Selling a junk car in Moncks Corner
A car that dies on a Moncks Corner street has a short night ahead of it. Section 34-195 of the town code bars parking on any street "for a period of time longer than one hour between the hours of midnight and 7:00 a.m.", and the only people excused are "physicians on emergency calls." A car that will not start is still sitting there at 1 a.m. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, so you can sell the whole car as it sits.

Parking rules in Chapter 34
Three sections matter once a car stops running:
- One hour, overnight. The midnight-to-7 limit in Section 34-195 covers every street in town.
- Keep off the tracks. Section 34-189 bans stopping or parking "within 50 feet of the nearest rail of a railroad crossing", or within four feet of the rails where a line or spur runs along a street. The line in the photo above runs right past the old depot.
- No double parking, no blocking a dig. That section also bans parking on the street side of a car already at the curb, or next to a street excavation where it would get in the way of traffic.
When a car breaks those rules with nobody in it, Section 34-186 lets "any police officer or duly authorized person" remove and impound it. The owner gets it back "only upon payment of the cost of impounding."
A dead car on your own land
Our search of the Moncks Corner code turned up no section on wrecks parked at home. So the state statute is the guide here, though Town Hall could have rules we missed.
Under Title 56, two days unattended beside a highway (48 hours) is enough for the abandoned label. Anywhere else, a yard included, the line is a week, seven days, when whoever runs the land never agreed to it. Derelict status attaches to things like an unregistered car past eight years of age, or one with the motor pulled. Either sort may be hauled off public or private ground, and town code officers can mark one first. That marker is a colored tag, a heads-up before removal.
Once hauled, the wrecker and the yard holding it owe a letter, sent certified or registered with a return receipt, to whoever was last registered and to each lender with a lien. Left unclaimed, it can be auctioned off, and the winning bidder walks away with a magistrate's order and clean title. Read any such envelope right away.
Title, Form 416 and the plate
Titles here come from the SCDMV itself. At sale time, the top assignment block on yours wants who is buying and where they live, a lender if there is one, current miles, what was paid, the day, and two signatures. No line for price? Then pair it with a bill of sale.
Next, report it. Form 416 (Notice of Vehicle Sold) is mandatory, mailed or dropped at a branch. You keep the tag. Put it on another car registered to you, or return it with Form 452, and then cancel the liability coverage.
Lost the title? Replacing it runs $15. There is also a no-title door for older wrecks: once a car hits twelve model years, lacks a valid plate, and either has no engine at all or will not work in any way, a demolisher or scrap metal recycler may take it on your signed affirmation. Junk car with no title explains both routes.

Questions people ask
- Can my broken-down car stay on a Moncks Corner street overnight?
- Not for long. Section 34-195 limits parking on any street to one hour between midnight and 7 a.m., and only physicians on emergency calls are excused. An unattended car that breaks the chapter's rules can be impounded under Section 34-186.
- Does Moncks Corner have its own junk-car ordinance?
- We did not find one aimed at junk cars on private land, so this page uses South Carolina law. The town might have rules of its own as well. Under state law, a car sitting on private property for over seven days without the owner's consent is treated as abandoned.
- What do I file with the SCDMV after the car is gone?
- The Notice of Vehicle Sold, Form 416, by mail or at a branch. In Moncks Corner, a plate with no other car of yours to go on goes back with Form 452. Then drop the liability insurance.
