Selling a dead or junk car in Mebane
Mebane caps it at one: "It shall be unlawful to have more than one junked motor vehicle on the premises of public or private property." That single car still has terms. Section 14-75 allows it in the rear yard, whole, only when "entirely concealed from public view from a public street and from abutting premises." A second wreck belongs inside a garage or a fully closed building. Got one too many in Mebane? We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and free pickup anywhere in the US covers Alamance and Orange alike.

Mebane's junked-car test
Section 14-72 borrows the state's wording. A car that "does not display a current license plate lawfully upon that vehicle" and fails one more listed test is junked. Mebane's building inspector may then order it gone after "finding in writing that the aesthetic benefits of removing the vehicle outweigh the burdens imposed on the private property owner."
Letters and windshield tags
Section 14-76 sends a junked-car notice "by first class mail" whenever Mebane can learn the owner's name and address. Where it cannot, the warning is fixed to the windshield. Both routes set a tow date "no sooner than seven days after the notice is affixed or mailed." Moving the car in that window keeps it off the truck, and an appeal is the other path.
Section 14-82 holds the city back on private land. It tows there only on "a written request of the owner, occupant or lessee," apart from nuisance cars or ones the building inspector already ordered out.
No dead cars on Mebane streets
Section 34-182 bans parking or storing "inoperable motor vehicles, unlicensed motor vehicles" on public streets. "Short term standing not to exceed two hours" for loading is not treated as parking. Signed blocks add a 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. ban under Section 34-165.
Once towed, Section 14-80 lets an owner reclaim the car "at any stage in the proceedings," paying towing and storage, or posting "a bond for double the amount." Section 14-85 makes leaving the lot unpaid unlawful.
Alamance side, Orange side
Mebane covers parts of two counties, and the inspection rules differ across that line. Alamance appears on the state's emissions-county list. Orange does not. Annual safety inspection still covers every Mebane car.
Paperwork for a Mebane seller
Titles come from NCDMV, not from either county. You reach it through plate agencies or by mail. Three we checked, straight-line from central Mebane: 4215 University Drive, Suite 8, Durham, about 20 miles southeast; 5533 W. Market St., Greensboro, about 34 miles west; 4121 New Bern Ave., Raleigh, about 44 miles southeast. Others may be nearer.
Mebane sellers need a notary present to sign the back of the title. A scrap-bound car's title may be stamped JUNKED; that assignment gets notarized, and NCDMV issues nothing new. No title in hand? Read junk car with no title.
Unscrew the plates once the car is sold. Unless they go onto another car of yours, return them to NCDMV, and keep the policy active until they are in.

Getting an offer
Mebane owners can call (877) 421-6008 or send the form for an offer. You sell the whole car as it sits. The truck can load it from the rear yard, a garage, or the curb where it quit.
Questions people ask
- How many junked cars can a Mebane property hold?
- Just one. Section 14-75 says it has to be in the backyard, fully hidden from the street and neighbors by a cover or enclosure. Every other junked car must sit inside a garage or a building that encloses it fully.
- Is it legal to park a dead car on a Mebane street?
- No. Section 34-182 keeps inoperable and unlicensed vehicles off public streets. A stop of two hours or less to load or unload is not counted as parking.
- How does an owner get a towed car back from Mebane?
- Section 14-80 allows it at any stage, even ahead of the probable cause hearing: pay the towing and storage charges, or post a bond worth twice that with the tow company.
- Does Mebane's Orange County side need emissions testing?
- Orange County is not on North Carolina's emissions list, while Alamance is. Safety inspection applies on both sides of town.
