one bids on the Perth Amboy car, the property owner can apply for its title.
Selling with the title in hand
For a Perth Amboy car, the title transfer happens at a motor vehicle agency and nowhere else. As the Perth Amboy seller, you sign the seller spot on the back. Next, a Perth Amboy seller hands over the title. A bill of sale goes with it, showing the miles, the price, when the sale happened, and where the buyer lives and who they are. The buyer fills in their section and takes it to an agency. If they wait past 10 working days, a $25 penalty applies.
You keep the plates. In Perth Amboy, the plates get handed in at an MVC agency or moved to another car of yours.
Without the title
For a $60 duplicate, book a visit at a Vehicle Center, for example the one in Dayton. A Perth Amboy owner brings one paper linking them to the car, along with OS/SS-UTA, the "Universal Title Application." A registration card, even an old one, will do. An insurance card works too, and so does a certified copy of your registration record. See junk car with no title.
