Selling a dead Nissan Armada

Which Armada you have decides what usually went wrong with it. The first ones, built in Mississippi from 2004, drew hundreds of brake complaints. The Japanese-built 2017-2019 SUVs drew battery and electrical complaints instead. Either kind can be sold dead: we buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

The first ones wore the name Pathfinder Armada. Engines for the second generation came from Decherd, Tennessee. Wikipedia says that generation went on sale in mid-2016 as a 2017 model, and NHTSA's file holds just one complaint under 2016.

Known problems, oldest first

Brakes on the 2004-2006

Service brakes are the component owners listed most on all three early years: 291 of 464 complaints on the 2004, 200 of 373 on the 2005 and 179 of 266 on the 2006. In NHTSA's online records for the 2004, 153 of 315 brake complaints mention a warning light, 90 mention rotors and 86 mention grinding. One owner wrote: "BRAKE LIGHT ON DASH GOES ON AND THE BRAKES GRAB, MAKE IT HARD TO STOP WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED." Neither Nissan nor NHTSA has published anything we could find that explains them.

First-generation recalls

  • 2004-2006: a faulty engine control relay that can cut the engine out (10V517).
  • 2005-2006: an air conditioning condenser fan motor not sealed against water. Corrosion can overheat it and cause a fire (08V284).
  • 2005-2009: a fuel gauge that can read about a quarter tank on an empty tank, so the SUV runs out and stalls (10V074, 340,000 vehicles).
  • 2008-2010: a brake pedal pivot pin that can slide, loosening the pedal and cutting braking force (10V072). The 2008 has six recall campaigns, more than any other Armada year.
  • 2013-2015: a driver air bag inflator that may rupture and throw metal fragments (20V188).
  • Early 2015 builds: a parking pawl that may not fully engage, on 194 SUVs (14V803).

Dead batteries on the 2017-2019

Electrical system tops the complaint list on the 2017 (23 of 81), the 2018 (30 of 75) and the 2019 (35 of 78). On the 2019, 27 of 42 electrical complaints in NHTSA's online records mention the battery. Owners write of a battery that goes flat every few months and needs a jump. No recall in the file covers it.

Newer recalls

  • 2020-2021 with the V8: a fuel pump impeller that can swell and bind, so the pump fails and the engine stalls (21V373).
  • 2025-2026: a software error at startup that can leave the rearview camera blank in reverse (25V821).
  • 2020-2026 with 22-inch wheels: a certification label with the wrong axle weight rating, which can lead to overloading (26V455, July 2026).

Complaints and recalls by model year

Armada counts were pulled on October 10, 2026, from NHTSA's bulk data. Years with few complaints are grouped, and a campaign that spans several years in a row counts once. The 1,850 complaints report 69 crashes, 29 fires and 2 deaths. The newest years have had the least time to collect complaints.

Worth fixing?

Open recalls come first. Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup and let a Nissan dealer handle anything listed.

Then price the real repair in writing and set it beside what the same Armada sells for running. A first-generation SUV is now 11 to 22 years old, and a large quote can pass its running value. On a 2017-2019 with a battery that keeps dying, find the cause of the drain before you decide anything. Our page on selling a car that doesn't run covers the first checks, and what a junk car is worth explains what moves an offer.

Getting it sold

  1. Gather the details: VIN, mileage, two- or four-wheel drive, and what's wrong, whether that's brakes, a battery, a stall or a wreck.
  2. Request an offer online, or phone (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where it sits. A three-row SUV in a garage or a tight driveway takes some planning, so say so up front.
  4. Keep it complete. Wheels, battery and catalytic converters stay on. Tell us about anything already removed.
  5. Have the title ready. If it's lost, read selling without a title. The plate rules for your state are in after you sell.

Questions people ask

Why do so many 2004-2006 Armada complaints mention the brakes?
Owners describe a brake warning light, grabbing brakes, rotors and grinding. We found no Nissan or NHTSA document explaining it, and no recall covers it. Service brakes are the component listed most on 291 of the 2004's 464 complaints.
Was there a 2016 Nissan Armada?
Not as a new design. Wikipedia says the second generation went on sale in mid-2016 as a 2017 model. NHTSA's file still holds a single complaint filed under 2016.
My 2017-2019 Armada keeps killing its battery. Is there a recall?
Not in NHTSA's file. Electrical system is the top complaint category on all three years, and on the 2019, 27 of 42 electrical complaints in NHTSA's online records mention the battery. Get the drain traced before you decide what the SUV is worth to you.
Can you pick up a full-size SUV that won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, SUVs included, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us where the Armada sits and whether its wheels turn.
