Selling a Nissan Sentra that won't run
Nearly half the NHTSA complaints on 2013-2017 Sentras mention the CVT or the transmission: 877 of 1,870. If yours is one of them and the repair costs more than the car, you don't have to fix it. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. Sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

The Sentra has been sold since the 1980s, across nine generations. Here is where the trouble sits:
- 2000-2006: engine sensor recalls, an oil-burning recall on the 2006 2.5, and passenger air bag inflators, some with a do-not-drive order.
- 2007-2012: the first CVT Sentras, plus a brake master cylinder recall on 2007-2008.
- 2013-2019: the CVT complaint years, with Nissan's 84-month warranty extensions.
- 2020 and newer: tie rod recalls on 2020-2022, and CVT driveshaft recalls on 2024-2025.
The CVT years
2007-2012: the first CVT Sentras
The sixth-generation Sentra came from Aguascalientes, Mexico, with a 2.0 or 2.5 four. Nissan's 2008 press kit lists a 6-speed manual or the Xtronic CVT. On these years, 137 of 842 complaints mention the CVT or the transmission. Nissan's owners site lists a 10-year, 120,000-mile CVT extension on 2003-2010 models, so even the newest car it reached is past it.
2013-2019: the complaint peak
For 2013 Nissan paired a new 1.8-liter engine with what its press kit called a next-generation Xtronic CVT. Complaints climbed fast. The 2013 has 638, the most of any Sentra year, and power train is the component named on 273 of them. The 2014 adds 380 and the 2015 351.
The median mileage reported in 2013-2016 complaints runs from 55,500 to 67,000. That is close to where Nissan's original five-year, 60,000-mile CVT coverage ran out. Nissan later extended it:
| Sentras | CVT coverage | Starting |
|---|---|---|
| 2013-2017 | 84 months or 84,000 miles | May 11, 2020 |
| 2018-2019 | 84 months or 84,000 miles | May 23, 2023 |
Whichever limit comes first ends it. By now almost every one of these cars has aged out. If yours is a low-mileage 2019, ask a dealer to run the VIN.
Air bags on the 2002-2006
These years sit inside three passenger air bag inflator recalls: 15V287, 20V008 and 20V747. The last one, for Takata inflators, is the serious one. It covers 3,930 Sentras whose passenger air bag was inspected and released without the inflator being replaced, and NHTSA says not to drive them. The recall notice says the inflator can explode in a crash and throw metal fragments.
Engines on the 2000-2006
Engine and cooling is the component owners name most on every year from 2000 through 2005. The 2002 has 304 complaints and 10 recalls. The recalls point to sensors and oil:
- 03V455: a crank or cam sensor solder joint can fail and stall 2000-2003 engines.
- 06V242 and 07V527: the crank sensor on the 2.5 can lose its signal from heat and stall the car, 2002-2006.
- 06V223: piston rings on 2006 2.5-liter engines can let them burn too much oil. Run low enough, the recall says, and the engine can be damaged or catch fire.
Brakes, steering and driveshafts
Recalls 08V311 and 09V431 cover Bosch brake master cylinders on 2007-2008 Sentras that can leak fluid. A brake light switch on 2016-2019 cars can get contaminated so the lights don't come on (21V135, 807,376 cars). Tie rods on 2020-2022 Sentras can bend and break (21V461 and 23V581), and steering is the component named most on those three years. On 2024 and 2025 cars, the left front driveshaft may not be fully seated in the CVT, which can leak fluid and cut power (24V304 and 26V410).
Complaints and recalls by model year
Owner complaints and recall campaigns per model year, as NHTSA's data stood when we pulled it on October 10, 2026; a multi-year campaign appears in each year's row. The 1984-1990 cars are grouped because so few complaints exist for them. "Median miles" is the middle odometer reading owners gave.

The component owners name most shifts with the years: air bags on 1995-1998 and 2006-2009, engine and cooling on 2000-2005, power train on 2012-2018 and steering on 2020-2022.
Repair or sell: three questions
Is anything still covered? Check open recalls at NHTSA's VIN search first. On a 2024 or 2025 with a fluid leak, the driveshaft recall may be the whole story.
What does the repair cost against the car? Put the shop's number next to listings for a running Sentra of your year and mileage. A CVT on an older Sentra can cost more than the car brings. The bad transmission guide explains the warning signs and the choices.
Is it more than one thing? A car with a bad CVT and a recall still open, or a worn engine and rust, adds up fast. What a junk car is worth covers what moves the number on a car that doesn't run.
How selling your Sentra works
Have the VIN, the mileage and a short list of what's wrong. Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008. Mention the spot it's sitting in, a garage, a curb or a lot, and if it will roll once shifted to Neutral. Leave the battery, wheels and catalytic converter on, and mention anything that's already been taken off.
At pickup, hand over the signed title and show a photo ID. Whether you keep the plates depends on your state; see after you sell. If the title is lost, read selling a junk car with no title first.
Questions people ask
- Which Sentra years have the most transmission complaints?
- The 2013 through 2017. NHTSA holds 1,870 complaints on those five years, and 877 of them mention the CVT or the transmission. The 2013 alone has 638 complaints, more than any other Sentra year.
- Is my Sentra's CVT still under Nissan's extended warranty?
- Probably not. In May 2020 Nissan extended the CVT warranty on 2013-2017 Sentras to seven years or 84,000 miles, and 2018-2019 cars got matching terms in May 2023. Seven years have passed for almost all of them, but a 2019 that went into service late could still be inside the window if it is under 84,000 miles. A dealer can check the VIN.
- What does the do-not-drive recall on 2002-2006 Sentras mean?
- Recall 20V747 covers 3,930 Sentras whose passenger air bag was inspected and released without the Takata inflator being replaced. NHTSA's advice is not to drive one until the repair is done. Enter the VIN on NHTSA's recall site to see if it's still open. If you sell it instead, say so up front, because the car has to be loaded rather than driven.
- My 2024 or 2025 Sentra is leaking transmission fluid. Is that a recall?
- It might be. Recalls 24V304 (2024) and 26V410 (2025) cover a left front driveshaft that may not be fully seated in the CVT, which can leak fluid and cut drive power. Run your VIN before you pay for a repair.
- Should I sell the CVT and other parts separately?
- You don't have to. You sell the whole car as it sits, and we pick it up free anywhere in the US. Leaving the parts on also keeps the offer simple.
