Selling a dead or junk car in Freeport
New York law allows an unclaimed abandoned car removed from a Freeport street to be sold once ten days pass after the owner gets notice. The owner who wants it back pays for the tow and the storage. That clock, from Vehicle and Traffic Law 1224, is the plainest rule we can point to for this village of 44,174. We could not find Freeport's own code online, and the village may well have rules of its own, so treat what follows as the state floor.

How a dead car turns "abandoned"
The state names three ways. Strip the plates and leave the car somewhere public, and six hours is the limit. Leave it anywhere public for more than 24 hours, and it qualifies too. Parked on someone else's Freeport property without permission, a car gets four days. Whichever town, city or village the car was left in gets custody.
Next steps in Freeport turn on the car. With no plates and a wholesale value of $2,250 or under, that authority owns it at once and can send it for junk, salvage or scrap with no title. Every other car gets the letter and the ten-day wait described above.
A dead car on your own Freeport lot is a different matter. That state law only covers public spots and other people's land. Your own property is left to local law, which is where the village's rules would come in.
If it has already been towed
Call the tow company to learn where it took the car and how much you owe. Under the state rule, a claimant pays removal and storage before the car comes back. Our guide on towed or impounded cars weighs paying to get it back against selling it from the lot.
The paperwork on a Freeport sale
You sign twice. Once in the assignment spot on the title's back, and once on the MV-912, New York's Vehicle Bill of Sale. A notary plays no part in either. The bill names the two parties and the car, with its VIN, the price and the date. Copies go home with each of you, and the original ends up at the DMV with the buyer. See bill of sale for what goes in each blank.
Title gone? The MV-902 brings a duplicate for $20.00. Albany prints it and puts it in the mail.
Your plates stay with you
Pull the plates and the windshield sticker the day the car leaves Freeport. Freeport sellers have no state notice-of-sale form to send. Instead, the plates you kept and your copy of the MV-912 are what you show if a lapse letter ever arrives. The DMV sums it up as "No insurance, no plates." Turn the plates in before the policy stops, and ask for the FS-6T. The counter takes plates only, not frames or screws.

Questions people ask
- Does Freeport have its own junk-car law?
- We could not find Freeport's village code online, so this page relies on New York law. Village Hall can say whether the village adds rules for junk or unregistered cars.
- Freeport took my abandoned car. How long do I have?
- Vehicle and Traffic Law 1224 has the local authority write to the last owner first. If no one claims the car within ten days of that letter, it can be auctioned or sold by bid, and it changes hands then. Freeport owners pay the towing and storage bill before the car is released.
- Can I sell a junk car in Freeport without a title?
- Sometimes. Freeport owners can use Form MV-35 when the car is eight model years old or older and its value is $1,250 or under. The buyer must be a dismantler, itinerant collector or scrap processor registered with the state, never a private person or a tow-truck driver.
