Selling a dead or junk car in Easton
Easton counts private driveways and lots, not only streets. Under Section 560-56 of the city code, a car that is "physically inoperable and is left unattended on public or private property for more than 48 hours" is abandoned. So is one parked there without a valid plate, a valid inspection certificate and a readable VIN. If your car fits that description, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits.

Clearing a dead car off your own land
If the abandoned car is someone else's, Easton gives the property owner a way to remove it. You "may remove or have removed the vehicle at the reasonable expense of the owner of the vehicle," and you then hold a lien for that cost. There is one step first: obtaining PennDOT's "Police Request for Removal of Abandoned Vehicle." The city's fee schedule lists that form at $25. More on this in car abandoned on your property.
Two cars can make a junkyard
Under Section 595-04, a junkyard can be any lot used for storing "two or more unregistered, inoperable motor vehicles." Two dead cars in one backyard can put a homeowner on the wrong side of that definition. Vacant homes have a separate rule. Properties on the city's vacant-property registry must be kept free of junk and "inoperable vehicles," among other things.
Boots, tickets and the 30-day tow
Easton boots cars with unpaid parking fines. Chapter 560 sets these deadlines:
- After 10 calendar days, an extra $15 is charged each day the boot stays on.
- A booted car at a metered space "shall be removed after 10 business days."
- No car stays booted for more than 30 calendar days. After that it is "automatically towed at the owner's expense," on top of the fines.
A car that isn't worth what it owes in tickets is a common reason people sell. See tickets or registration hold.
Title and plates
Pennsylvania doesn't route titles through its counties, so Northampton has no title office. In Easton, the signing happens at a notary, tag shop or dealer approved by PennDOT. Seller signature, hand-printed name and mileage all go on the title while the agent looks on, and any co-owner signs too. Selling to a vehicle salvage dealer or scrap metal processor takes the notary out of it. For a missing title, PennDOT's duplicate form is MV-38O, and it costs $72.00.
You take the plate. Return it to PennDOT, or for $11.00 move it onto a different car. Northampton County falls in the South Central emissions region; PennDOT's publication marks it pending certification. The yearly safety inspection still applies. The Pennsylvania page covers the state rules.

Questions people ask
- When does Easton consider a car abandoned?
- Under Section 560-56, a car is abandoned if it "is physically inoperable and is left unattended on public or private property for more than 48 hours." It also qualifies if it lacks a valid plate, a valid inspection certificate and an identifiable VIN.
- A dead car was left on my lot in Easton. Can I have it towed?
- Yes, at the car owner's expense, and you hold a lien for the reasonable cost. First you need PennDOT's "Police Request for Removal of Abandoned Vehicle" form. The city charges $25 for it.
- My car was booted for unpaid tickets. How long do I have?
- After 10 calendar days an extra $15 a day is added. A car booted at a metered space is removed after 10 business days, and no car stays booted past 30 calendar days. At that point it is towed at the owner's expense.
