Selling a dead or junk car in Mason
Mason has a plain test for whether a car works: can it be started and moved 100 feet under its own power? If not, Section 303.09 calls it not operable. That matters more than it sounds, because a junk motor vehicle in Mason needs only two of three traits: an age of three years or more, extensive damage, or failing that 100-foot test. A car three or more years old that will not start already has two.

72 hours, then 72 more
Section 303.09 gives a junk or abandoned car 72 hours out in the yard, and only if the landowner allows it. To stay longer it must be "housed in a garage or other suitable structure or with a cover not torn or deteriorated."
Once the city serves written notice, you get another 72 hours to remove the car or cover it properly. The notice can be handed to the person in charge, left at their home or sent by certified mail. One notice covers the same violation for 365 days, so a car that comes back later in the year does not get a fresh warning.
- Every further 72 hours the car stays is a separate offense.
- The penalty starts as a minor misdemeanor. With one earlier conviction inside a year it rises to fourth degree, and with two or more it is third degree.
Mason's code also counts a car as abandoned if it is left on someone else's private property for any length of time without permission, or on property open to public travel or parking for more than 72 hours.
The 2025 maintenance code adds a yearly limit
The city's Exterior Property Maintenance Code, dated 2025, sets a second rule: no junk motor vehicle on a lot for more than seven days in a calendar year, unless zoning expressly permits it or it is inside a completely enclosed structure. Disassembled or unlicensed vehicles get no seven-day allowance. With the same two exceptions, they may not stay on a lot at all.
Enforcement under that code is complaint-based. When the city confirms a violation, it generally leaves a door hanger naming it and giving a deadline. Questions go to the City of Mason at 513.229.8500.
Streets, snow and impound
An unlicensed car may not be parked or left standing on any public right-of-way under Section 351.14. If the city removes one from a public street, the registered owner pays for the tow and storage.
U.S. Route 42 is Mason's only snow emergency route. A snow emergency is in effect for 24 hours after a snowfall of two inches or more, and police may tow a car parked on the route.
To get an impounded car released under Section 303.08, show the Police Department identification and ownership papers, then pay the fines or post bond. Waiting more than 120 hours after the impoundment adds a fee. To reach an officer or report a violation, call Warren County Communications at 513.695.2525; police administrative offices answer at 513.229.8560, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.
Warren County title offices
Ohio's titles are a county court clerk's job, and a Mason seller isn't limited to Warren County. Straight-line distances from the center of Mason, as the crow flies:
| Office | Phone | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| 773 Reading Rd., Mason | (513) 695-3511 | about 1.8 miles southwest |
| 4780 Socialville Foster Rd., Suite T, Mason | (513) 695-3503 | about 2.7 miles south |
| 3203 Heritage Green Dr., Monroe (Butler County) | (513) 785-6766 | about 7.2 miles northwest |
| 19 Dave Ave., Suite A, Lebanon | (513) 695-1175 | about 7.4 miles northeast |
The seller's signature on the assignment needs a notary's seal. Keep the plates: the registration stops when the car is sold, and Ohio has the seller remove them on the spot.

Questions people ask
- Does a car cover count in Mason?
- It can. Section 303.09 accepts a garage or other suitable structure, or a full cover in good condition over the whole car. A ripped, worn-out or partial cover does not meet the rule.
- Is Mason's limit 72 hours or seven days?
- Both rules are on the books. Section 303.09 limits a junk car to 72 hours outside a garage or proper cover, with 72 more hours after a written notice. The city's 2025 Exterior Property Maintenance Code separately says a junk motor vehicle may not stay on a lot more than seven days in a calendar year unless zoning allows it or it is inside a completely enclosed structure.
- Can I leave an unregistered car on the street in front of my house in Mason?
- No. Section 351.14 bars intentionally parking or leaving an unlicensed vehicle standing on any public right-of-way in the city. The city can remove one from a public street, and the registered owner pays the towing and storage.
