Selling a broken or junk Subaru Outback

The Outback leads every Subaru in complaints on file with NHTSA. Outback owners logged 9,758 for the 1995 through 2026 model years, per a count on October 10, 2026. That tops a third of the 26,768 across all 18 Subaru models on this site.

Almost half of the Outback's total, 4,818, sits on the 2015-2020 cars. On every one of those years, the electrical system is one of the two components owners name most. When fixing yours would run past what it's worth, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Seven generations at a glance

Wikipedia gives production years, and it lists every engine sold worldwide, so not all of them reached the US. The complaint counts below use the model years that line up with each generation, so treat the edges as close, not exact.

1995-2004: springs, subframes and the parking rod

For the 1997 and 1998, engine and engine cooling tops the list (24 of 79 complaints, then 39 of 127). Power train takes over on the 1999 and 2000. On the 2001 and 2002, service brakes and the gasoline fuel system sit side by side at the top.

Three recalls from this stretch deal with metal. Recall 01V216000 put a spring guard on both front struts of 1995-1999 cars sold or registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois and a list of other states. Recall 03V153000 had dealers clean and rust-proof the rear suspension subframe on 2000-2003 cars in a similar list of states. Recall 02V282000 replaced an automatic transmission parking rod that was made wrong on 2001-2003 cars. Each campaign's vehicle count (180,000, 170,000 and 172,564) covers other Subarus too, not only the Outback.

2005-2009: air bags and brake lines

The 2006 has 277 complaints, and 69 name vehicle speed control. On the 2008, air bags lead by a wide margin: 104 of 226. Passenger air bag inflator recalls reach across these years, including 15V323000, 16V358000 and 20V001000. Dealers replace the inflator free of charge.

Brake lines get two recalls. Recall 13V110000 covers 2005-2009 Outbacks and Legacys built from December 2003 through April 2009 and registered in a list of states. Dealers inspect for brake fluid seepage and rust-proof the area. Recall 14V311000 adds a pressure test and leak check, and its 461,338 vehicles also include Imprezas, WRXs and Foresters.

2010-2014: the first CVT Outbacks

Wikipedia lists the Lineartronic CVT for the fourth generation. Power train complaints jump at the same time. The 2010 has 76 of 360, and the 2011 has 182 of 652. That 182 is the largest single-component count on any Outback before 2015. The 2011 also has 95 complaints about exterior lighting. Recall 12V602000 added a fused harness to 2010-2011 Outbacks and Legacys, and its 633,842 vehicles include Tribecas and Foresters as well.

Recall 16V694000 replaces the windshield wiper motor's bottom cover on 2010-2014 Outbacks and Legacys; its 592,647 vehicles count both models. On the 2013, the year the FB25B engine arrived, engine is the top component at 57 of 297.

2015-2019: electrical and wiper complaints peak

These five years hold 3,919 complaints. The 2017 has 379 that name the electrical system, out of 918. The 2019, the busiest Outback year at 1,035, has 351 electrical and 309 visibility and wiper complaints.

2016-2017 Outbacks and Legacys made between February 29 and May 6, 2016 got recall 16V292000, a do-not-drive notice. Dealers check the steering column's lot number and replace the column if needed. Recall 18V773000 corrects 2018 Outback software that can keep the low fuel light from turning on in time. Outback owners also have fuel pump recalls 20V218000 and 21V587000, which reach the 2019 and 2018-2020 cars for a weak low pressure pump.

2020-2026: wipers lead, newer years are thin

The 2020 has 899 complaints, and 299 name visibility and wipers. The 2022 has 251 of 465 in that category. The 2023-2026 cars have fewer than 105 complaints each, but they have had much less time on the road. Recall 21V955000 covers a transmission control unit programming error on 2020 Outbacks.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Repair it or sell it?

Start with the quote. Then look up the price of a running Outback of that year and mileage. When fixing your Outback would cost about what it's worth running, letting it go as is is usually the smarter call.

  1. Start with the VIN. Put it into NHTSA's recall lookup. Recall remedies above are done by Subaru dealers at no charge, and an open one may cover part of the problem. Our open recall guide explains what to do if one is still open.
  2. CVT car that shudders or won't pull? That means 2010 and later. Get the fault diagnosed in writing. The failing CVT guide walks through the decision.
  3. Electrical faults that keep coming back? See electrical problems before you spend on parts one at a time.
  4. Rust on an older car? Subframes and brake lines on older Outbacks drew rust-proofing recalls. If the car failed a state inspection, read failed inspection or rust.

For the money side, see repairs cost more than it is worth and what a junk car is worth.

Selling a whole Outback

  1. Have these handy: the VIN, the miles, what the problem is, and if the wheels turn.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it is. Driveway, back lot or shop, any of them is fine. Mention a flat tire, a missing wheel or a locked steering column so the truck arrives ready to load it.
  4. Keep the Outback in one piece. Don't pull the converter or wheels, and say if something is already removed.
  5. At Outback pickup, show our driver your ID, then hand over the signed title and any keys you still have. Each state treats plates its own way, so check what to do after the sale once the Outback is gone. Lost the title? Start with selling with no title.

Questions people ask

Which Outback model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
By October 10, 2026 the 2019 Outback topped the list at 1,035 complaints. Behind it come the 2017 (918), the 2020 (899) and the 2018 (813). The 2023-2026 cars are still new, so their low counts tell only some of the story.
What is the 2020 Outback transmission recall?
Recall 21V955000 covers 2020 Outbacks and Legacys and 2019-2020 Ascents. On these Outbacks, faulty transmission control unit software can engage the clutch before the drive chain is ready. Dealers reprogram the unit, check its data for chain slip and look at the chain guide. The 198,255 vehicles in the campaign include all three models.
Will you buy an Outback that won't start or move?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us whether it rolls, whether it has all four wheels, and where it is parked.
Should I pull parts off my Outback before I sell it?
No. You sell the whole car as it sits. Leave the Outback's wheels, converter and battery on. Say early if a part is missing, because that changes the offer.
