Selling a junk car in Woonsocket
Woonsocket has a Rhode Island DMV office inside its own limits. On a map, the Diamond Hill Road branch is just about 2 miles northeast of downtown Woonsocket, a short trip for title and plate errands. Selling the car can be shorter still: we buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you sell the whole car as it sits.

The Diamond Hill Road office
Write down 2000 Diamond Hill Road, Woonsocket, RI 02895, and (401) 356-4031. It is among the DMV offices we checked for Providence County, which may have others. One errand it won't cover is a lost title: the DMV takes duplicate requests at its Cranston location and warns they can run up to 90 days. More in selling with no title.
Older cars and the title question
Many junkers around town predate model year 2001, and Rhode Island handles those apart from newer ones. Statute says they receive no title until a sale happens or a lender records a security interest. An owner may request one anyway for $50. From 2001 on, the seller's signature goes on the reverse, the buyer adds theirs, and the odometer reading is written in. Old project car has more on aging vehicles.
Junk-car rules from state statute
No Woonsocket ordinance turned up online. Everything in this section is Rhode Island law, and local rules we did not find could add to it.
Statewide, abandonment comes in several forms. A car that cannot run, is over eight years old, and stays on public ground more than 48 hours qualifies. The same Woonsocket rule covers a car left illegally on public land over three days, or parked on private land without the landowner's permission. After towing, officers have 15 days to send registered letters to the last registered owner and lienholders. The Woonsocket owner then has three weeks to pay towing and storage and get the car back. Otherwise the car goes up for public auction in Woonsocket, and the winning bidder gets title clear of any liens.
Two limits worth knowing. A receipt from a police auction works as a title only when the car goes to a demolisher. A Woonsocket lot packed with dead cars draws in one more official. When a junkyard has no license, the state's environmental management director may order its junked vehicles crushed and cleared off within 3 months.
Plates
Hang onto the plates. Cancel the registration online; when the confirmation email lands, the DMV says the plates may be destroyed or recycled. Prefer paper? Woonsocket sellers can drop the "Affidavit for Cancellation of Registration" in a branch drop box along with ID or a registration copy.

Questions people ask
- Does Woonsocket have a DMV branch?
- Yes. Woonsocket has its own DMV branch at 2000 Diamond Hill Road, Woonsocket, RI 02895, (401) 356-4031, around 2 miles northeast of downtown. Lost-title replacements, though, go through the DMV's Cranston location.
- My junk car predates 2001. Is there a title?
- Usually not. A Woonsocket car older than model year 2001 gets no Rhode Island title until it is sold or a lender files a security interest. An owner may still request one for $50.
- What does Woonsocket's own code say about junk cars?
- We could not find Woonsocket's ordinances online. This page uses Rhode Island statute, and city rules we missed could still apply. Statewide, a car of no value is one that cannot run, is past ten years, lacks registration and a valid sticker, and is worth $500 or less.
