So if your SVX sits in a garage with a slipping or dead automatic, that is the most common story this car has. You can sell it without fixing it. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you can sell the whole car as it sits.

One car, one engine, one transmission

The SVX is a grand tourer designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign and built at Subaru's Ōta North Plant in Gunma, Japan. Every one has the 3.3-liter EG33 flat-six, four-wheel drive and a 4-speed 4EAT automatic, Wikipedia says. Production ran from 1991 to December 1996, and sales continued into 1997, when 640 were sold.

There was no manual, so every SVX on the road carries the same automatic. That is why the complaint file reads the way it does.

What owners reported, by model year group

1992: the early transmissions

The 1992 has 231 complaints, and 191 name the power train. Suspension (13) and vehicle speed control (5) trail far behind. Four complaints describe a crash and one a fire.

Wikipedia describes what went wrong with early SVX transmissions. A torque converter clutch could disintegrate and clog early radiators; both the clutch and the radiator were changed in 1993. There were also widespread high clutch failures, which Wikipedia blames on pump pressure below spec, fluid evacuation and clutch balance pressure.

1993-1994: the revisions arrive

These two years hold 32 complaints, and 26 name the power train. Wikipedia says several major revisions were made, all of them included by late 1994 production. A 1994 built early in the year may not have all of them.

1995-1997: the last cars

The last three years have 25 complaints between them. Power train still leads on the 1995 (16 of 20). The 1997's two complaints both concern air bags. Shortly after the SVX ended production, Wikipedia says, Subaru moved to a completely redesigned 4-speed unit.

Rebuild it, or let it go?

An SVX is old enough that the question is rarely just the transmission. Ask three things:

  1. Is the transmission the only problem? A car that has sat for years usually needs brakes, fuel system work and tires too. See sitting for years.
  2. Do you have a written quote? Get one before you decide. The bad transmission guide explains the symptoms and how to weigh the repair.
  3. Will you finish it? Many SVXs end up as half-done projects. Old project car covers selling one in pieces of progress.

If the rebuild is more than you want to put in, letting the car go whole is the easy exit.

Selling an SVX whole

  1. Have the VIN, mileage and title ready, and note what you know about the transmission's history.
  2. Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us how it's parked. An SVX that won't go into gear, or sits on flat tires in a garage, can still be loaded. We offer free pickup anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep it complete. Leave the wheels, the glass and the flat-six in place. Tell us about anything already sold off.

No title? Start with selling with no title. Other Subarus from the same years: the Legacy, the XT and the GL, or all Subaru models.

Questions people ask

Which SVX model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1992, by a wide margin: 231 of the 288 owner complaints in our October 10, 2026 SVX count, and 191 of them involve the power train. The next-highest year, 1994, has 28.
Were there any recalls on the SVX?
NHTSA's data lists no recall campaigns for any SVX model year, 1992 through 1997. It never hurts to run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls anyway.
Did Subaru fix the early SVX transmission?
Wikipedia says the torque converter clutch and radiator were both changed in 1993, and that several major revisions to the transmission were all included by late 1994 production.
Will you buy an SVX that has sat for years and won't move?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Let us know roughly when it last ran, if the wheels still turn, and what town it's in.
