Selling a dead or junk car in Asheboro
Asheboro makes it a crime to take back your own impounded car without paying. Section 90.16 bars anyone "to remove or attempt to remove from any storage facility designated by the city any vehicle which has been impounded" before the towing and impoundment fees are paid, or a bond is posted instead. The penalty is "a Class 3 misdemeanor as provided in G.S. ยง 14-4, with a maximum fine of no more than $500." The cheaper move is to keep the car from being towed at all. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you can sell the whole car as it sits.

One junker, out of sight
Asheboro's limit sits in Section 90.06: "It shall be unlawful to have more than one junked motor vehicle, as defined herein, on the premises of public or private property." The one you keep belongs in the rear yard, as zoning defines it, and must be "entirely concealed from public view from a public street and from abutting premises by an acceptable covering or screening." Anything beyond that goes in a fully enclosed garage or building. A second or third car is often simpler to sell.
The city cannot order a junker off private land just because it is ugly. The authorizing official must first find "in writing that the aesthetic benefits of removing the vehicle outweigh the burdens imposed on the private property owner." On private property, cases go to the Planning and Community Development Department. The Police Department handles streets and city land.
Seven days, by mail or on the glass
Section 90.07 mails the warning, first class, when the owner's address can be traced. When it cannot, or the car is abandoned, the warning is fixed to the windshield. The removal date it sets is "no sooner than seven days after the notice is affixed or mailed." An appeal of the city's finding is also allowed. Section 90.08 lets the city skip notice for cars abandoned on streets, and on private property when the official sees "a special need for prompt action," as with a car "blocking or obstructing ingress or egress to businesses and residences."
Section 90.13 also keeps the city out when state procedures would let the landowner remove the car. It wants a written request, except for nuisance vehicles and junkers already under a removal order.
If it has already been towed
Asheboro's Section 90.11 lets an owner reclaim the car any time, "including before the probable cause hearing," by paying towing and storage or posting a bond of twice that with the tow operator holding it. After that, the car cannot go back to breaking the same rules. Towed or impounded covers the decision.
Title and plates
Titles come from NCDMV through a plate agency or by mail. Randolph County does not issue them. On the reverse, you date the sale, give the mileage if it is required, fill out the damage statement and sign while a notary watches. If NCDMV would not register the car on its current title, its only legal buyers are those taking it for parts, scrap metal or recycling. Randolph is one of the 19 emissions counties. Keep the plates, and turn them in before ending coverage unless your next car will wear them.
Getting an offer
Use the form or dial (877) 421-6008. Let us know the car, its mileage, if it starts, and if you are the titled owner. We can load it from behind a house, out of a garage, or off a farm lane at the edge of town. Thomasville is 19.9 miles off and High Point 22.5. Statewide rules are on North Carolina.
Questions people ask
- Can I keep two junk cars on my property in Asheboro?
- Only one may be outdoors, in the rear yard, and covering or screening must keep it fully out of view from the street and next-door lots. Section 90.06 sends any second one into a closed garage or building.
- How long does Asheboro give me before towing?
- Seven days at least. Section 90.07 sets the removal date no earlier than a week after the notice is mailed or posted, though Section 90.08 lets the city act sooner when prompt action is needed for safety or traffic.
- Can I get my car back once Asheboro has towed it?
- Yes, at any point in the process. Section 90.11 has you pay the towing and storage charges, or put up a bond for double that, with the company that has the car.
