Selling a dead or unregistered car in Auburn
Auburn takes unregistered cars off its streets. Article XI of the city's vehicles and traffic chapter says "it shall be illegal to park upon any street within the City of Auburn a vehicle which is not registered," and the same goes for a car whose registration was suspended or revoked. A dead car with lapsed tags parked out front is exactly what that rule is about. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you can sell the whole car as it sits. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.

What happens when police tow it
The Auburn Police Department has the power to remove any car covered by the article. It can store the car "in a suitable place and at the expense of the owner." To get it back, whoever owns or had charge of the car pays the towing and storage companies "all expenses actually or necessarily incurred" in the removal.
The officers who order the tow must report it to the department without delay. The department then has a duty to find the owner, as far as it can, and say the car was removed and where it went.
The code sets no grace period in the sections we read. Being unregistered on the street is the violation.
In the driveway instead of the street
Auburn's article speaks only to streets. State ยง 1224 covers cars abandoned in public places or on someone else's land. In Auburn, a junk car on its owner's own property falls under local law. Auburn could regulate yards and driveways separately, so a call to City Hall is worth making first.
Lapsed registration: renew it or let it go
Plates that ran out recently can still be renewed online, for up to a year after they expired. Wait longer and New York treats it as a fresh registration, done in person or by mail. The DMV's renewal page mentioned no back-year fee.
When the car isn't worth new plates, a sale closes the file. With a title, sign it over and add an MV-912 bill of sale; New York requires no notary. Without one, MV-35 may fit. It is for an owner who never titled the car after buying it, or who lost the title. The car has to be valued at $1,250 or under and be eight or more model years old. In Auburn the buyer has to be registered with the DMV as a dismantler or itinerant vehicle collector, or be a certified scrap processor. In Auburn, the owner and the delivery driver both add a government ID. For an Auburn car, the dismantler files within 15 business days, and no new title is ever issued.
Your plates
Valid plates come off with the windshield sticker. Turn them in first and only then drop coverage. Doing it the other way around risks a suspended registration and possibly your license. Save the FS-6T receipt alongside the bill of sale. After you sell covers the details.

Questions people ask
- Can I park an unregistered car on an Auburn street?
- No. Article XI of the city's vehicles and traffic chapter makes it illegal to park a vehicle on any city street if it is not registered under the state Vehicle and Traffic Law, or if its registration has been suspended or revoked.
- How much does Auburn charge to release a towed car?
- The code names no fixed amount. The owner pays the towing and storage companies whatever expenses the removal actually or necessarily ran up.
- My registration expired two years ago. Can I renew it?
- Online renewal stops at one year past expiration. Beyond that, New York has you register the car anew, in person at a DMV office or through the mail. The DMV renewal page we read listed no back-year fee.
- Can I sell a junk car to a tow-truck driver with Form MV-35?
- No. An Auburn car sold on MV-35 must go to a dismantler, certified scrap processor or itinerant vehicle collector that is DMV-registered. Private buyers, tow-truck drivers and charities are excluded.
